Don't you people disagree with this man. The average voter lives in rational ignorance. Because the transaction cost to be aware of the issues present is so high, very few people that vote actually "know" about the person that they're voting for. The rest of the crowd is swayed by shiny campaign propaganda and the promise of the politician to support short term polices for special interest groups to gain political ground (even of said polices aren't viable in the long run).
I'm going to be turning 18 next month and I look forward to putting my well informed vote even though I do not believe in the effectiveness of our modern democracy. I do not need incentives or beliefs to do acts of self sacrifice in the name of good principal.
I wish the criteria to be eligible for voter registration was based on IQ instead of an age gate. It's like a sheep herder who lets both the strong and sickly sheep to graze in his pasture, instead of choosing only the fittest regardless of age.

You try too hard.

Trying "too hard" gets you places you never thought imaginable.

I can mostly agree. The same thing happens in the US.
If you don't know what you're voting for, do everyone a favor and don't vote.
[editline]10:55PM[/editline]
Another problem is that there are only ever 2 candidates with any shot at winning, and they're both shit heads.

Turd sandwich for '12! :D
You're right, it is sad that we have to decided between two colors of the opposite spectrum. Is limited choice really freedom?
He should be recruited by the British government as an espionage expert.

THAT 14 year old might, but in general 14 year olds don't.

well in general most people above the age of 18 are not knowledgeable enough to make an educated vote.
He'd probably just heard incredibly biased stuff from his parents. All my family are Tories and none of us would even think of dressing anything like that.
Everyone should have to take a test which consists of multiple essays, before being allowed to vote. The test should simply be a method of ensuring that those who are allowed to vote, understand what they are voting for and why.
Age should not affect whether or not you can vote, if you possess citizenship, your vote should count, so long as you pass the political understanding test.
This thread seemed not too terrible at first. But then the supremists showed up all like "enslave the dumb and voting for the intellectuals (elite)". People who want to ban stupid people from voting actually want an intellectualy based oligarchy.

In my case, I simply wish for all votes to be the result of an informed decision rather than the result of misconceptions or minsunderstanding. I don't care who votes, so long as they understand why.
I can't speak for others.
That Tory is a spy!
I would like to shake that man's hand.
I say man, because that is quite the feat. Respek.
I read the first part of the title as "Police to spank teen, 14"
:colbert:
Pretty cool kid.

Good for you.
I like how loads of people think the Tory's are going to be better than Labour.

So you'd deny people their rights in a democracy simply because they can't write an essay on the current political system?
I honestly can't tell you how much of a dumb idea that is.
Heh, maybe that kid's vote makes up for the thousands who weren't able to vote (which is horrifying and scandalous)

Overheard at a bus stop:
Old Lady One: So who are you voting for then?
Old Lady Two: Labour.
Old Lady One: Labour? But you said that they've been the worst Government we ever had!
Old Lady Two: I've always voted Labour.
Old Lady One: But why are you voting for Labour?
Old Lady Two: My Ma and Pa voted Labour their whole lives.
Old Lady One: Why don't you vote for UKIP?
Old Lady One: I'm voting Labour. I've always voted Labour, so I'm not going to change now.
This is the problem with people voting at the moment - they see political parties like football teams.
Sounds like a douche.

Yes, yes I would. A vote made with little knowledge as to why they're voting for who they're voting for is simply a bad vote, regardless of who it's for. It should be like the ability to drive, you're welcome to it so long as you're qualified and understand how to drive.
Anyway, it wouldn't be like if they failed the test, they instantly lost their vote forever, they'd be able to take the test as many times as they wanted, when they show an adequate level of understanding, they pass and can then vote.
I honestly don't know why you'd be okay with letting EVERYONE vote, even if a large number of people eligible to vote didn't understand what each party represented. Votes by these kind of people don't represent what the people want, all they represent is what party people are most likely to vote for when they lack an adequate amount of knowledge to make an informed decision.
The manifestos that are released by each party aren't enough to make an informed vote with, a full understanding of each party must be acquired. If you ask a random person on the street who they're voting for and why, you're likely to end up with some boneheaded answer like, "I'mma vote for labour because them tories are only looking out for the fat cats and not the working man." I've noticed many people make their decision based on blatant misconceptions or similar fallacious notions. Why would you want votes like this?

I agree, to a degree.
Teacher is a twat.
I suggest we all have a suffragette type campaign to lower the voting age to 17.
All the suffragettes did was hinder the campaign.

"Yeah lol, fuck the people, only the intellectual elite should be able to vote! If ur IQ is higher than 130, then you get to vote! Eazy! Andalso, lets instal some kinda standardized essay format that you have to know, so that there'll be even more in the way of voterz!"
Fuck you, asshole. The last thing we need is Prussian school mentalities invading our very methods of election. The IQ test is a sham and a farce, and were limits to be put into practice, you would be effectively discounting entire swaths of people, not just with mental disabilities, but likely with mental differentiations (such as asperger's).
Now, we all must understand that your vote seriously doesn't matter either way. Your informed opinion is just as easily manufactured by the media as someone else's opinion that was based off of a nice campaign ad. The only true result of elections is the feeling of the majority that it has some kind of influence. So by taking the right to vote from the masses, you basically set the grounds for further unrest and insurrection. That's not wise either, unless you're an instigator saboteur, attempting to make your revolutionary forces look better.

Just seems to me that you read my first post, without reading the other posts, then jumped to a conclusion that would make you seem the most edgy.
Don't do that.
Awesome kid.
