We've discussed this issue about having to "respect other peoples beliefs" many times in other threads here. It's not intolerance if someone explains to you why your reasoning process that leads you to believe god exists is flawed. Attacking religious people by saying "they're all dumb" would be intolerant, but the beliefs themselves are fair game to be criticized. If someone is sensitive to having their beliefs about god criticized, then I'm afraid that's just too bad. I'm sure holocaust deniers are sensitive to having their beliefs about history criticized, it doesn't change the fact that what they believe is completely and totally wrong and inconsistent with reality.
Well they do act like that quite often. But I heard theres this subreddit called "Intellectual Atheism" or some shit like that, haven't checked it out, but I hope people there are actually intelligent. Then again, it's reddit.
nobody here believes that holy shit. stop spewing bs about the south, you have no goddamn idea what you are talking about.
Way to overreact, buddy.
Because the people were from r/atheism on Reddit for what it's worth, r/christianity raised $15000
While there are certainly some good people there, r/atheism is such a circle-jerk, how did they get to be a goddamn default sub?
Because the owner of reddit has a "screw religion" mentality.
Why does a religion that says that anyone who doesn't believe like they do is going to burn in hell deserve anyone's respect? The religion tells me I'm going to be tortured for eternity if I don't buy into their mythology, why should I respect it?
Way to overreact, buddy.
i'm sorry it's not like everyone jumps at any chance to pick on the south and drags it into completely irrelevant shit. give it a rest.
It's funny, I've never PERSONALLY met a Christian who expressed hate towards atheists or people of other beliefs. On the other hand I've met a lot of atheists hating christians and other religious people.
Same, I think that Christians in European countries are a bit more chilled out and reasonable. v:v:v
It's funny, I've never PERSONALLY met a Christian who expressed hate towards atheists or people of other beliefs. On the other hand I've met a lot of atheists hating christians and other religious people.
Pretty much this. All of the hardcore Christians I know (about a dozen) are incredibly fun-loving people, very open-minded to everyone's opinions and beliefs, and believe in a coexisting Creationism/Evolution blend (IE God created the first beings, then set into motion natural selection to evolve into what we have today). Whereas at least 80% of the atheists I know (again, about a dozen) are militant antitheists, taking every opportunity they can to shoot down any and all religion (though targeting Christianity) and any and all who believe it, and whenever they find new antithiestic literature to spew, they're all too happy to jump on it and make sure everyone knows their disdain for it. It gets really fucking annoying.
you have to respect the people who actually believe in it.
Sure.
Because they're certain that their religion is right and that's why it's kind off an asshole move to say that everything they are believing in is wrong.
How is it an asshole move to show them why something is wrong? If someone believes the holocaust never happened, I'm sure you would agree that it's not an asshole move to show them why what they believe is wrong. Why should someone be selective in what fallacious reasoning they want to correct? We can tell one person their beliefs are wrong, but not another? Why would religion deserve a pass from criticism that we normally don't give to anything else?
How could atheists possibly be charitable when they don't believe in Christianity where our moral bedrock comes from? [editline]19th December 2011[/editline]
PFFFFFFFFFFHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA CHRISTIANIY HAHAHAHAHAHA

All my formal education took place in a Christian school and pretty much everyone was a fundie, teaching the kids they were going to hell if they didn't believe and that evolution was false. The atheists I know, myself included, knew it would be a bad idea to get on their bad side. Still, always best not to judge groups based only on personal experience. That goes both ways.
So I imagine these hardcore Christians also abstain from eating shellfish and wearing clothing of two different fabrics?
Oh wow it's something in the first testament that Christians don't do. They probably don't hate gays either! How can they call them selves Christians!?!?!
Why did they have to point out that an atheist did this?
Because it's often said that Atheists are uncharitable or less likely to give to charity.
Why did they have to point out that an atheist did this?
because atheists are cool
Oh wow it's something in the first testament that Christians don't do. They probably don't hate gays either! How can they call them selves Christians!?!?!
Actually plenty of hardcore Christians hate gays, including people that have risen to areas of significant influence in politics, atleast in America.
Actually plenty of hardcore Christians hate gays, including people that have risen to areas of significant influence in politics, atleast in America.
This is the reason my grandma does not know I am gay. Bitch goes to church everyday. Hardcore Catholic.
you went to Catholic School, what do you expect?
Not a Catholic School. After I had to move to Korea, the only international schools that my parents could afford to send me to were the Christian schools in the area. Before then, most of the actual teachings from the church I had to attend did the same thing. The main problem I have is that kids don't really have a choice in the matter and get all these ideas hammered into their heads from the beginning without being taught reason. Again, just a personal anecdote.

Is it bound money or freely availabe to DWB? Because a while ago I heard an interview where they said that they'd love if people didn't tie their money to a special project/catastrophe because they often don't know how to spend it over their lack of personal. They also said that one long term doctor, working 10 or more years with them is more welcome than 100k in money. Not exactly but something alike.
It's funny, I've never PERSONALLY met a Christian who expressed hate towards atheists or people of other beliefs. On the other hand I've met a lot of atheists hating christians and other religious people.
Sweden is quite progressive Personally, I've never met a Christian who didn't hold some form of contempt for people of a different religion/race/sexuality/something else, while only around 96% of atheists I know hold those kind of beliefs. Heh.
Eh, some of the lucky kids manage to escape the brain washing.
I'm offended that you would call the constant delivery of religious zealotry to children "brain washing". Be more tolerant please!!!
I don't think that you could prove anything to them anyway, they're completely sure about their beliefs and will probably not give them up just because someone says that they're wrong. But you're right that it's not that much of an asshole move, but I see it as telling a 4-year old that santa doesn't exist.
Well there are arguments like the problem of evil, that make a case that the existence of a benevolent god is not possible considering the world we live in.
Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is not omnipotent. Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent. Is he both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil? Is he neither able nor willing? Then why call him God? Epicurius
I also wouldn't compare it to Santa Clause and a 4 year old. You can convince a 4 year old to believe pretty much anything, and Santa Clause is just a harmless and fun myth for kids. I wouldn't compare it to adults believing that a man in a pointy hat with an ancient textbook can tell you exactly what happens when you die, and something bad will happen if you don't believe what they tell you. There is something really wrong and dangerous with people believing in that, here's an example:
My responsibility is to follow the Scriptures which call upon us to occupy the land until Jesus returns. We don't have to protect the environment, the Second Coming is at hand. James Watt, Secretary of the Interior for Ronald Reagan Quoted in the Washington Post, May 24, 1981

Sweden is quite progressive Personally, I've never met a Christian who didn't hold some form of contempt for people of a different religion/race/sexuality/something else, while only around 96% of atheists I know hold those kind of beliefs. Heh.
I know so many Christians who have a pretty impressive guise of tolerance (and actual, genuine love for their fellow human) and then go and blurt out something completely ridiculous that makes me see them in a whole new light, usually something about gays I also know plenty of nonreligious people who are buttheads. [editline]19th December 2011[/editline] none of this changes what's right
