Hitler also didn't use these chemical weapons because of the gas masks which are called the most successful part of WW2. Hitler knew England was prepared for a chemical attack so he just never used them.
Yeah right, every citizen in England has had gas mask lying beside his bed.

They were painted with a special kind of detecting paint that changed color in case of an attack.

German scientists during the 30's still developed loads of other nasty substances far more sinister than mustard/chlorine agents, however: Germany created the first nerve agent and its variations (Tabun, and Sarin, respectively) during the war, but refrained from using them not because the allies would have protection against it (they wouldn't) but because he was fearful of the allies developing their own variations once the weapon was used on a battlefield. Tabun and Sarin don't need to be inhaled to cause mortality. The allies were prepared for attacks by most known chemical weapons, but Tabun being dropped on London is a scenario that would have gone down in history as one of the most horrifically destructive chemical attacks ever.
despite not living anywhere near any modern battlefield, shit like this and UXO terrify me
Phosgene is definitely not a fun experience, in my field you can't afford to fuck up or you'll actually MAKE phosgene. Gotta make sure those refrigerant lines are free of any CFCs/HCFCs before you put a torch to them.
it would suck if it was this summer it leaked out, i was going to river swim
Nazis still screwing with the world even today.
Say what you will about the Nazis but they weren't the ones that decided to go dump the shit in the ocean and forget about it.
Of course it was too much trouble to dump them into Atlantic. Lots of space far from shipping lanes, fishing spots and plenty of depth. But nooo, dump them wherever, who cares...
But nooo, dump them wherever, who cares...
They were dumped by Nazis.
They were dumped by Nazis.
They were dumped by the Allies.
Say what you will about the Nazis but they weren't the ones that decided to go dump the shit in the ocean and forget about it.
Not that time. Tear down forests and build war factories? Sure.
We should have like shot them in to space or something
I know a better idea. Listen up Facepunch! Let's all come together and dig straight to the center of this forsaken rock and dumb it in there? Yeah that sounds brilliant right! I know man :v: Then close it up for eternity! Let those underworld guys have some of that radiation!
Burying toxic crap happens plenty on land, too. Out of sight, out of mind and all that -- at least until things start to leak and cancer rates explode. A couple schools were built on top of a military waste dump, and it didn't come to light until after a bunch of kids ended up with cancer. I remember hearing about it years ago, because one of my relatives was contacted during the investigation. She worked on base back in the WWII days.
Say what you will about the Nazis but they weren't the ones that decided to go dump the shit in the ocean and forget about it.
Very true; but the Nazis still ended up screwing with the present world because of the actions of the ones who dumped it. The ramifications of those decisions leave us where we are now; with all of them to blame
They were dumped by Nazis.
You were dumbed by me.
We should have like shot them in to space or something
This was before we had anything capable of going to space or even bunkers to seal them in like we have for nuclear waste now. The only good solution would be to process all this shit into harmless stuff but that takes a lot of money and the powers that dealt with these chemicals had their economies ruined from the war.
Yeah right, every citizen in England has had gas mask lying beside his bed.
Well Facepunch is located in the UK so there has to be at least some
Say what you will about the Nazis but they weren't the ones that decided to go dump the shit in the ocean and forget about it.
It seems incredibly stupid for them to just dump it in the ocean, i mean at least bury the chemicals?
It seems incredibly stupid for them to just dump it in the ocean, i mean at least bury the chemicals?
Thats just as bad. If I remember correctly there are issues with the US army burying all their left over WWI gas munitions and then a town being built unknowingly above the dump site.
We should have like shot them in to space or something
Our space colonies will deal with it when the time comes.
They were dumped by the Allies.
Whatever. Same thing. I don't care. I fucked that up.
Whatever. Same thing. I don't care. I fucked that up.
did you just say the allied forces and the nazis were the same thing i can't have fucking read that right
did you just say the allied forces and the nazis were the same thing i can't have fucking read that right
Yes. I wasn't serious. Did you take that seriously? Also, my dumb post was right after waking up, and it was dumb as hell, yeah.
Very true; but the Nazis still ended up screwing with the present world because of the actions of the ones who dumped it. The ramifications of those decisions leave us where we are now; with all of them to blame
I think you've got that backwards. The Nazis had nothing to do with the action of discarding the chemical weapons in the Baltic, so the only people we can blame for that specific action (and more importantly, its repercussions) are those who did the dumping, namely the Allies and Soviet Russia. The only thing we can blame the Nazis for in this case is the existence of the weapons, in which case we would be sharing the blame equally - all sides of that war carried stockpiles of chemical weapons. Do the Nazis still tangibly affect our world? I don't think anybody's denying that little tidbit. Do we blame them for that effect? I don't think blame is the right word, I think that's just called history.
Nazi Zombie! Also, damn.... is there any cleanup plan?
To those discussing use of chemical weapons in ww2 both sides agreeing not to use chemical weapons didn't mean they didn't mean they didn't have them. It was kind of a mad scenario, both sides having them but not wanting to deploy them. http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chemical_mortar_battalion
You can't blame the Nazi's for this, as it was the Allies doing.
