It's surreal how timeless Doom is, 20 years worth of knock-offs and improvements but it still stands tall as the very embodiment of the FPS genre! [editline]11th December[/editline] Also, I'd like to recommend Russian Overkill, Reelism and Project MSX along with WildWeasel's mods.
Christ, video games really have come a long way in 20 years! I wonder what things will look like 20 years from now... Woah.
Graphics aren't making the jumps they used to, and even so we're so close to realism we're seeing developers deciding to stylize their games to stand out rather than shoot for pure realism, which makes them more unique and interesting. Also Minecraft's success has shifted focus from graphics to expansiveness, that's what's winning game audiences these days
Reelism
Seconding this one. It's bloody hilarious. I too became 20 years old earlier this year. It feels nice to have the same age as one of my favourite videogames of all time, in a nerdy kinda way. Doom is truly immortal, man.
I share birthday with Doom, two years after it came but yeh, dunno if that's a good sign or not :v:
I was born the day after DOOM 2 came out in Europe.
ftfy
No, I said Doom 4 because it's the 20th anniversary for DOOM, not Quake. Although I'd love to see another Quake, Doom 4 has been rumored since forever, so I think it's about time we get some official word on it sometime soon.

Ah, one of the very first games I ever played, it's 20 years old already? I feel old. Though it wasn't as scary as the fucker that dominated the very first game I ever played...
1) Real Guns Advanced - basically Call of Duty guns and perks inside Doom. Great for deathmatch or co-op, makes co-op a LOT harder 2) Shotgun Invasion - players work as a team to stop waves of aliens from crushing their base. A commander plays in RTS fashion and buys upgrades/buildings for the team. Eventually games lead to players wielding crazy upgraded plasma guns and mechs vs. cyber demons and other shit. It's intense. 3) Brutal Doom - this is what Doom should have been. Seriously. Easily my favourite Doom mod ever. Weapons tear enemies apart, Berzerk packs are actually terrifying, causing marines to smash enemies to pieces and execute aliens in horrific (and awesome) ways, blood and guts everywhere... at least watch a video of this. It's amazing.
Remember, try vanilla before you add sprinkles. You won't enjoy the vanilla without the sprinkles if you do that. [editline]11th December 2013[/editline] Also, if you want a challenging set of maps - Alien Vendetta I and II is the way to go. It doesn't add anything but maps that are really gruesome. Avoid All Out War II.
I'm still making mods for this awesome game (It's a Super Mario 64-Doom Hybrid, shooter gameplay with collect-a-thon gameplay)

I just happen to have recently started playing a bunch of doom. Just finished plutonia experiment and now I'm playing plutonia 2. Happy birthday doom, soon you'll be 30.
If you hate your PC, nuts.wad is the way to make it commit sudoku
i get 3 fps on nuts.wad now its actually kind of playable kind of who needs crysis?
Well, tbh I don't realy know why is he worse than phil Fish. I mean, I met a lot of people in my life who were much more rude, and if I had to count every holocaust joke that I heard from my friends...
how much did the holla cost? :v:
One wonders if we will look back at the games of today in the same way we look back at Doom today.
I doubt that we're gonna miss the current generations linear, health-regen, cutscene filled modern military shooters.
I doubt that we're gonna miss the current generations linear, health-regen, cutscene filled modern military shooters.
I meant mostly in terms of graphical fidelity.
Hopefully they come out with Ultimate Ultimate Doom eventually.
I doubt that we're gonna miss the current generations linear, health-regen, cutscene filled modern military shooters.
CoD4 is pretty good. It's a shame it's being lumped with it's sequels and will be forgotten.
CoD4 is pretty good. It's a shame it's being lumped with it's sequels and will be forgotten.
tbh World at War was the last good CoD, before things turned to shit.
tbh World at War was the last good CoD, before things turned to shit.
Black Ops was also a really good CoD game, and while I've not played it enough to judge - a lot of people say BO2 was also good :v:
Black Ops was also a really good CoD game, and while I've not played it enough to judge - a lot of people say BO2 was also good :v:
Well Treyarch makes good CoD games. Except CoD3. That one was kinda lackluster. And everything Infinity Ward touched after CoD4 turned to shit.
If you hate your PC, nuts.wad is the way to make it commit sudoku
And you haven't truly experienced DooM if you haven't played wow.wad
Holy shit this thread is monumental, we have people agreeing that some of the CoDs are good!
Finally my username is relevant. [editline]e[/editline] Happy belated birthday Doom!
One wonders if we will look back at the games of today in the same way we look back at Doom today.
Pretty sure in 40 years we're going to be still looking back at doom and the 2000's type of fps will be only a distant memory, like pogs.
