It's not a failure in the future devlopment. Even if it doesn't perform up to the United States standards, that doesn't mean that at some point in the enar future it won't be a lot better. The fact that the US military chose not to buy it is still quite questionable. Their reason for it were blurry and vague. I suppose if it only performs marginally better, they might not care; marginally better is not worth 300 million dollars.
But if I had to choose whether I'd want to have chunky plate armor, or flexible, lightweight scaling armor, I'd go for the scaling armor since it deteriorates knowhere near as fast, and I don't have to feel like I'mw alking around with bricks on my chest.
If you you are busting into an apartment room, and there is an armed gunman, the shootout may only last 2 seconds. When it comes down to time frames that short, normally marginal differences will make big differences.
When it comes down to it, if you're just sitting at some checkpoint all day, any firefight you might engage in.. you probably won't notice a difference bewteen scaling and plate armor. But if you're fighting indoors, where a split second can make the difference between living or dying, I'd rather stick with scaling armor knowing that it provides better coverage, and offers "marginally" better flexibility.
For your average grunt, plate armor will probably suffice just fine, but anybody who will be fighting CQB would be better off with scaling armor (provide that scaling armor technology gets some improvements)
Actually, I would like to add: though that vest might not have a solid plate inside of it, it will still probably have numerous pouches for magazines and utilities. Your torso also isn't necessary for movements involving your arms and legs such as a combat situation.
Actually, if anything, you're just nutnfancy'ing (YOU NEVER KNOW WHEN THAT SLIGHT SLIGHT DECREASE IN WEIGHT OR SLIGHT INCREASE IN MOBILITY MIGHT SAVE YOU!!!) this whole thing. The difference it would make would be so insignificant that it wouldn't even be considered at all. Oh and newsflash: Most combat occurs within 100 meters. Yet soldiers involved in CQB havn't complained at all about their armour being too cumbersome. Gear doesn't play a major factor in combat effectiveness; training, tactics, and strategy do. The only thing you're showing is your very blatantly limited knowledge of modern combat.
I remember hearing that it didn't live up to the specifications required as being fully effective after X amount of time, and it didn't always live up to its maximum potential.
Regardless I know that it's being used sporadically in the middle east. There was a video of an insurgent hitting a soldier with some form of sniper rifle; dropped the man to the ground, but he got back up and got cover. Was pretty impressive.
Wasn't that on Weaponology or something on Discovery? I'm sure I remember seeing that clip when they were covering the history of body armour.

Look guys, this aint the point! He doesn't care if you're wearing dragon scale, what he is saying is that if that Barret pegs you at 500 yds you're gonna be in the ground.
Fuck that, it'd tear you in half!
Nope.
Nope.
From extremely close range, yes. .50 BMG has a muzzle energy of up to 15 thousand ft lbs; Five times more than the mighty head-splitting .30-06.
Even from 1000 meters away it still has 50% more energy than .30-06.
It's called anti-material for a reason. For infantry, a mere burst would be more than enough to tear a man to shreds.

Bulletproof T-Shirts! :byodood:
But wouldn't flexible bulletproof fabric just move with the bullet and stab you?

Not the energy it carries.

Shirts go on your torso, and if it hit you in the back, behind the heart, can't it cause heart attacks.
I'm pretty sure a punch there can cause them?

It was rejected because they were about as reliable as a $20 1000 watt PSU when put under military testing, and they didn't work well in varying environments.

No.
Sounds like it'd be easy for criminals to use against cops.
Sounds like it'd be easy for criminals to use against cops.
Except cops actually use calibers that can penetrate what sounds like would have a hard time stopping a .22 even.
