And somehow the tunes played in Number Stations are still better than what we get on our local radio stations. :v:

I am completely confused what is this? If it's some sort of contest to fuck with the MI6 im down
ITT: People who think they are MI6 Spies and have absolutely no clue how anything government-wise works. (User was banned for this post ("ITT" - Orkel))
I'd love to take a risk and call these numbers but I don't have long distance calling, so I'll just watch you guys do it and see if you all mysteriously vanish
Betting now that this is just one big pissup by a bunch of very clever people and that MI6 isn't involved. Especially considering the fact that the Lincolnshire Poacher originated in Cyprus, not the UK, which kept it low-profile. Why would they move it to a UK number that one could easily get by bribing or interrogating a spy for, a number that can easily be ID'd AS a UK number?
Here's the person who wrote the articles on Reddit, he swears it isn't some sort of viral marketing campaign or hoax "to his knowledge," and he also says that this Mr. Bland person is an unhappy former SIS agent, it seems he has agreed to do an interview of sorts as well. I guess we just have to wait and see if this blows up into something big, or ends up being a huge letdown
I am completely confused what is this? If it's some sort of contest to fuck with the MI6 im down
Number Stations are a weird backtrace for spies from the Cold War. The numbers usually refer to some sort of condition and the songs and such are meant to give the all clear. We don't know why or what they're doing now.
They use one time pads though, they are (if done correctly) absolutely impossible to crack. The problem with a phone is that its a 1 to 1 connection, if you intercept it you know who the person (or at least the phone) that is calling it is. If you intercept a radio transmission you have no idea who the intended recipient is.
not almost impossible to crack actually impossible to crack
Perhaps the fact that you're calling a station used by MI6 Operatives to communicate mission information overseas?
If you go to Google you can find phone numbers that have been discovered to be associated with every intelligence agency in the world. Nobody's going to come knocking down your door in the middle of the night because you made a phone call. If anything contained in the transmission were sensitive it wouldn't be publicly available.
not almost impossible to crack actually impossible to crack
The caveat is important though, if its not implemented correctly it could be horribly insecure.
