Britain and France introduce no-fly zone resolution, vote expected in next few days

I feel as though I'm witnessing child abuse and doing nothing about it. France and Britain could quell this violence in a split second.
It proves just how dumb the Facepunch userbase can be.
I don't agree with an Invasion fully.
Setting up a DMZ between the two sides would be acceptable I guess.

A no-fly zone will just stop bombings, it won't stop loyalist forces from slaughtering the rebels. Worst still, we really can't do anything else. It's sad, but that's how it is.
Are you fucking kidding me
"a full invasion" is winning?
If the United States had taken that approach with Afghanistan, it would've been better for everybody. Not saying it would play out the same way in Libya.
Yeah great, Cameron's gobbing off about setting up a no fly zone when Britain has no planes to speak of and I like how OP refereed to a no fly zone as simple. It's easy to systematically destroy every airfield in a nation.

France might be able to but Britain can't do much, realistically we have next to no Airforce or Navy and our army isn't particularly big either. The MOD had to recommission the 8 ships they decommissioned when they started work on building the Type 45's because it left us with next to no ships.

There are no 'two sides'
If there is a no fly zone is in effect the rebels will have no reason to shoot planes, The NATO Airforces are more than capable of shooting the fuck out of anything that is 10 meters of the ground.
Beneath 5000meters, Lybians got enough anti-air to fuck up a fucking fleet, surprising isn't it?

Urm, do you believe every word they say in The Sun?

We have a Military Airfield on Gibraltar - We have plenty of Jets.
What we won't have very soon is active Aircraft Carriers. Fuck you Cameron :argh:

The rebel's don't want to split Libya, if there is a DMZ between the rebel held area(s) and the government areas then you would basically be splitting it into two countries with a UN / NATO controlled border in the middle which they do not want.
There are no 'two sides'
I hate to point this out but if there was no two sides then what the hell is this whole situation for?
I hate to point this out but if there was no two sides then what the hell is this whole situation for?
A DMZ would not work. You cannot set one up if there is no "in between".
This isn't a snowball fight.

No but the rebels need help and I meant blocking the key road on the coast from Gaddafi's Forces
I hate to point this out but if there was no two sides then what the hell is this whole situation for?
Nooo...
I meant the country is not split into north and south like Korea, you can't just set up a DMZ between two 'points', because the towns and cities flip in control all over the country.
You clearly don't understand how a DMZ works. You cannot set one up if there is no "in between".

DMZ is the wrong word I guess, how about a road block
DMZ is the wrong word I guess, how about a road block
Same situation.
Libya does not look like this:
XXXXX | XXXXXXXXXX
XXXXX | XXXXXXXXXX
XXXXX | XXXXXXXXXX
Rebels | Libyan Military
It looks more like this:
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

So the many many Tornados and Harriers which are on rotation on operation in Afghanistan don't exist? And the Eurofighters in various places of UK held territory on intercept duty don't exist either?
What about the various other planes that are just sitting in hangers doing nothing, do they not exist either?
By any chance do you read The Sun?

It's not a lot in comparison to other nations and I know what you mean, 2 Carriers dated to be birthed around about 2016 and 2018 so what does the MOD do, Mothball the one we have in service 5 years before it's replacement is ready.

The Royal Air Force operates about 1,114 aircraft, making it the largest air force in the European Union, the second largest in NATO and the fifth largest in the world, behind the USA, Russia, China and India.
The Fleet Air Arm (FAA) operates nearly 200 aircraft.
The Army Air Corps operates 267 aircraft, including 67 AgustaWestland Apache attack helicopters.
Though I do agree with the carrier decision being dumb.
Same situation.
Libya does not look like this:
Analogies of many X's
Most of the fighting Rebels are in the east right now and the ground infrastructure relies on a few coastal roads, blocking the roads would stop Libya's army in it's stride and allow the rebels to regroup.
This is all very unlikely to happen though

Sending in an armed force to take control of half the country is... a pretty big deal. It involves masses amounts of manpower, diplomacy with the entire middle east, UN mandates, evacuations, international recognition of succession...
And.. yeah, that's pretty much declaring open war.

Really? I was going by what people in the RAF and RN have told me (most of my family and friends of the family are Service).

Blocking a few miles wide of road and a No fly zone is not half the country by any means.
The counter-movement may be in the East (I am not sure of the accuracy of this), but the military is everywhere. This is their own territory we are talking about. The air force is also a formidable asset. Such action would require military reinforcement, and would be grounds for retaliatory attacks against Britain and/or France. War would break out.

The military usually have a pretty dim view of politicians - it doesn't stop the fact that we have a very sizable military. I'm not saying it's particularly powerful or suitable, but we're not going to lose to Africa anytime soon.

Mostly old Libyan Air Force =/= Superpowers worth of Eurofighters and Mirages
It is not going to happen, but if the Western world pulled their finger out and did it, who is going to condemn saving Pro-democrat lives

The country below the coast road is basically Sahara desert, neither side is going to go through it.

Sending enough armour to block a few miles wide of road and instigating a no fly zone is a declaration of bloody sodding war without a UN mandate.
Hell even sending a few soldiers without said mandate can be seen as an act of aggression.

France has recognized the Rebels as a legitimate government, it wouldn't be war, more a policing action to save an ally.

Who? some old fart in the UN? people may deny it but a popular government is the only kind fit to rule, Gaddafi is obviously not popular, nor fit to rule anyway.

One country does not make the world, dude.
Ever heard of a little place called Tibet?
