Fran O’Hagan is a methodical guy who’s baffled as to why Tesla stores year after year score so low in an annual mystery-shopping study of dealership sales effectiveness.
...
He speaks of “a huge variation” in the automaker’s store-to-store sales effectiveness.
For example, a few Tesla dealerships do all the right things. “They want you to buy, and prepare you to buy,” O’Hagan says.
But such good habits are outweighed by lackings mystery shoppers found at most other Tesla stores where the staffers tended to act like “museum curators,” O’Hagan says.
They spoke knowledgeably about the products and answered customer questions, but shied away from asking for the sale in an ill-advised demonstration of underselling.

i'm pretty sure they aren't trying to use good tactics because they're trying to attract a specific audience to their cars, which doesn't need a lot of marketing. i figure that they'll then start to sell better when they've "perfected" the electric car.
I feel like Tesla cars sell themselves. I visited a Tesla store a few months ago in a luxury mall in Indianapolis and it was an extremely pleasant experience. I got to look around the car, the employee was very relaxed in showing me the car and offered to arrange a test drive. No pressure, no annoyance, and I left wanting a Telsa more than ever. I don't need someone pressuring me to get a sale that day at any cost. I feel like Tesla treats the stores as just a showroom with the majority of actual sales happening online, which they don't mind because they are not independent dealerships trying to get the sale for themselves.
Oh my their salespeople aren't aggressive go getters... darn if only Tesla had a product that could sell itself (side question, why can't a model S litterally sell itself through some kind of demonstration mode yet?)
This is the most useless metric for anything ever.
If anything, this article tells me I should never set foot in an Infinity dealership.
The fact that I can go into a Tesla store and test drive a fast luxury vehicle without having marketing shit shoved down my throat is why I like going to Tesla stores. The reps take you for a drive and show you all of the fancy features. If I have any financing questions they are happy to answer but they focus more on getting the word spread rather than selling you a car.
Tesla is at least trying to break the stereotype of the shady cars salesman who needs to get 10 vehicles off the lot by the end of the week.
Seems like they're just trying to find excuses to shit on Tesla. The only legitimate complaints I have with Tesla are that you can't modify your cars(don't see why you would want to stance it though and it's not like you can fit a turbo on it) and my friend told me that mold can grow on and in the car because of the eco-friendly materials they use

Seriously fuck pushy sales tactics. If anything this should be encouraging people to buy a Tesla.

I mean, it's got a full web browser, so really there's nothing stopping you from buying your Tesla from inside a Tesla.

You can modify a Tesla it just takes a completely different skill set than a regular ICE car. Some guy retrofitted his non-autopilot "classic" Model S with Autopilot for about $10k. The car runs Ubuntu so you can do whatever you want on it if you can root it, which is a bit of a complicated process that requires you take the dash out.

Well except that the web browser is a pile of shit.

Musk better deliver that Android App mirror feature he promised before my Model 3 arrives.
Or Android Auto, that would be just fine.
Or the cancelled Tesla App API. I'll happily make this shit myself if I have to.
Car commercials most of the time are pretty dumb and transparent. Get a British person to do a voice over for a commercial to make people think only sophisticated people drive it. Get a guy with a nice southern drawl to narrate a pickup truck commercial create the idea that only manly men drive it.
staffers tended to act like “museum curators,
This is how any store staff should be, I fucking hate when they start to sweet-talk me into buying whatever the store sells
If I came with the intention of buying something I'm gonna buy it anyways
Although it's not their fault, it's their supervisors' fault for basically telling SELL SELL SELL WE NEED 200% 300% 900% PROFITS TALK WHATEVER YOU WANT BUT JUST SELL IT !!!!!!

The guy who made a few i3 ads for BMW made an unofficial one for Telsa:

It's because Tesla doesn't need to go through dealerships like every other major car company, they don't need good salesmen.

this one feels powerful, especially with nikola tesla's speech overlaid on it
i wish more car manufacturers would follow tesla's steps and have the ability to just buy the damn thing without a third party.
Good. There's nothing worse than walking into a store and being bombarded by people trying to shove shit in your face and make you buy it.
When I go car shopping and employees asked "how can I get your business today" I just walk out.
Car salesmen are generally scummy. I had some outright lie to me because they could tell I was naive at the time. I wanted to know the terms of a loan and how much it would cost. They asked me to sign what they said was a credit check and assured me I wasn't buying the car. Turns out they lied to my face I was, but luckily I made a big enough stink where they reversed it. And this was at a "reputable" Ford dealer, not some local used car place.
This is one of the reasons I love Tesla. Who the fuck wants someone pushing a sale on them? I know what I like, I know what I want. If I have a question, I just want an answer - not a half answer or spin to get a sale.
Man american dealships sound shitty
Man american dealships sound shitty
pretty much yeah. however most car salesmen seem to make their monthly paycheck based off commission, at least my dad did. so they will try anything to get you into a car, even if it's scummy.
Having sales people not humping your leg as soon as you walk through the door is a bad thing?
Sign me up for when Tesla opens up different branches of products, I will shop there.

As someone that has worked at an "reputable dealer", and my father who worked at ones from any of the "big three", salesman in general are pretty scummy. Not all are trying to make a quick buck, but it not surprising when you find one that does.
Glad to see the Auto-lobby promoting Tesla for once, even if it was unintentional.
I really want to hate on car dealerships but I do have to recognize their importance to the market when it was taking off. But hopefully Tesla starts a trend that allows manufacturers to start selling directly to customers.
So if I'm reading this right they're ranked last from the perspective of how car dealers think cars should be sold... which is to push the product and in general try and force a quick deal that might not be the best for the customer?
My guess is, that Tesla doesn't use a bonus or commission models for the sellers. Which means that they don't have to be pushy with customers and try to sell them as many "premium things" as possible. In essence a similar model like apple does in Apple stores.
