What would make gay marriage harder to control?
-Edit-
Actually I would argue that our society in the current state it is in now, is not prepared for gay marriage. We don't even have control over straight marriage.
Control?
What?
What part of marriage needs control? What the hell are you talking about?

The rate of divorce is growing exponentially. Downturns are never a good time for true societal changes, it just leads to yelling and screaming which gives people like conservatives a perfect chance to gain power.

And I don't literally mean control, I mean grasp, how we handle it as a culture and society.
I'm for gay marriage, just now is definitely not the right time.

And I don't literally mean control, I mean grasp, how we handle it as a culture and society.
That is absolutely, 100% wrong. Divorce rates peaked in the 1990s, but they have seen a HUGE decrease in the past ten years, mostly because less people are getting married. Why? Because they don't have to get married, it isn't a requirement in society anymore.

My bad....God damn statistics....
But you wouldn't be able to tell with how much emphasis our culture places on marriage still to this day. And it doesn't help with people fighting for gay marriage as well. Its not a requirement, why fight for it?
Actually, the only legitimate claim against gay marriage is religious. That one claim is the only thing that's keeping gay marriage from happening, so I think religion has everything to do with this.
No it doesn't, what the fuck is wrong with you?
Religion should hold NO sway in legislation

60% of marriages end in divorce, I'm pretty sure if it above or lower doesn't matter, that number is still high.

There are so many legal implications of marriage that saying it's not needed is silly--especially if you bring children into the picture. In fact, that's a lot of what this is about.

You have to ask yourself why though. Here's a little hint--divorce rates are almost double in Christian communities. People are not getting married because they love eachother--they are getting married because it's tradition.
Maybe it's time we redefine marriage? Maybe that's what this whole fight is about?
Duh?

Why don't we just throw out the over romanticized idea? Its a fucking stupid idea that puts a shit load of expectations on guys and girls. It doesn't prove you love someone, it just proves you'd spend a large amount of money to make it look like it. If you love someone, why do you need to spend that kind of money. I thought being with the ones you love is important not paying an exorbitant amount of cash for them over superficial objects or traditions..:colbert:

It's about commitment and trust. Maybe I personally want to spend the money on my partner, maybe I want to have the legal bonds and the official recognition of our relationship.
If you don't want to ever get married, that's perfectly okay. No one's forcing you. But like it or not, there's a very real need for marriage.

not really
marriage is a want

By a group of traditions that actually go completely against our instinctual traditions. I just don't get it, its somehow become a right of passage like American prom and other bullshit traditions I don't fundamentally agree with.
And its a want. People "want" to get married to show how much they love each other.

So, society isn't ready to accept gay marriage, but throwing out the concept of marriage entirely is apparently a valid suggestion. I agree with you - marriage is stupid and over-romanticized and all that, but pardon me if your statements ring inconsistent to me.

I know they can be completely hypocritical sometimes. The first responses was the fact that marriage is an idea that is here to stay. ON a personal opinion, I wish we could throw the idea out all together.
not really

Wrong, plain and simple wrong.
You know nothing of our legal system or how the basic world works. Come back and discuss this with me in 5 years.

really the only reason to get married is because of tax cuts and other government benefits.

I don't know why I try though, everyone in this thread is under the age of 14 it's obvious.
That was one of the worse posts I've read in a looong ass fucking time.

Its a want, just like anything else. the only thing we need is the bare essentials to survive and thrive. Marriage actually completely goes against the male instinct to spread his seed. Riddle me how a need conflicts with another like that.
No, you were told to be quiet while an adult talks young child.
aren't you like a 15 year old gay conservative furry?
[editline]03:11AM[/editline]
and you're acting like a 5 year old, make a fucking argument.
Who cares! Let them do what they want.

dude, I don't even know your position. You're acting like such a chump, I don't even know what your opinion is. Other than you think all of us, including me a 19 year old, is 14.

Would you stuff it?
No, not everyone in this thread is under 14, you're just over-reacting and incapable of clear thought. Marriage is not something you need to survive. It's something you want to have, and it being a want isn't wrong.
Jesus christ, would you come off your imaginary high horse and think about things for a second?

Jesus christ, would you come off your imaginary high horse and think about things for a second?
I never once said that marriage was needed by everyone. In fact, if you would read, I said the opposite--it is nothing but want. The reason so many marriages have failed is because of liberty vs societal traditions of marriage; without there being an honest desire for the long term commitment, marriage won't last in today's world. I did, however, say it provides many benefits and it has a very real and needed place in society as a whole, for the people who so desire it. The idea that marriage is nothing but romanticized thought is asinine.
Please tell me how this is unclear thought.

Take a look at my facebook :v:
It directly says I'm 18....You see my avatar? That's a picture of me getting ready for senior prom. Shush you...Its a want. You've obviously fallen for the cultural idea that the only true way to be happy is to marry.

Long story, anyway. I'm just helping disprove his idea that we're all immature brats...to some degree.
