The north are a dictatorship brainwashing their civilian population and threatening a neighbouring nation.
Sound familiar?
perhaps but they've also got the fourth largest army in the world
That won't mean shit when we're striking the crap out of their cities with Predator drones, bombing the crap out of them with our F-22s, or when we're rolling over them with our M-1 Abram tanks and Bradleys.
I looked up "fight or flight" in the dictionary and they had a picture of North Korea.
Shits about to get real.
Yeah, just like the other 700 times "shit got real" ... Oh wait :colbert:
Peace never works. The only way this will be solved is through war. Unless the successor to Kim Jong Il has half a brain, but I doubt it.
It's funny cause you think it'll be easy
It may not be the easiest thing, but we all know who will win. If the entire world is against you, it makes no difference who you are, you will lose.
I wouldn't say a war would be easy... But looking at the original Korean War, it only got tough after China joined in.
bring it on

Right, how dare the world torpedo a North Korean vessel. Wait, North Korea did that as an act of revenge for a previous act of aggression they lost.
And no, America is involved because the only nation opposed to the war that wielded veto powers (USSR) walked out of the UN discussion on how to handle North Korean aggression (because North Korea launched an unprovoked war against South Korea). In order to maintain the UN mandated ceasfire, the Americans stationed their troops there.

Am I the only one who doesn't see the point in North Korea's aggression? Perhaps the marking on the torpedo could have been fabricated by another aggressor.
Conspiracy.

Right. And I suppose the commando raid to assasinate South Koreas president, the frequent, repeated attempts to tunnel under the DMV (with tunnels large enough to move entire divisions through every hour), the multiple naval battles with clearly marked North Korean vessels, and the occasional North Korean border raid are also fabrications.
Christ.

This.
People seem to forget the shit the North is capable of.
I wouldn't be surprised if they actually have subterranean complexes big enough to save their entire population from nuclear war.

It means something for South Korea. And that something is getting royally fucked up.
If you've got a huge army but their shit it will just mean more blood.

Yes, there will be a ton of blood, on both sides. The poster below is correct in saying that it will be a war of attrition. Think Imperial Japan, but far worse. There is no doubt in my mind that the (I imagine) fanatically loyal NK army will fight to the last man.
And again, in ANY case, SK is fucked. I simply cannot imagine the rest of the world coming to their aid fast enough to prevent them getting reamed up the asshole.

Yes it will. The US has proven that it can't handle massive insurgencies in an unfamiliar country, and I have no doubt that NK would be fully aware of its technological disadvantage and would use whatever sneaky guerrilla tactics they could. A military-standard standing army using hit-and-run and related tactics could seriously fuck some shit up, even for your oh-so-amazing big-dick military.
And don't even mention nukes because it's highly unlikely that the west will bring its nuclear arsenal to bear on NK. Nukes are for dick-waving and little else.

The US still hasn't won the war in Iraq. This would be like that, but versus an actual (huge) military, with actual hardware to support the troops. "It may not be the easiest thing" is a massive understatement. If this war comes to pass, it will almost certainly be a long, drawn-out, bloody, horrific conflict for both sides.
You could might as well make a generic document of NK promising to retaliate against any group calling it out. They never do anything about it.
Yup, we'll bomb all our problems rather than actually solving them. Yup, that's a great idea.
Instantly my ass. It took months for a Coalition forces, especially US units to be deployed to the Middle East. Try deploying two corps' worth of forces plus a few more bits in a contingency operation, it's not easy nor quick.
Iraq was never prepared against the US military. Current potential conventional US adversaries on the other hand have had a chance to analyze past US military operations and point out their weaknesses. If US military planners in the future fought against a conventional force with your views, they'd probably end up creating a Rocroi.
Aye, the war on terror isn't really a war anymore so much as a hunt. Some of the soldiers fighting in this hunt haven't really experienced the full power of real war, having spent their service out in a dusty desert land, occassionaly encountering guerilla forces. It'd be a massive change for them if they were relocated to fight in the concrete jungles of North Korea, against a large professionally-trained army. It'd be akin to the wars their fathers and grandfathers used to fight, like Vietnam and the like.
I only hope it's over quicker than the guerilla hunting in the Middle East.
Oh fucking wow...
Heard of Fallujah?
Yeah go tell the guys who fought house to house that they haven't experienced the power of a real war.
Even in A-stan, where the war on terror takes place, Korengal Valley is ridiculously dangerous, infantry squads were getting into drawn out firefights almost daily.

street fighting with under-equipped guerrillas isn't even close to a real war.
[editline]08:54PM[/editline]
especially when those insurgents belong to no wealthy state
Oh right, I forgot about Fallujah. Stupid me. Our troops are indeed more than capable of urban combat...
But still, the guerilla warfare part's true at least. It's been quite some time since we've been at war with an army on a near-equal scale and sophistication as our own.

Although there is no official end of the war, there have been no open hostilities. After the cease fire, South Korea and the US have been pumping hundreds of thousands of tons of food into the North, while the North and the South jointly constructed buildings on the DMZ that would allow for talks of reunification. For all intents and purposes, the war has been over.
For all intents and purposes, the war has been over.
not really though
[editline]07:52PM[/editline]

Listen to this man, he's a scientist.
I agree with all of your points. However, I'd like to quote you:
"Think Imperial Japan, but far worse.
You also said that their army would be loyal to the last man. Unlike the UK or US, they have forced military service, AKA conscription. There's no guarantee they would be loyal to the last-they would be half as likely to desert in the middle of the fight.

Someone has been playing far too much CoD:MW 2.
What many of you fail to understand is that in the event that there IS a war, SK will likely be taking it up the pooper without any lube. The forces stationed there won't be enough to repel NKs attacking force, and once reinforcements arrived, not only will SK have taken alot of damage, NK will retreat back to it's borders, where they have the advantage.
Let's look at what NK has going for it in the event of an attack on it:
1. Their military force is very large.
2. They won't desert on their own ground-they have nowhere to go, and if they are caught, they'll more likely than not be executed.
3. The idiotic policies Obama is putting into place will add on to the problems our troops would have with the unfamiliar terrain.
4. The forces of NK will be using plenty of guerilla warface to cause hell for our troops, tactics they'll be unfamiliar with.
Let's look at what NK has against it:
1. People on facepunch are giving it mean stares.
2. Everyone hates it.
