• World Cup hosts Qatar sets dress code for tourists

Basically that was the standard dress code in whole civilized world like 50-60 years ago. I think having no dress code at all is even worse. When I was in college guys would wear swim shorts, tank tops and slippers and nobody would say anything. It's disrespectful to other colleagues and college as as public institution.
You people who want to wear shorts and t-shirts in Qatar all of places have obviously NO clue how to deal with warmth and prolonged sunlight. Wearing clothing covering the arms and legs, while still being thin and breathing, as well as white, is the best way to go. - Someone who lived in Qatar for a year
Basically this. Denim and cotton aren't the only fabrics they make clothes out of, you know.
I wore denim jeans and a t-shirt around Dubai for a few hours in 47C heat. For an Australian that's used to the heat, it was difficult, but manageable, since there was free water in every shop and everywhere was air conditioned. Those white robes looked cool (geddit?) but i was only there for a few days and i didn't want to blow my money on stupid shit.

I don't find this to be too unreasonable. You can't enter, say, the holy see/vatican/various cathedrals in a miniskirt or shorts either, yet people who come over happily comply, and there's 40°c over here too, during summer. [editline]29th May 2014[/editline] You'll manage
"Reflect your respect" ? I don't have respect for ridiculous laws.

What is there to do in Qatar if your not watching a football game anyway? All these Arab countries look ok if you have a lot of money to spend but apart from that it look's like you get to look at sand all day
Can't let the Muslim men feel responsible if they feel the urge to rape women not dressed "modestly", right guys? The whole way they expect women to dress is fucking obscene.
You can't enter, say, the holy see/vatican/various cathedrals in a miniskirt or shorts either
but in The Vatican City, this doesn't happen:
It's kind of tough to take this dress code seriously when one of their planned stadiums looks like this:
Yay for hyperpyrexia!

You guys all complain when arabic people come to the UK and don't follow our rules, now you're saying you'd refuse to go to an arabic country and follow their rules? How hypocritical.
You guys all complain when arabic people come to the UK and don't follow our rules, now you're saying you'd refuse to go to an arabic country and follow their rules?
Can't let the Muslim men feel responsible if they feel the urge to rape women not dressed "modestly", right guys? Oh, what are they planning to do about heat in the stadiums as well? They are gunna have to get some seriously big fans or spinklers to keep people watching cool
I find the assumption that you have any respect for such things insulting.
When I was in college guys would wear swim shorts, tank tops and slippers and nobody would say anything.
I'm so sorry to hear this, are you okay dude ????????
Lol guys, you're allowed to wear shorts, as long as they're below the knees. Also, I don't know about you lot, but above-knee shorts on guys look really fuckin weird imo, gangly knees sticking out and showing a bit of thigh is a really cringe look. I prefer shorts that are a little below the knee, they look better. Also, the white jalabiyas are really comfortable and breezy. Keeps you cool.
They don't respect our culture, why should we respect theirs?
They don't respect our culture, why should we respect theirs?
I don't know who we or they are but you're nuts if you think people running the Olympics can change the laws of the country, they have no choice. Not to mention you have to cover up at a certain point because the heat will kill you. People there dress like that for a reason and it's not because of Islam or whatever hick explanation you think is correct.
I don't think events like the Olympics or World Cup should be held in places where visitors/tourists face unreasonable danger through otherwise normal behaviour, such as "wearing clothes" or "kissing".
I don't think events like the Olympics or World Cup should be held in places where visitors/tourists face unreasonable danger through otherwise normal behaviour, such as "wearing clothes" or "kissing".
That's your opinion of normal. It's completely subjective. There's a guy in Qatar somewhere saying "I think the olympics should only be held in places where you can't display affection in public, you know, somewhere normal" and he's just as wrong as you are.
Qatar still uses floggings as a form of punishment, do you think people's distaste for that is subjective?
You're right, ethnocentrism is fucking awesome. Let's bring civilization to these savages.

It's the principle of the absence of choice. It's not the fact that they're going "Thou Should", it's that they're going "Thou Must."
