The script for the Warner Bros/Legendary Pictures live action adaptation of anime artist Katsuhiro Otomo’s 6-volume graphic novel Akira has been sent to a short list of actors. The picture is finally taking shape for an August start, following the delivery of a rewrite by Steve Kloves that has director Albert Hughes and the studio brass excited. The story takes place in the rebuilt New Manhattan where a leader of a biker gang saves his friend from a medical experiment. There are two major roles, and I'm told that for Tetsuo, Robert Pattinson, Andrew Garfield and James McAvoy have been given the new script. For the role of Kaneda, the script has been given to Garrett Hedlund, Michael Fassbender, Chris Pine, Justin Timberlake and Joaquin Phoenix. The two leads are expected to come from that group of actors.
Andrew Lazar is producing with Appian Way’s Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Davisson Killoran. Akira has been one of Warner Bros' high priority projects since the studio with Legendary Pictures acquired it for a 7-figure sum 2 years ago from manga publisher Kodansha. The intention has been to make 2 films, each covering 3 books in the series. Akira was first adapted for the screen in 1988.
Fucking really? I am speechless.
Picture stolen from a great Blog Post about this, pretty much sums up my reaction: http://fatboyroberts.wordpress.com/2011/03/23/requiem-for-neo-tokyo/
Why the fuck arent they japanese
I don't see what the big deal is, everyone in anime is white anyway, despite the fact that they are supposed to be asian.
Oh, I'm sorry guys. They should cast Tyler Perry as the lead role and have it set around a multicultural biker gang.
And the setting is Manhattan :smug:

They are pale.

I should embolden that too. There is just so much fuck-up in such little text. The original Akira was heavily influenced by Japanese culture and folklore, how could they do this?
It's a live action ADAPTION, not a live action remake.
I don't think 'Americanizing' it would automatically make it bad. What I'm concerned about for this movie is that I don't know how well this will be in live-action. Akira looks fucking phenomenal as an animated movie and if they don't a great job on the special effects and cinematography, this will be disappointing.
This is supposed to be an adaptation of the manga, and I've only seen the Japanimation movie of it so I might be missing out on stuff. I don't know.
I hope they don't butcher this. Akira was one of the reasons I wanted a motorcycle when I was little, an addiction I'm still grappling with today.
Hollywood adaptions tend to be shit.
Should i watch akira though? i never seen it.

I am only worried about the director NOT BEING ORIGINAL and having a shitty vision towards what we already seen about akira. If they' gun mix it up a bit and make it completely different for their convenience compared to the manga or even the movie I just say it's better to not mess with a classic IMO.
What exactly are people expecting from a Hollywood adaptation of a manga?

A good adaptation, considering it's coming from hollywood.

It's full of mutant children abominations and motorcycle battles.
If that's not reason enough, nothing is.

Lol, have you ever seen a Hollywood movie?
I just realized that all these actors seem rather old to be playing teenagers. What would they do about that?

Cut their hair, lots of make-up.

Hollywood doesn't give a fuck. They just cast whatever actor is the most popular and worth the most.
Lol, have you ever seen a Hollywood movie?
I try not too.

In that case, the roles should go to Tom Hanks and Brad Pitt.
Does it really matter?
They're also doing it in ENGLISH!? Wow! Do they have no respect for the source material!? Nihango (that means JAPANESE for you dumb bakka-gaijins!) is the most beautiful language, and is the only language such a work of art should ever be heard in!
If this is rated PG-13 I know for a fact it can't be like Akira.

Sadly, this is not an exaggeration of how some people feel. :smith:
some people just can't stop themselves from taking culture and fucking rip it to shreds
you can't do akira in america you fucking idiots, you ruin the bloody point
and to be honest, i hardly doubt they could come even close to translating the complexity of the subject matter. do something new, why ruin shit from the past
I thought this was cancelled, maybe the Cowboy Bebop will be made too. :3:
But anyways, I have doubts about this being that close to the original story. And people won't even know its based off a manga I bet.

You probably haven't watched more movies from them. Almost every videogame adaption and most remakes of great horror movies were fucking terrible.

No, they're going to teach all the actors Japanese and release a movie that their target audience can't understand. The whole point of making a movie in the end is to make money, you need to take liberties when doing an adaption so you can please all the people that are paying to see it.

That would require them to actually make something original though

Are you pissed that you bothered to learn Japanese in your parents basement and rarely can use it?
