yeah i'm sorry I really dont care about harming cockroaches
What a thought provocative post, I am utterly glad you decided to share this opinion with the rest of us.
I can't wait to see what discussion this quote will bring to life, as I'm sure it's nothing but the intellectual milestone that facepunch has waited for.
As far as I'm concerned, cockroaches, mosquitoes, and rats can all buzz off from the cycle of existence, because they're only capable of causing misery thanks to the diseases they spread.
Hey hey keep the rats and mosquitoes we actually need those.
Cockroaches though, I don't know what the fuck kind of chain they fit in to.

ur welcome
Rats are adorable as fuck dude, I can't not love them.
Rats are the best pets, my cousin had a pet rat and you can feed them human drugs (if you think it's cruelty, it's how a lot of clinical trials start out). We'd feed him small amounts of drugs and laugh our asses off at thems. If you give the guy too much drugs and he OD's well don't fret because feeder mice are cheap as fuck and you can pretend your little bro never even died.

thats kinda fucked up dude
It is a roach. It basically is a machine/robot.
They just do their pre-programmed tasks till they die.

Just because they are cheap doesn't mean it's okay to toy around with them like that.
thats kinda fucked up dude
Not just kinda fucked up, waste of drugs aswell :(

don't we all
I think the creepiest thing about this for people is the idea of controlling another living thing's nervous system.
Sure it's a cockroach but it's still a bit unnerving for me.

what is art

What really bothered me was what you had to do to the little guy before you can do this, and even then all you could actually do was just make him turn left and turn right.
For the "electronic backpack" to work the cockroaches have to be placed in icy water to subdue them before sandpaper is used to remove the waxy coating on the shell of the insect's head.
An electrode connector and electrodes are then glued on to the insect's body and a needle is used to poke a hole in their thorax in order to insert a wire.
Their antennae are then cut and electrodes are inserted.
Seems unnecessarily cruel to irreparably damage a creature like that only to tap a touchscreen and giggle as it follows one of two possible commands. There are already existing creatures that pull this sort of mind control, and we find them pretty repulsive despite being a natural organism.
don't we all
Well not to the extent insects do. They basically are organic robots. That is backwards thinking though.
While doing it for entertainment is rather fucked I still find this really interesting
It's not being used for experiments, it's being marketed as a toy / educational tool for kids.
I'm sorry but I don't like the idea of kids getting used to animal torture and using animals as toys (even if this particular insect doesn't feels anything), drilling holes in them and using sandpaper on their heads.
Who said this is marketed towards kids? Do you also think GTA should be banned? To me this seems more like a project for adults than children.
thats kinda fucked up dude
I'm just doing what they do in labratorys before they test drugs out on humans. It's entertaining that's what it is, especially when you give him adderall that fucker runs for hours.
If Australians did this to their spider population they could take over the world with them.
ty for the idea we'll get right onto it.
we'll start with new zealand
It's like people think cockroaches are miniature humans.
Also what the hell does a philosophy professor know about the anatomy and physiology of a cockroach? Probably no more than the average person.
This post demonstrates a complete ignorance of the function of ecosystems.
Well to be fair out of that list mosquitoes really can be made extinct with zero effect on anything else. Its why scientists are working on genetically modifying them so that they kill of their entire species by making them unable to reproduce.

Yeah Facepunch is very bizzare when it comes to "insect rights", remember that mite being injected with peroxide thread? A bunch a people starting complaining how cruel it was, when mites are nasty little things and lets not forget that they are basically walking programs, they have no freewill and just do what instinct tells them to do, like what code tells a program to do. They don't even feel pain, like how ants walk through a fire and they don't even flinch. Doing this to a Cockroach isn't "hurting it" because there is nothing to hurt, it can't feel pain and has the sentient ability of a complex computer program.

yeah i think the clinical trials don't laugh like idiots when they drug the rats though, they kind of do it because it's their job. laughing at aberrant shit happening to animals is literally the definition of animal cruelty you doofus, rofl.

yeah except when they do it labs they do it with the intent of producing drugs that are safe for human consumption. in your case it's just giving drugs to animals for the sheer enjoyment of watching them overdose. pretty fucking creepy.
[editline]9th November 2013[/editline]
nvm cheeseman was quicker on the draw
No it's not my intention to fucking overdose the mice what do you take me as some kind of serial killer. I just like to share my shit.
Disregarding the moral argument, it's pretty fucking COOL

very clearly never seen a city rat
When I was younger I used to rip apart insects all the time just to see whats inside/what happens so I am basically a psychopath, but this still seems unsettling.
Just fucking no.
I wonder how they would they feel to have a wire shoved up their ass and be controlled by someone with an iPhone.
I hate cockroaches as much as the next guy, but this seems....pretty cruel and unusual if you ask me.
I will squish and kill all the cockroaches I see in spite of you.

they are food for other animals, especially their larva. Everything has a niche in nature.
