the original didn't even have that thing in it
yeah I never saw it in it until today
You could program your VCR to start and stop recording at certain times, but you'd have to make sure the tape was rewound, the VCR/TV was on the right channel, and that you inputted the start and stop times correctly. And you couldn't watch something else while it was happening, so it was kind of a last resort if you had to leave somewhere to set it to record while you were gone. 2 shows you watch on at the same time? You were pretty much out of luck unless you had a 2nd TV and VCR, which most people probably didn't.
I might be wrong, but if you look in a TV book you'll notice a code next to each programme, I'm sure I remember you could put that code into your VCR and it would automatically record that programme (providing you were on that channel)

Probably later on and providing you had a fancy VCR that you could program that way. I don't think we ever did, not that I remember.
Ah yes; been a long time since I've operated a video player. I thought it was a matter of setting it to record then telling it to stop once it's finished, which I imagine is how one of the really early ones might've worked. I don't remember mine having that feature, but then again I don't remember my video-watching days all that well. Also I never had any "dirty tapes" around the house either, since it wasn't that kind of upbringing for a long time, until I discovered the true power of the internet and the bounty it held around age 12.
I'd take them. Who knows what could be there? I'd kill for the 5 hour version of Apocalypse Now...
I need to return some video tapes.

Fun fact, original (but cut) Jabba the Hutt:

Hutts as a species didn't even exist at the original time of writing.
Huh, I thought that guy was like one of Jabba's "people", like one of his cronies sent to negotiate. Guy gives off those vibes to me; he doesn't exactly look like some sinister crime-lord.

Probably why it was cut; a new hope was basically a complete mess before it was saved in editing
He should send all of them to Jason Scott for digitizing. There could always be a gem or two hidden in there.
Being the proud owner of a massive box of Voyager VHS tapes, this crime both sickens and disgusts me. I feel a pain in my soul at the mere sight of these images.
RIP in piece Voyager VHSes.
Also this takes me back, I had a shit ton of star trek tapes on VHS that filled up an entire wall, it was bloody brilliant. Of course now I can store all that entertainment in a little green boxset, or pack every episode of every series onto a hard drive. Or a microsd card.
High storage densities freak me the fuck out.

This! I had boxes and boxes of TNG and a box or two of voyager, and a little pile of DS9 which I really should have appreciated more.
Wow, with all those VHS Tapes, you could always sell them all to a store or something, or host a giant yard sale to get rid of them. I think I see a tape of Space 1999 in there (mostly unheard of TV Series by Gerry Anderson, definitely a worth-watching).
Who knows, there could be a porn tape, or even a tape of a now-rare movie or something. Just optimism speaking but you never really know.
But after that, there is now the million dollar question: Just who the hell dumped all those tapes?
I had one Voyager VHS with 2 episodes on it as a kid, I loved it as actually seeing an episode on TV was a rare treat unless you had a satellite dish, Voyager also happened to be one of the least often seen Star Treks for me too as it was still on air and thus not broadcast in Ireland, I wasn't old enough to appreciate DS9, so I watched the shit out of that VHS tape.

In the spirit of the thread, here's what TF2 looks in HD VHS:
Man, I remember when we used to tape things off the telly to watch later; that was a reel big thing back in the 90's, back before discs rose in popularity and affordability with the emergence of DVD. Nowadays you use your digibox to record what's on the telly, whereas back in the day there was all the faffing around with timings, since I don't think we had civilian mechanisms that could time when to start and stop the tape recording; TiVo's a digital hard-drive thing so it probably didn't work with tapes.
Well Panasonic had DVD-RAM which had time shifting, but it wasn't as good as a hard drive.

Wait, can't you just sell these if they're not damaged [it doesn't specify].

We still have a few VCRs. And I still use VHS for recording TV shows off our cable box. Granted, I have a TV tuner on my PC (which is also plugged into a VCR), but that doesn't help if I want to record something off NatGeo or BBC America, which only the cable box can get. So here I am, still programming our VCR and hoping nobody changes the channel in 2013.
First thing to come to mind when reading about this was the Atari ET cartridge burial.
I think I see a copy of Space Jam
i think everyone sees a copy of space jam, love. they're more common than dust nowadays.
infact I had to pull a copy of it out of my tea this morning.
Appears to have Star Trek: Voyager and Space 1999 amongst the piles.
Also, I feel kinda old for remembering when we used to watch video tapes. Always had to rewind them in the machine before you could watch them again, whereas nowadays rewinding is all digital and you don't have to faff around with resetting the magnetic tape reels if you wanna watch something from the start. And there was also that distinct grain effect on the older tapes.

Oh, and also it sucks to be the farmer, having all those old magnetic tapes on their land and still having to pay to have them removed. Still, if they're in good condition, I'd assume they'd be worth selling on eBay, since there's always a collector's market for these kinds of things. I should know, it's my job, though it's mostly books rather than VHS.
No one will buy them, people used to send them to charity shops but they stopped accepting them so they just get binned
