BBC asks: Why do Americans pay so much for broadband?
Yeah, I love seeing the download speed hit 7.7MB when downloading a steam game. I'm guessing you got doubled from 30Mb like I did? Really wish my upload was a bit more beefy.
I got tripled from 20Mb because that and the 30Mb must share lines/packages or something. I'm hoping they triple my upload too, it'd be handy as fuck for YouTube.
Another thing I like is the fact that they cache common downloads. I downloaded BF3 a while back and I was getting around 16MB/s because it was coming from Virgin instead of EA.
I live in Sweden and I pay around $65 for 100/100 mbit, but for around $150 I can get 1000mbit. Pretty sick for that price.
Time Warner Cable doesn't. Despite that it's still a shitty ISP.

[editline]idk[/editline]
Also, even though SK has extremely fast internet their government has tough restrictions placed onto it. You can barely get sites like YouTube to work unless you're using a VPN, which naturally slows down your speeds anyway.
Oh man, fuck TWC. They charge out the ass for my service but the only alternative is dsl.

This is what 70 dollars a month gets me. I really wish I had more options where I am.

$200 for a bundle that includes cable + phone + internet
Just because you can afford it doesn't mean you should waste it on extortionately-priced ISPs.
EDIT: Where in the feck did my merge go
I really don't think you got the point of what I said.

They have this thing called speedboost which gives you a higher download speed for the first 10 seconds of any download. It is for duping speedtests and making webpages load quickly. We pay around $70 a month for 25mbps. We have a cap, i'm not sure what it is but they clearly do not charge us for going over it. 3 people with almost constant heavy internet usage. My grandfather is a psychopath so everything is locked down tight, I have no way of seeing how much we've used.
Comcast has had a 250GB data limit on their internet services, but last I checked they weren't enforcing it. I haven't checked recently, though. With 4 users in the home - two of which rely heavily on streaming services (Pandora, Netflix, etc), as well as Steam downloads by yours truly, we got pretty damn close to the limit more than a few times a year.
Back when they first introduced it to our neighborhood my family always went past the threshold. We ended up getting a small business class line instead because those have no caps at all. The extra speed was useful but for the price they charge us (about $80 a month) is ridiculous. Fuck Comcast and just about every ISP in the U.S.
Have to pay nearly 50 dollars for 6.0 Megs with AT&T. It's fast, but it's not worth the money, hate paying so much for it.
Lack of competition is the main reason. Only one isp covers where i live and they're charging me 60 bucks a month for a 20mbps dl and 500kbps ul connection. They do have the infrastructure for 100mbps connection in my area (160 bucks).
I have called them to complain a few times and they're like 'you can always cancel your plan if you're unhappy :smug:'.
I'm surprised at Estonia?
I thought Broadband in Estonia was excellent, what with it being the home of Skype and everyone owning a personal website or something?
Well if you live in a apartment, you will modt likely have fiber optic speeds. But since there are more houses than apartments in Estonia, then that takes the total speed down. Plus the fact that some people are living in the country side and must use Mobile Internet. There is a project called EstWin that will provide at least 100mbit to "every citizen", but the deadline for that is 2015. Also everyone doesn't have a personal website, but a E-mail service thing or States portal, where the government sends important information to you and you can do other things there.
Do you have Virgin's fiber optic?

idk probably they just sent us a letter giving us a deal for this
short answer: because we can afford it.
Plenty of countries who are just as wealthy if not more sometimes have better internet for a lower price.
Plenty of countries who are just as wealthy if not more sometimes have better internet for a lower price.
Are comcast and time-warner and AT&T the providers there? No? then they don't compare.
My point was that if we could afford $20 a more a month and still pay it for internet, guess what the price would be.
Still don't get my point? Check healthcare costs for those same nations.

Holy shit, I thought Telstra was bad.
Holy shit, I thought Telstra was bad.
That is Telstra, they're the only ones in my estate that own all the wiring + the exchange, other isps like TPG and iiNet don't like our area so we have to go with Telstra
Oh that's weird I thought I had a different usage interface than that. (I could swear it was Optus). I wish I had TPG too.
How much are your mens haircuts in the US then? I pay £7.50 for a haircut.
My goodness. I payed less than that for an electric razor set some years ago, and now I have free buzzcuts for life.
100 mbit up/down (no cap), satellite TV with two receivers and landline for the staggering price of $15.
Woo-hoo, Bulgaria.
Oh that's weird I thought I had a different usage interface than that. (I could swear it was Optus). I wish I had TPG too.
Telstra updated their interface they're moving away from bigpond
I'm lucky to get 140 Kb/s down. My teacher was trying to load a Youtube video (unsuccessfully) and was like "Silicon valley MY ASS!!"
America answers: We don't have a choice. Telecoms have been a 'legal' monopoly for sixty years or more, and those same telecoms are who provide internet service over here. So we literally do not have a choice in ISP, which lets those ISPs charge whatever the fuck they want to.

Just so everyone is aware, this is the point when I said "short answer: because we can afford it"

Woo fuck my life.
On top of that I only get 20 gigs a month or they slow it down to a ridiculously low speed akin to dial-up, and I only have access to half of that between the hours of 2AM and 8AM.
I am a bit surprised none on FP has started their own company, if it is as easy and cheap as people say, and made a huge profit by providing a cheaper and uncapped internet to people.
I am a bit surprised none on FP has started their own company, if it is as easy and cheap as people say, and made a huge profit by providing a cheaper and uncapped internet to people.
Because consumers don't really care?
If I move just a few miles north I can get full 1Gb/s (full-duplex) for about $65/mo, it's pretty good for them - the ISP in specific https://xmission.com/utopia
The only downside is you have to pay to get the fibop line installed (Which is like a $2,000 fee); but past that you can get a shitton of speed, and no caps. This is also that company I've talked about before that actually does transparency reports for FISA requests.
This has been around for a few years; and so few people knew about it who actually live in the areas they service, it blows my mind.
I am a bit surprised none on FP has started their own company, if it is as easy and cheap as people say, and made a huge profit by providing a cheaper and uncapped internet to people.
really you're surprised that no one on a medium sized forum has decided to start up that specific small business
As shitty as Australian internet is, at least we have variety.
In my area, you can get Telstra (Most used), Optus (Not really used anymore, used to be OK but everyone I know who uses it says it's shit), iiNet (One of the better ones), TPG (good value) and Dodo (cheap but shitty).
