Are we only allowed to say positive things about Windows 8 in this thread or something? I'm running it now and have been for months. It definitely has a bastard UI by default. That being said, it has just enough redeeming qualities and it's easy enough to work around to keep me from going back to 7. I haven't kept up with 8.1 so I'm hoping it fixes some of the plain stupid design errors.
I was just making a comment on how most people who pronounce hate for Windows 8 don't provide any substantial argument. The irony being is that was exactly how my post was responded to.
Buyer's remorse general?
You're actually serious aren't you? Well then, let me pull similiar arguments against you. The Windows 8 startscreen is objectively better because it's faster to access programs from and it provides faster local searching due to indexing. My main method of launching programs is to hit the windows key, then type the first couple of letters in the programs name, then hit enter. This takes less than a second due to the fast search. But seriously, presenting your opinion as a fact is just straight up dumb. I would never go back to Windows 7, because I'm very much a fan of the speed Windows 8 provides.
I was under the impression that a few applications and games don't work properly if it's not disabled.
those have been fixed ages ago most were mods not stand alone games or software

If your argument about 8.1 is "it fucking sucks and is statistically wrong" followed by "you're all wrong and suffering buyer's remorse" it'd get a slap on the wrist, but given that one guy's ban history he needs a wake up call
Upgraded! Yay I can now set my metro desktop the same wallpaper as my actual desktop! Any other changes I might want to know about? This is like the only thing I saw mentioned.
So is there any "fix" for people who can't find it in the store? I don't have any updates available on windows update.
This download is taking forever. [editline]17th October 2013[/editline]
So is there any "fix" for people who can't find it in the store? I've done an assload of reboots to no avail.
http://news.softpedia.com/news/Windows-8-1-Not-Available-for-Some-Users-392109.shtml "While Windows 8.1 should be there for most people, one of the reasons while you can’t see it right now is that Microsoft is releasing it gradually across the world, in an attempt to make the updating process as smooth as possible".
Their servers must be really overloaded at the moment
Completely re-installed sound card drivers (had some problems uninstalling) and headset drivers. Everything's working. Haven't restarted yet.
Um so I checked that this pc shit out after you mentioned it. Why did they do that, it looks totally out of place (the name) [t]https://dl.dropbox.com/u/5483751/Photos/2013-10-17_21-12-38.png[/t] and they added a bunch of useless shortcuts to folders I don't use, instead of providing me direct access to my partitions and network drives :( [editline]edit[/editline] Hm seems to be kind of ok now after collapsing it. Still annoying.

Be patient, it will make your download faster than it would be to have every update at once.
It doesn't not run, but windows always throws this error. I've not actually had a problem with Avast on 8.1 Preview. [editline]17th October 2013[/editline] I can get to the page on the store but I'm still getting the same error I was getting earlier (see the third screenshot in the OP)
Well I have the full 8.1 update, and the latest version of avast and I can run avast, run scans, and everything and no errors come up.

Libraries and Computer were best always separate though. I actually like the system settings update though, it looks quite nice in my opinion. FYI, for those who haven't upgraded, this is the "This PC" screen from the preview.
So, will Start8 work with 8.1? Anyone here use it + 8.1?
You can hide those folders, right?
Well I have the full 8.1 update, and the latest version of avast and I can run avast, run scans, and everything and no errors come up.
Same goes for my laptop on the preview.
So, will Start8 work with 8.1? Anyone here use it + 8.1?
Update to 1.30. It'll work.
The only problem I had with it is that the folders are above the drives. You can fix that by changing the group order from ascending to descending. You can also make the libraries show up in a group of it's own (ribbon -> view -> navigation pane -> show libraries). That doesn't remove them from the "This PC" group though.
Update to 1.30. It'll work.
Thanks, will install 8.1 as soon as Sweden gets it on the store.
So, will Start8 work with 8.1? Anyone here use it + 8.1?
Yep, happily using it after updating.
You can hide those folders, right?
Only collapse the group. But you can also sort it differently (which is better IMO):
You can rename "Computer" to whatever in Windows 8, so I take it you should probably be able to rename "This PC" in 8.1. and other than the name, that doesn't seem so bad.
I enjoy it so far, seems to be a pretty solid improvement over vanilla 8 in my opinion
Guys my metro screens are all grey, how do I change this back to blue-ish???? [t]https://dl.dropbox.com/u/5483751/Photos/2013-10-17_21-23-10.png[/t]
Same goes for my laptop on the preview.
Does your Avast look like this?
[t]https://dl.dropbox.com/u/5483751/Photos/2013-10-17_21-25-56.png[/t] Does this seem like the right colour?
