It's exactly things like abortion, gay acceptance and public healthcare that would make the current US society into a modern society, a civilized people and a country with good living standards.
There's always racism, but people of one race can go together, as they know they are of the same race, they will alywas have "their people". Gays can't identify eachother, they don't flock together into gangs, companies, industries or such.
Gays are stranded, they aren't born in a gay society, they are stranded among straight people.
