BBC asks: Why do Americans pay so much for broadband?

Time Warner. Almost $200, but that's because our cable service is bundled (ugh) with it. Still asinine.
I see commercials for their "high speed internet" on TV, "Starting at $70 something"
Starting AT? As just the BASIC service? Jesus Christ!
And for what, sub-par download speeds and absolutely abysmal upload speeds?
Something's gotta change.
As shitty as Australian internet is, at least we have variety.
In my area, you can get Telstra (Most used), Optus (Not really used anymore, used to be OK but everyone I know who uses it says it's shit), iiNet (One of the better ones), TPG (good value) and Dodo (cheap but shitty).

This is the best site for Austraian internet related things: http://whirlpool.net.au/
NEVER go with Dodo for the love of christ, I've spoken to people with their experiences on it because unlimited internet with it being "not throttled" at a reasonable price seems too good to be true, and with Dodo it is, people say they've been capped hard and it drops out constantly.
iiNet and TPG are fucking awesome, the real problem with Australian internet is Telstra dominance, if your area is Telstra dominated (Exchange + Wiring), you are going to get the best with Telstra and they have expensive deals.
I know a friend on TPG's$60 a month for Naked ADSL2+ Unlimited, and he gets amazing download rates and never has to worry about it being throttled and the bandwidth is amazing. And iiNet fights for Consumer rights and a free web, they have amazing deals as well, if I can recall during the whole filtering saga the government had, iiNet refused to carry test on their network and told them they'd never support internet filtering.
In Finland we have this thing called free internet.

Woo fuck my life.
On top of that I only get 20 gigs a month or they slow it down to a ridiculously low speed akin to dial-up, and I only have access to half of that between the hours of 2AM and 8AM.
what the fuck is that latency holy shit
South africa is much more expensive for much slower speeds :/ I mean just for a 10mb, you are paying around US$100/month :/
If you EVER go to NY (State), neeeevvveer get NY Airnet. I'm not even getting a 20th of the speed my family pays for.
(Wooo. 56kbs is what I get. It's not dial-up either...)
(Also, did I mention besides the really really bad dial-connection (Hasn't been serviced in over 9+ ish years so it's horrible. Even for phone calls.) this is the only connection I get? Even more amazing, none of my neighbors even have internet besides stuff like Verizon hotspot. 3 medium sized towns to the east west and south of me and a somewhat major city to the north. The east-ward town is less than 3 miles out.)

Even the ads they have are shit:

If they put Australia on there the blue would be off the chart and the yellow line would be going backwards.

this was from 2003...
Gotta admit that Telstra has a fair bit of creativity with their ads
It also helps when South Korea is smaller then the state of Ohio.
But yeah, the main reason is the terrible infrastructure because of how massive the United States actually is.
Isolation has nothing to do with it. I had 2mb/s download speeds on a remote island in the Finnish archipelago on one of those shitty usb routers. It's the same stupid argument people use when talking about healthcare, 'oh the US isn't homogenous so nothing can ever work'. Oh so social services and care for the elderly just appeared out of nowhere?
I've never lived in an area that has had access to fibre or cable so my experience of broadband in the UK is pretty terrible. Having said that I've never paid more than £6.50 a month (plus ~£11 line rental)
100 mbit up/down (no cap), satellite TV with two receivers and landline for the staggering price of $15.
Woo-hoo, Bulgaria.
Not fair, I have to pay $5 more for the same thing :(

Satellite internet. That's actually considered fast relatively speaking. Normally you have 1+ second ping.
Sort of your only option if you want broadband in rural areas. Or stick with dial-up.
