My metro apps work fine with UAC off.
Did you edit the registry entry "EnableLUA" in "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System"? And is it set to zero?
If not, its not really off, just that the prompts are disabled.
What is the benefit of doing this over turning the setting off?
I think the difference is that UAC is still running with the slider off, but assumes you want to give admin privileges to everything that asks for it. UAC being off simply means run everything as admin, even apps that don't ask to run as admin (a-la XP style priveleges). I think that's the difference.
Microsoft specifically doesn't allow Metro apps to run with UAC disabled which is by design. Which is why I'm confused that they are saying that their Metro apps work with it disabled. AFAIK, there isn't a workaround, and if there is, you would probably be aware that you did it.

what the fuck microsoft
my laptop's uefi/bios doesn't even have secure boot as an option
Mine does, sadly I cant remember the BIOS password, and pulling the CMOS battery isn't an option :(
It took all night to download and when I woke up I got:
same problem here

Done!
Whoa there
What are those icons and how do I get them?
(and is it a 8.1 thing? Downloading at the moment so I wouldn't know)

the icons im sure is from a separate program but the grouping is built in
I'm just gonna drop this here: Classic Shell
Same thing as Start8 and StartisBack, but with a little more. It also allows you choose the skin, meaning if you really, really liked the WinXP start menu, you can have that. You also have the ability to modify the Explorer as well.
Best part of it all? It's free. Works with Win7, Win8, and Win8.1.
Well, poop.
Downloaded and started to install, but when it booted and started to do the real install process it froze to 79% for hours and didn't go anywhere.
Had to boot the machine, because it wasn't doing anything and then it just went all to shit. Had to do a system restore to revert the changes.
Anyone else had anything similar?
the icons im sure is from a separate program but the grouping is built in
I know about the grouping, it was a blessing to find that thing. But I meant the big icons with fancy artwork to them. My buttons look so insanely boring.
It's been downloading for an hour and a half and is like ~1/4 of the way done
Strangely enough I've actually been looking forward to this version
I don't really like the automatic colouring on the start screen, anyone know how I can make all my icons the same theme/colour again?
For the performance it's definitely worth upgrading to 8. You get used to Metro eventually.
What do you mean by performance? I wasn't aware there was that much of a difference apart from mobrockers mentioned below.
I switched, I quite like the faster start up, shutdown and hibernate speeds but other than that I don't use any windows 8 features (such as metro).
Do you use an SSD? I hear SSD start up can be quicker too although I am running a 256GB Samsung 830 at SATA2 so I lose out on quite a bit of performance that way.

To say SSDs start quicker is a huge understatement. Switchin to SSDs was one of the best hardware decisions I've made. Takes me 5 seconds from hitting the button to getting to the login screen compared to my previous 50-60.
I meant in comparison to SSD boot time on Win7
I meant in comparison to SSD boot time on Win7
A lot faster because of the fast startup stuff.

I don't have an ssd and it takes me about 8 seconds to login screen. I'm not sure how could it take you a minute to boot there. Even on win7 it took me about 15 seconds max to get to login screen.
There's still no way to disable VSync in DWM, so the only way to play games without vsync is in full screen mode, gg microsoft. Also, you apparently *must have* a microsoft account to update to 8.1
Guess i'll move back to 7 yet again.

Well, the harddrive I had prior was pretty much failing on me. It very conveniently crashed completely when I got a new computer. So in the end the harddrive wasn't the only thing I changed, which could probably help v:v:v
why is no one bothered by this anymore? i don't want to register yet another microsoft throwaway account just so i can update and then delete this shit again
why is no one bothered by this anymore? i don't want to register yet another microsoft throwaway account just so i can update and then delete this shit again
A) Make a spam account you can use everywhere and memorize it (emails are not hard to remember really)
B) Tie your gmail to Outlook, thus letting you use your regular email for MS saving you every problem ever
It's not that hard, and it's not an annoyance unless you make it one.
I caught a Sirefef trojan the other day and removed it successfully, but now all my Win8 apps are unable to connect to the internet (desktop stuff works). I wouldn't care that much about that, but 8.1 can only be downloaded over the Store -_-
Does anyone have an idea of how that could be fixed? Google has told me nothing, unfortunately.
I don't like how it pushes you to make a microsoft account and sign you in as it by default, only for me to sign back in as local user and disable my pointless new microsoft account, because that's just a bit fucking dodgy, they felt the need to reinstall all the apps I deleted, I know they're trying to plug their services but that was just inconvenient to set up
I'm getting pretty annoyed at not being able to get this through the store, could somebody direct me to the ISO that some users said they used?
For Those who get this:

Follow these steps:
The issue seems to be with the download. Probably an internet connection issue. I would suggest you to refer to the steps and check if it helps:
Try these steps:
Step 1
Install all available windows updates:
To check for updates
Open Windows Update in Control Panel by swiping in from the right edge of the screen, tapping Search (or, if you're using a mouse, pointing to the upper-right corner of the screen, moving the mouse pointer down, and then clicking Search), entering Windows Update in the search box, tapping or clicking Settings, and then tapping or clicking Install optional updates.
In the left pane, tap or click Check for updates, and then wait while Windows looks for the latest updates for your PC.
If updates are found, tap or click Install updates.
Read and accept the license terms, and then tap or click Finish if the update requires it. You might be asked for an admin password or to confirm your choice.
Step 2
Reset Windows Store
a. Press Windows key + Q.
b. In the Search box type WSReset.exe and hit enter.
That should reset your cache for the store.
Now try the download
Step 3
Clear all temporary files from the computer
Delete all the temp files.
a) Press Windows key + S.
b) Type %temp% in search box and press enter.
c) A window will open showing you all temporary files.
d) Select all those files by pressing ctrl + A and after selecting delete them by pressing DEL button.
Step 4
Reset BITS queue by running the command.
Press Windows key + X, select Command Prompt as admin.
Type the command bitsadmin /reset /allusers and enter.
Try store installation again.
This all worked for me and 8.1 installed flawlessly on my first retry

maybe if you didn't register throwaway accounts you wouldn't have to keep making them (p.s. you can still set up local users)

I was about to say, mine just asked for my existing login, and asked if I want to link it to a Microsoft account. I just said later and I was on my way. Doesn't seem very forced if I got around it so easily.

I'd like to know this too :v: Would like to make my Start Screen usable but right now it just looks unappealing.

it can't possibly be a forced requirement because if Win8.1 is installed on a computer without an internet connection (yes, these exist) then how are you going to authenticate your credentials?
not that this is a direct response to you, just an addendum I guess

To be fair, mine was one of those. I have to authenticate my university ID through Cisco NAC for Internet access. Not really possible when Windows 8.1 is still installing. Might explain why it didn't egg me on about it.
I'll be honest, it would be a much better way to update if they gave a simple .exe like previous service packs/updates.
