Secondly, the problem isn't the market. Criminals or mentally insane gun users don't/can't just stroll into a Wal-Mart and pick up the latest Remington HeadSeeker 9000 Baby-edition. The whole underlying issue (from what I have seen, and I think everyone else should see) is the lack of responsibility on (a very small, small fraction) of gun owners. Unfortunately, you can legislate stupidity. If you could, there would a whole lot less accidents on the road, and the news would run out of stories. Individual purchases in the state of Florida (my state) are unregulated, but the purchase from stores are not, and even more-so for handguns (which 90%+ of crimes are committed with).
Once people start getting proper firearm education, then I would be willing to guarantee that crime rates will plummet. By "firearm education", I am talking about children who are around them and the parents alike. They need to know that a gun is always loaded, how to hold it when people are around you (and when not to hold it when people are around), how to properly store them away from children who can't use them, etc. It might seem like that's a really passive way to tackle a huge, and like someone else said, complex issue like this, but it also makes the most sense rather than trying to throw legislation on frightening and made up terms like "assault weapons".

Except this isn't true. You can't just go out and buy a gun on a whim.
A couple of things that we do to try and restrict sales:
-If you want to buy a gun out of state you have to pay the seller to ship the gun to an FFL in your state, then pay that FFL guy to release it over to you. If you fail either background check you don't get the gun.
-You must pass an NCIS background check to purchase any gun from a shop or store (Personal Sales do not have this requirement, and IMO they shouldn't. It isn't up to the government to decide what we can and cannot sell ourselves. Most people who sell guns are extremely careful about who they sell to, though. I make up Bills of Sales and take down the buyer's name, phone number, date of birth, and driver's license #.)
-If you're purchasing a hand gun there's a waiting period of at least 3 days in almost every state (If you have a concealed carry permit that generally waives the waiting period since it means you've been previously tested and found competent of carrying a firearm)
-You generally can't buy more than 2 handguns per month or you'll be flagged and your subsequent attempts at purchasing them will be denied by NCIS
-All gun store owners have the right to refuse to sell to someone based on how they personally feel about you and the vibe they get from you. I've watched gun store owners flat out refuse to even show guns to thug types and ask them to leave. They don't want to lose their license for nothing.
Granted, sure, none of this stops criminals who steal guns from law abiding citizens or smuggle them across the border from Mexico and sell them on the street but honestly no amount of legislation and laws placed on law abiding gun owners is going to stop THAT.
