Why the fuck do people complain about a potential humvee replacement as "tacticool" or "techno military fetish wankery"? Who gives a shit if it looks good or not, if it gets the job done, then by all means, use it.
I just don't think that you should have aesthetics in mind when designing a functional military vehicle
If it happens to look awesome after it's designed that's great, but when you actually design it specifically to look awesome then I see a problem
Edit: Hurpy durp I am stupid, disregard me.
It's not going to look anything like that when (if) it's completed.
Almost all modern US military equipment can still be functional in most ways when an EMP hits, it is not like the military has thought about it and went "lets just hope it works when EMP's hit."
Where does that say EMP?
He said EFP, which I believe stands for Explosively Formed Penetrator if I'm not mistaken
Reminds me of Hot Wheels, but in a good way. And a very good one at that.
So, can a civilian buy a un-armored version?
Speaking of which, I would fucking love to own the Marauder.
Looks pretty good, would've preferred an HMG on top though just for the sake of defense.
Unlike before, they can survive an IED, and that's a much bigger problem in Afghanistan than missiles.
They still can't survive the shaped copper penetrating IEDs they've started using.
[editline]30th December 2011[/editline]
Question is, what can truly withstand a hit from an EFP.
This is pretty much the case.
Looks pretty good, would've preferred an HMG on top though just for the sake of defense.
Joke, right?
Looks pretty good, would've preferred an HMG on top though just for the sake of defense.
Probably will have some sort of mounted weapon at some point
Probably will have some sort of mounted weapon at some point
The current humvee is optimized to allow for different setups. I don't see why this new one wouldn't.
Joke, right?
Why would that be a joke?

Oh I see. Nevemind
Joke, right?
Hopefully, it would be smarter to mount a 105mm recoilless rifle on top.
I wonder if they will put a CROWS system on it. Of course, the Army in all of its mysterious ways never gets shiny new equipment put on stuff we use, much less make it work. The M1A2 for example has some cool bells and whistles and double targeting and stuff, but only when it works.
It's not going to look anything like that when (if) it's completed.
they'll probably add the ability to mount guns on the top like the humvee
[editline]30th December 2011[/editline]
From that angle it kind of does look similar.
From the other ones, not so much.
that's not the same design
Where does that say EMP?

I read that wrong, excuse my stupidity.
it should have a giant knife sticking out of the top so it can joust enemy vehicles
it should have a giant knife sticking out of the top so it can joust enemy vehicles
I don't think it works that way.
it should have a giant knife sticking out of the top so it can joust enemy vehicles
Modern warfare.
Modern warfare.
Just glue a scope rail on the knife.
Yes, but you could drive a Jeep around in a World War II battlefield, but you'd never even consider driving one in Afghanistan.
The UK still operates Land Rover Defenders which are basically modern jeeps.

And the Jackal which is a bit of a step up

Im worried about this, if the army is looking for some "UBER SUPER FAST SLICK HIGH SPEED MODERN NEW FUTURISTIC JEEP" Then they're looking for the wrong type of vehicle, The army needs a vehicle that is built like a mack truck, can withstand gunfire and a rocket hit, and has good horsepower, which a vehicle like the humvee already has. Honestly i think this thing looks more like a fucking toy or sports car than a Sturdy and reliable military all purpose vehicle.

But they go about things differently compared to the US. It seems that the American way of doing things just would not suit unarmored open top vehicles.
So it runs on normal petrol, well that's retarded.
Considering the north pole being gone soon and all.

Are you or have you ever been a soldier in the Army? No? Then I am not sure that you know what you are really saying. This thing looks perfect for a personnel transport. Like some of the points I brought up earlier, this thing looks comfortable and armored. Soldiers don't get many comforts. If they managed to make a sleek looking armored vehicle that has the added bonus of being comfortable, then hey, I am all for that. I am also kind of excited about the 70% improvement on fuel. Do you know why the flag on our uniform is facing the other way? It is because we are always moving forward.
I remember reading an article about an advanced version of the current Humvee in a car magazine.
It had a "chimney pipe" in the middle, basically a hole from the bottom frame of the vehicle all the way to the roof. It's to prevent IED disasters and the like by forcing the explosive gasses into the chute, above the vehicle and safely protecting the soldiers inside.
But no, I guess a whole new design is in order. Like we can afford it
[editline]Ahh, here we go[/editline]

It is not the hipster military, not to mention, green tech is way too far behind to be seriously considered as a fuel for a fighting vehicle.

That's not true, biofuel blends have been increasing used in a range of high performance roles
[editline]30th December 2011[/editline]
Of course I wouldn't want barrels of unblended pure ethanol just sitting around motor pool
I really don't like the look of this, I don't know why, it just doesn't seem right.
I really don't like the look of this, I don't know why, it just doesn't seem right.
It looks like an up-armored composite of the recent Dodge police cruiser models (charger, challenger and the Durango to a lesser extent)
