I don't even recognize this world we live in anymore.
On topic: Glad to see common sense prevailed in Scotland; now rather than breaking up and weakening we can focus on remaining strong together against the many external threats we face.
Can someone explain what people are talking about when they're going on about Federalism?

Look at how grateful he is

Good god, all is lost.
Can someone explain what people are talking about when they're going on about Federalism?
Afaik basically the current system of US government i.e. states get to decide on a much broader range of policy e.g. taxation and spending on public services, with only a few issues solely decided by a central government, such as national defence. I think Australia runs on a similar system as well.
Can someone explain what people are talking about when they're going on about Federalism?
Federalism is when you essentially have a bunch of "member states" that make up the country (states, provinces, countries, etc) and you have a federal government that mainly does foreign relation shit and makes certain federal laws. Examples of Federal coutnries include Canada, Australia, USA, etc. All their states and provinces have local legislative assemblies, and in the case of Canada and the US, each province/state can collect it's own revenue (provincial tax, state tax) and spend that money on their own shit. State and Provincial laws as well.
UK is weird, Scotland, Wales and NI are given federal-ish powers (ie: devolution), but people in England have no powers because there is a false de-facto assumption that the UK parliament is the English parliment (spoiler: it's not), and the UK government behaves as a central government.
If the UK was federated it would loosely mean that England would receive it's own separate government or governments, as would Wales, NI and Scotland remain their own state entities. England would likely need to be broken up into various states or provinces because of England's disproportionately high population relative to the already devolved countries, in order for federalism to work properly. Likewise areas like Northern England would probably benefit from having their own local legislative assemblies
Its time for Piers Morgan to carry out his Forfeit now.

If Quebec serves as an accurate comparison you guys should buckle in for about 20+ years of constant ridicule and people crackin' wise about scotland though, losing a referendum is like blood in the water for sharks. Maybe Brits are not as conceitedly mean-spirited as Canadians though, we'll have to see :v:
Canadians are the friendliest people to everyone except the Quebecois.
But it's mostly the quebecois inferiority complex we're laughing at. I mean really... a language police? Also, they're very unfriendly when compared to the rest of Canada.
Scotland =/= quebec.
Highlands has voted no too.
I think this has to be one of the most Active threads. I mean The Fappening was huge but I think this has more people that are just posting.

Businesses like Eatons and HBC, and others, used to discriminate against french speakers in the 1940s-1970s IIRC, and in cities like Montreal they would hire people who only spoke English. Since then we have had bilingualism language acts established and stuff that forces those companies to enfranchise french speakers
The concept of language police seems dumb now but to older people who still have bad memories of being blatantly disenfranchised that's the world they grew up in and probably still see today.
It's likely that complex will go away in time as there are fewer quebecois who had to deal with discrimination growing up, and there is legal protection in the form of bilingualism that forces enfranchisement of french speakers.

You seem to forget that there was also massive discrimination against the anglophones in quebec as well, a little thing called the FLQ crisis. My mother was driven out of quebec in fact, after a neighbor of hers received a mailbomb.
It isn't bilingualism in Quebec, the law pretty much states that all businesses must have signs with french being the prominent language. And all business must be conducted in french. It's ludicrous to be honest.

FLQ was a reactionary movement that happened mostly after the period I mentioned and in response to the period I mentioned.
You're right about bilingualism in quebec, but as french is a minority language and english is spoken in every other province, it gets certain protections. English is not going to vanish from Canada, French on the other hand could, given time if disenfranchising in quebec became a common occurrence.
FLQ was a reactionary movement that happened after the period I mentioned and in response to the period I mentioned.
That makes the FLQ crisis sound like a minor event in comparison to the events you mentioned. And moreover, it glosses over the fact that this hostility works both ways.
Honestly... thats a damn weird thing to say to be honest.
[editline]19th September 2014[/editline]
Like, you wouldn't consider The Troubles an event that happened in between acts of intolerance against northern irishmen.
Alright well you just keep up your part of the hostility and we'll see how it works out in the longrun. Two wrongs make a right after all.
Alright well you just keep up your part of the hostility and we'll see how it works out in the longrun. Two wrongs make a right after all.
If you consider this hostility... you need to reevaluate that. Honestly all I'm doing is discussing it with you, and saying both sides are at fault.
Francophones get so damn antsy about this sometimes. "L'OPPRESSION!"

I can't speak a word of french and I'm from BC :v: (assuming you're implying i'm from quebec)
I just don't understand why people made such a fight to get Quebec to stay, only to spend the next 15 years just endlessly berating them about it. Might be how Scotland will play out as well

It's because what the separatists wanted was to break away from Canada but still have full financial support from it. You can't bloody do that, and even if you could, what's the damn point in independence if you're still economically dependent? You'd be doing nothing.
There's no popular massive gossip around without the Simpsons' point of view apparently.
