There's no reason for the end user to have the java virtual machine installed.
I'm not sure what that has to do with my response, but okay.

On the web, Java is still handing a large bundle of features that HTML5 can't handle just yet. Suites like CreateJS work in tandem with the HTML5 canvas to produce some crazy web shit.
Javascript is not the same as Java. Even if it has the word "Java" in the name.
There's a very big difference between Java applets and Android.
It's still horrible on Android though, but that's because the needs have outgrown the capabilities and performance of the java-based engine on Android.
Google should REALLY move on to native code, preferable C++ since that and Google's java version have a fair lot in common.
Or maybe Assembly, but that's mostly for self-hating programmers.
lol are you serious?
litterally no software uses java in 2012
[editline]19th October 2012[/editline]
theres still some business software on java, but minecraft is p much the only consumer application that still uses it.
I'll be honest, I still use a few Java programs to get certain things done, like Pakrat for packing materials and models into maps for easy distribution, and a few other tools (I forget the name, but one of them extends audio to crazy lengths for ambiance generation). Minecraft really is not the only thing made in Java that people use.
All abord the Apple-hate circle jerk! CHOO CHOO

Maybe it's just me, but I haven't seen a web-based Java applet since 2001 anyway. Had I not seen this news, I would have never known if they removed it from Safari.

My banks web-banking system is entirely Java based.

people with os x dont need web banking anyway because they spent all their money on their mac
How will they play RuneScape?
Javascript is not the same as Java. Even if it has the word "Java" in the name.
Ah hell, I knew there was a difference years ago too. Wasn't thinking, my bad. v:v:v
How will they play RuneScape?
RS client doesn't actually require java to be installed anymore. I guess the 5 people who play run escape on mac really dodged a bullet there.
After reading this thread it seems like no one in here (People saying what uses Java any more) realise Android exists.
Yeah, and Android apps don't run on Macs or PCs so whats your point.
Javascript is not the same as Java. Even if it has the word "Java" in the name.
that has always bothered me so much
I don't like all these different languages dying, especially the people calling for it to die.
Seriously, its a massive programming circlejerk but I'm not going to jump in when I'm a novice C++ programmer at best.
Yeah, and Android apps don't run on Macs or PCs so whats your point.
He's saying that java is still being used and isn't completely obsolete because other people in the thread are claiming Java is completely useless.

I agree that Java on Android is kind of shitty, but lol if you think C++ is better. (it's not)
They need to support Python or Google's own Go language.
This is like Actionscript all over again.
Everyone wants HTML5 but I've never seen any vector based animation program built around HTML 5 nor do I think it will ever happen.
Python I do support because Python is awesome :v:

They're way ahead of you here. They released the "Native Development Kit" for Android that allows coding in C and C++ a while back.

Adobe realized that Flash might not be around forever as a plugin, and they're working on HTML5 tools (Adobe Edge Animate). Supposedly they'll add HTML5 export to Flash as well.
He's saying that java is still being used and isn't completely obsolete because other people in the thread are claiming Java is completely useless.
The Java on Android isn't really the same Java on the Desktop. That's why Oracle sued Google.
Yeah, the language itself is the same, but the virtual machines to run that code are completely different.
And if you leave an Apple in the Windows, the SUN will make it go bad.
I think penguins can eat apples too.
but it seems like Apple is doing to Java what they did to Flash a few years ago: they seem to want it dead
And this time, for good reason.

apple wants to kill off everything that html 5 can do better
i dont see the issue here
apple wants to kill off everything that html 5 can do better

I'd be surprised if apple wants to push HTML 5 and isn't purely doing this because java is ridiculously susceptible to attacks.
apple wants to kill off everything that html 5 can do better

P. sure HTML 5 can't do half of what Java can, y'know, seeing as one is an entire programming language with libraries galore, and one is a markup language that defines what something looks like.
Java still has a place in computing, but its place on the Internet via the Applet things is rapidly becoming non-existent thanks to JavaScript and a few HTML 5 elements really stepping up the game. That and because Oracle haven't actually improved the damn thing noticeably in years.
So they hate Java now? So what are they going to support? Sumatra? Sulawesi? Borneo even?
Honestly, I'm not so sure about that.
In some environments java is becoming something of a taboo because of how hard oracle is fucking it over. It's long term prospects are somewhat open for debate. Even a couple colleges in my area are trying to determine if they should be using it in introductory coursework.
Well apart from a huge load of stuff running on java, like bank login applets and others. If apple removes java and refuses to give support a lot of people would be forced to find alternate browsers which actually support java.
And since apple doesn't have sufficient marketshare to actually make most of those spaces stop using java....

At most, it'll get sites to have a link to install the official Oracle Java runtime for Mac users.
