No society should be based off religious texts because it naturally will treat non-conformists poorly.

I mean, how would you feel if the United States threw out the Constitution and replaced it with the Bible? No matter how loose of an interpretation it is, it's going to suck for some people.
I never said I was in favour of sharia, but the majority of Facepunch have no clue what it is, and instead go for the view that applied sharia law always results in executions, torture and more. And while this might be the case in some places where sharia law is applied, it's definitely not a necessary feature.
I'm not in favour of judicial systems based off religious traditions or writings, but if a majority of the people want sharia law, I can't condemn them unless the judicial system goes against human rights by punishing people with inhumane punishments. It's their democratical right to form their own laws. But I welcome Tunisia's decision to remain secular after the ousting of Ben Ali.
And to be frank, politicians in the U.S. are infamous for having religious values, it's not exactly unusual to hear that politicans want to write laws based on religious morality (e.g. wanting to outlaw abortion, wanting to ban same-sex marriage, wanting to teach religion/creationism in school, wanting to undermine sexual education by teaching abstinence instead, etc. etc.), and as long as these politicians have the support of the people they can legitimately pass those laws.
Lastly, any judicial system naturally treats non-conformists badly.
