If you have access to the doom.wad and doom2.wad files (if you have the doom games on steam you have these files in their respective directories), go check out Zandronum.
This is a new engine for Doom with dynamic lighting, extra features, 1920x1080 capability, modern sound, mouse, and keyboard support, etc... You can also play it multiplayer with the Doomseeker server browser which will automatically download any mods the server may be running. If you are going to replay Doom or you want to check out some of the amazing mods (Delta Invasion will blow your mind: you've never fought this many monsters on screen before, trust me), Zandronum is the way to do it.
Link to some guides here. If you need specific help try the Zandronum help forum, they're pretty good guys.
Good mods to try if you want to do something different:
1) Real Guns Advanced - basically Call of Duty guns and perks inside Doom. Great for deathmatch or co-op, makes co-op a LOT harder
2) Shotgun Invasion - players work as a team to stop waves of aliens from crushing their base. A commander plays in RTS fashion and buys upgrades/buildings for the team. Eventually games lead to players wielding crazy upgraded plasma guns and mechs vs. cyber demons and other shit. It's intense.
3) Brutal Doom - this is what Doom should have been. Seriously. Easily my favourite Doom mod ever. Weapons tear enemies apart, Berzerk packs are actually terrifying, causing marines to smash enemies to pieces and execute aliens in horrific (and awesome) ways, blood and guts everywhere... at least watch a video of this. It's amazing.
for sp, get gzdoom
for sp, get gzdoom
Or Zdoom if you are playing in a notebook that can't run OpenGL well. Lastly there is Chocolate Doom for the a true classic experience.
doomsday 1.8.6 does a damn good job
its got ultimate, doom2, final doom and heretic + hexen
Games like Doom and Quake have aged really well over these past two decades. They're really fun to play on single player or multiplayer, even to this day.

I play it at school with a DOS Emulator, all on my little laptop

zandrodoom is just a more advanced version of gzdoom
Guys. Don't download or support Brutal Doom. The creator of that mod is a Neo Nazi, like. seriously a neonazi. He also tells depressed and suicidal people how to kill themselves. Like, instructions.
He is an all around HUGE asshole. Also in my respects the mod ruins aspects of doom, makes you too powerful, and pussifies many of the demons.
Also he's been banned on several doom forums, one of which I think was the official Zandronum forums.
EDIT: The thread where he was telling some guy to kill themselves, seriously. Sergeant_Mark_IV is him. http://forum.zdoom.org/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=37411
http://zandronum.com/forum/showthread.php?tid=3484 The thread where he got banned from Zandronum due to him being a huge asshole.
If you want to celebrate doom, do it with some good megawads or the original game. Not a mediocre mod made by a fucked up neo nazi.
To those who rated this post "funny" or "dumb", You should probably reevaluate your views, as it's a pretty serious subject to be very seriously telling someone to kill themselves.

brb downloading Brutal Doom
Avoid the steam version of it, it's a terrible port.
I already have them for PC, I was going to get it for PS3.
zandrodoom is just a more advanced version of gzdoom
Zandronum is based in a very old version of GZDoom meaning some mods requires GZDoom to be played due the lack of code and certain updates that Zandronum doesn't have.

Or you could say brutal Doom miss all the idea of the original and jumps the shark (in a good way)
But no! Let me tell you how much of a mean guy he is.

no its not, other way around.
zandronum is on an outdated gzdoom, so some wads wont work on zandronum

No you are wrong
Edit: Or mabe you aren't, i'm not sure now
you seem like a person who knows a lot about doom, and i only based my opinion on my personal experience
when I tried GZDoom once it wasn't very stabile on my PC, while Zandrodoom works just fine - it might be just my computer
on the other hand, I am aware that some mods doesn't support Zandrodoom
i'm trying to find some info about it online, but my internet is kind of slow today. Can you tell me what other problems apart form mod incompatibility Zandrodoom have over GZDoom?
No you are wrong
I don't know anything about zandronum or gzdoom, but on matters of Doom, I'm more inclined to trust the guy with a Doom space marine for his avatar and has a title that is a quote from the game.

zandronum is much more mp based than sp based, and GZdoom has more advanced scripting features and more advanced graphical options. i dare say theres more but i cant think of any

These were the main reasons why i thought he may be right
Zandronum is ZDoom 2.3.1 with better multiplayer code and an OpenGL renderer (based on GZDoom but not the same)
GZDoom has the most current version of OpenGL.

Thank you, that was the anwer I wanted to hear. So I guess both have their pros and cons, and arguing which one is better is pointless.

I have a singular doom folder with over 12 gigs of levels and other wads, and I also have several source ports for specific things.
For instance, if I ever want to play Doom how it originally was back in the 90s, but with proper mouse and keyboard support I play Odamex or Chocolate Doom.
I play Zandronum for MP and or gameplay wads that only work with zandronum, and I use GZDoom for most single player stuff and Brutal Doom.
GZDoom is better if you want enhanced singleplayer and modding (Chocolate Doom for pure vanilla), Zandronum is better for multiplayer
GZDoom is better if you want enhanced singleplayer (or Chocolate Doom for pure vanilla), Zandronum is better for multiplayer
That's what I just said..
Also I find Odamex better than Chocolate Doom. It's almost the same thing except Odamex still lets you go 1080p and use wads that break the original map limits, but it still has that "feel" of vanilla doom. The movement is just slightly different and the AI behaves differently, also the animations aren't so smooth.
That's what I just said.
Your post wasn't there when I submitted, that's why

I don't get it, how is saying "Don't buy or support Fez, Phil Fish is a dick." okay, but "Don't download or support Brutal Doom, Sergeant Mark IV is a dick." dumb?
No, it's not. You really don't see the difference between criticism and bashing. I am yet to see a list that points out all these "bad design decisions" that everyone loves to talk about, and also suggest ways how to solve them. But why have I never seen this list anywhere? Because it doesn't exists! Nobody really wants to point out problems and help me to solve them. These people only wants to see me and my mods out of Doom community. All the critics of Brutal Doom says is "Brutal Doom is bad because I don't like it, because it ruins the gameplay of the shitty slaughtermaps that I love so much, Sergeant Mark IV is a nazi that told a kid to kill himself (a kid that is 18 years-old), anyone who plays Brutal Doom must be a 12 year old that never played Doom before, you shouldn't play it, dont play it! I TOLD YOU TO DONT PLAY IT! BRUTAL DOOM IS CALL OF DOOTY! PLAY "X MOD" INSTEAD! I am right, you are wrong, end of story.".
Honestly this sounds very jelly to me.
This is no better than Fish.
Another poster from the same thread:
Holy shit, you're so fucking stupid. How many times do you have to be told that none of brutal doom's critics are, have ever been, or will ever be jealous, of you, your mod, or your mod's success. Do you need to be told why? Okay.
Let's start with you. You're the biggest internet douchebag I could name off the top of my head. You're rude to your fans. You don't thank the people that contributed 90% of your mod's content. You barely even credit them, only listing their names and then hiding it on a second F1 screen where nobody would think to look. You tell people to kill themselves, provide instructions on how to do so, and then proceed to throw in a Holocaust joke, because you weren't being enough of an asshole already. You leave racist comments in your mod. When called on your shit, you backtrack at the speed of light and claim that "IT'S JUST A JOKE, YOU JUST DON'T GET MY INCREDIBLY WITTY HUMOR", every single time. You couldn't even make an honest apology for your fuck-up and got banned from Zandronum's forums for it. You somehow managed to avoid getting banned from here, even though this was Ground Zero for the whole shitfest. I cannot think of a single reason someone would be jealous of you. Pity, perhaps, but not jealousy.
...
One last subject I want to touch upon, and another thing you love to spout about, and that's what Brutal Doom has allegedly done for the community. What do you claim that it's done? It brought tons of new players to Doom - while this is true, I suspect it was the aforementioned Kotaku and PC Gamer articles that had to do with this more so than the mod itself. Furthermore, while this is not always the case, many of these new players just play Brutal Doom and nothing else, and go around complaining that mapsets are impossible due to BD's changes, or that a mod doesn't work because they're trying to load it with Brutal Doom. Not the finest addition to the Doom community. You also claim that it's brought a lot of new modders to the scene. Again, true, but the mods they make are just for Brutal Doom and oftentimes pretty bad. This playerbase is evidently not worth your respect, seeing as you've lashed out at them in the past. The rest of the Doom community doesn't exactly look highly upon them, either. So, what has Brutal Doom really done for the Doom community? It's brought in a ton of kids whose first and only experience with Doom is Brutal Doom, it's caused a ridiculous divide among the players, and it's generally brought nothing but hostility and bad times for everyone involved. When even you want little to do with your playerbase, I highly doubt anyone's going to be jealous of that. I'm certainly not.
Now, if you would so kindly never use this awful strawman ever again, that would be lovely. Have a nice day.
If you guys want to do multiplayer with friends, I'd say try Odamex instead of Zandronum, when it comes to netcode, Odamex is far superior.

Wow, Sergeant Mark IV is more of a dick than I thought. Though it does seem like some people are dicks towards him as well.
Still even despite him being a major dickhead I still have enjoyment from his mod, though I can understand perfectly why a lot of people dislike it and there are mods out there that are much better. Nor am I one of those people who think Doom should have been Brutal Doom from the beginning.
Vanilla Doom is amazing and it saddens me that people will just brush it aside for Brutal Doom.
I will admit that Brutal Doom can be a good bit of fun, and the less said about the creator the better, but it kinda irks me when someone says it's "the way it's meant to be played" or "the only real way to play it".
I've had plenty of fun with just regular Doom. People can play it how they want. There is no one true way to play it.

It was worse when many people wanted a "Brutal Doom" compatible version of every other mod.
NeXTDoom would be awesome if it wasn't 6fps and had no sound.
Here everyone, have a video of John Romero documenting the entire first episode of Doom:
