Hm weird. I did get rid of Media Center, by reinstalling windows 8 :v: Media center made the camera app not able to use my build-in webcam (among other problems which I forgot about) so I don't really plan on installing it again. [editline]17th October 2013[/editline] Well that's what I said and you called me entitled??
if you want the things in the old start menu that the right-click menu doesn't offer maybe try uh left clicking
Well that's what I said and you called me entitled??
if you think you deserve a "proper" start menu alternative (what an arbitrary qualifier), you are acting entitled. install start 8 and quit crying
if you think you deserve a "proper" start menu alternative (what an arbitrary qualifier), you are acting entitled. install start 8 and quit crying
I did?? Meppers is the one who started this by implying something probably along the lines of how we're crybabes or something, because we like a full classic start menu and 'didn't know about the right click start menu'.
Done it. Weird that some people can't edit the OP on SH and I can, maybe Garry fixed it...
It's touch and go.

Meppers is the one who started this by implying something probably along the lines of how we're crybabes or something, because we like a full classic start menu and 'didn't know about the right click start menu'.
you said it's not a "proper alternative." those are literally your words. meppers made no such implication, he just said "haha I don't know how people don't know about the right click menu" where upon that sentence does it imply you're a crybaby for not liking the start screen?
[t]http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a56/Billy2600/win81screenshot_zpsb4627bcc.png[/t] Aww yeah desktop background on start screen. I'm liking this.
Seriously? This: [t]https://dl.dropbox.com/u/5483751/Photos/2013-10-17_22-17-56.png[/t] Is not this: [t]https://dl.dropbox.com/u/5483751/Photos/2013-10-17_22-18-18.png[/t] There is no discussion, it simply isn't the same, period.
[t]http://i.cubeupload.com/Fu3l8x.jpg[/t] ???

He's implying the right click start menu is a proper replacement of the classic start menu. I'm saying it's not. Metro's start menu is probably a proper replacement when you get used to it, I never said it isn't. I'm talking only about the right click start menu.
It's not d/l'ing. -.-'
[t]http://i.cubeupload.com/Fu3l8x.jpg[/t] ???
Exactly my point? I use it mainly for the quick start list, which it doesn't have.
Exactly my point? I use it mainly for the quick start list, which it doesn't have.
Just use hotkeys. http://www.hongkiat.com/blog/windows-8-keyboard-shortcuts/
It's not d/l'ing. -.-'
It's really, really slow. I've been downloading it for about an hour now on a connection that should have it done in about 20 minutes.
It makes more sense that it implies what I think it implies because one of the major points of windows 8.1 is the return of the classic start menu...
that was never a major point lmao, they just brought back the start button. if he had said "metro haters have never discovered the right click menu haha" I would be inclined to agree with you. but the implication you are describing seems like you're putting words in his mouth
It's not d/l'ing. -.-'
It takes a really long time to.
It's really, really slow. I've been downloading it for about an hour now on a connection that should have it done in about 20 minutes.
I changed mine wifi connection to an "Un-metered network", it's now on 4%.

Also, just in case you didn't know.. on Windows 8, you can access that shortlist menu that mobrockers is flipping his shit over by right clicking in the bottom left hand corner of the desktop or metro screen.
it's a legitimate concern but he's trying to compare the panel meant specifically for settings to the shortlist for some reason.
Exactly my point? I use it mainly for the quick start list, which it doesn't have.
metro's UI is a quickstart and desktop icon kind of combo, frequent programs are always available and you can reorganize them pretty quickly into groupings, you don't need all the weird live tiles and shortcuts to shovelware up front. Yeah it's a separate screen and it's pretty unnecessary on desktops, but it's not the end of the world; I think the disconnection isn't quite as bad as it felt before now that you keep your desktop background in it, it's more of an overlay than entirely leaving what you were doing. Personally I'd prefer smaller icons, but with 8.1 you can actually open straight to your applications list, which has smaller icons, lists with full names of things, and everything arranged alphabetically for you. If the search bar is your issue just start typing and it swaps to search mode. If you have a few programs you frequent so much that you have to have them readily available on the start menu like before, why not pin them to your task bar or keep a shortcut on your desktop?
It's very annoying that I have to turn on UAC just to open the store. I'll do it, install 8.1, and turn off UAC again after two or three resets of my computer.
I find UAC to be far less intrusive, and if you install games to C:/Games like I do it affects nearly nothing, as the only thing that really still uses the install folder to store config info would be games
it's a legitimate concern but he's trying to compare the panel meant specifically for settings to the shortlist for some reason. metro's UI is a quickstart and desktop icon kind of combo, frequent programs are always available and you can reorganize them pretty quickly into groupings, you don't need all the weird live tiles and shortcuts to shovelware up front. Now that the search is truly unified (like wtf microsoft, having to switch to a different tab with other search results is not cool) that's very nice as well. Being able to easily go to your app list is also a major improvement, but I still don't much care for it, and start8 serves me fine. The only thing I didn't like was meppers comment, as if I'm some kind of idiot for wanting the old menu back.
MSE + common sense seems to be doing its job well enough for me though. I've not had virus problems in well over a year.
MSE + MBAM + commonsense
I hate the "This PC" thing, it's terrible, although it does provide some useful shortcuts. Libraries and Computer were best always separate though. I actually like the system settings update though, it looks quite nice in my opinion. FYI, for those who haven't upgraded, this is the "This PC" screen from the preview.
I like it. I just hit the folder and it gives me the choice of Libraries or Computer. Normally it would always just take me to library and I'd have to click extra to find Computer. I like this feature. [editline]17th October 2013[/editline]
No one ever used the ugly ass start menu so they got rid of it and condensed it into a right click.
Guys, when you're in this window: [t]https://dl.dropbox.com/u/5483751/Photos/2013-10-17_23-39-09.png[/t] Don't select the folders thing and press the hide button up right. It does not hide that submenu.. [t]https://dl.dropbox.com/u/5483751/Photos/2013-10-17_23-40-45.png[/t] :/ [editline]17th October 2013[/editline] Oh thank god if you press the hide button again it un-hides everything. Phew.
Mine still says gathering info
I just gave up waiting for it to appear on the Store, downloaded the legal ISO and did a clean install using the setup tool. You can also do a non-clean install as well.
what the fuck microsoft my laptop's uefi/bios doesn't even have secure boot as an option
Only losers use windows 8. [editline]Jokes aside[/editline] Jokes aside, I actually like the windows 8 start menu. I wonder if there is a way to use both the new one and the old one.
