Breaking: Explosion at Boston Marathon [2 dead, many injured]
1,002 replies, posted
Once this next thread opens, I'll tell my story of what happened during the marathon, because I was an eyewitness and I was there.
I've got one nice comment, which is immediately followed by someone jumping in to explain why this shows that the U.S. use of drones overseas is a travesty.
Thanks guys.

It is a bit sensationalist, I'll give you that.

Are you fucking kidding me
You should have heard my brother when he found out about the bombing...
Judging from stupider Facebookers above, I think you should stay that way if you don't want to go totally batshit.
I generally only have people that I really and actually know, with a bit of family sprinkled over.
I wouldn't put up with such people in real life, let alone on Facebook so I guess that's why.
The only mention of Boston on my Facebook is my own listing an update of events.
But I think the lack of other posts can be attributed to the fact that I only have 55 friends.
I'm a lonely fuck
Most of my friends and myself are praying for the victims and their families. :(
This kind of puts violence in the Middle East in perspective for me. It's easy to dismiss things like suicide bombings when there are no reporters on the scene. The world sure can be shitty.
If we didn't live in a democracy the government wouldn't have to kill people to pass legislation.
Nothing wrong with people wanting to contribute to the discussion.
I know, but when you preface your comment with "I know people are going to say this isn't the place to discuss this" you're probably going to get some weird looks.
Duh, University of Terrorism.
nah but experts can conclude this from other explosions carried out by funded terrorist organization (professionals), to what happened today.
i wasn't talking about whether or not it was amature, just the placement of the bombs

I think the more reporting that is done, the more aware people get of the war.

Its odd that they would place it in a place where there would be a rapid response time. Thats all thats going to come of this

after the majority of the race was over and people were leaving.
after the majority of the race was over and people were leaving.
Actually hundreds of runners were yet to finish.

Depends. There's plenty of books in the world but how many times might you have heard from people, "I hate reading/books"? Just because the stories are there don't mean they'll be heard or read, sadly.
Actually hundreds of runners were yet to finish.
It was a pretty big race. It could have been mostly over and still have hundreds left running.
should be interesting to see what's developed when i wake up tomorrow
this has been one hell of a day, but at least i found out that none of my coworkers, friends, or family members were harmed. i'm very grateful for that.

This is not false.

Maybe late with this, but all the evidence is pointing toward this being a attacked by a lonewolf(Probably a socio or physcopath). And if he or she aren't apprehended soon, the chances are that he or she will improve their bomb design and strike again.

Which evidence points to a sole bomber and not a group, exactly?
source that isn't you, please
CNN, they've been saying that the attack was likely the doing of a lone wolf or a small group rather than a large organization like Al Qaeda.

They're probably just saying that to get views.
I think what bothers me the most is that people can somehow justify these kinds of actions. I mean, there are few - if any - circumstances in which it is justifiable to intentionally harm others, especially to this extent.
CNN, they've been saying that the attack was likely the doing of a lone wolf or a small group rather than a large organization like Al Qaeda.
al Qaeda is not a "large" organization. At their most, they've numbered roughly 1000 members. Majority of attacks done "by al Qaeda" have been done through those associated with the group but not the group itself.

I'd think that blaming Al Qaeda would get more views than it being an individual/small group.

I'll be blunt with you; As a Canadian (and someone who was in the Middle East when 9/11 happened) CNN has always seemed to me nearly as sensationalist as Fox. There's nothing they do better than painting dramatic pictures and fear-mongering.
Maybe they're right here, maybe they aren't. I'm going to wait for the official report before I decide what to believe.

I doubt that. A lone guy who can make a couple working bombs, but then also make 5 that don't work? Sounds more or less like a small incompetent group of radicals to me

Full transcript of Obama's statements on Boston -
"Good afternoon, everybody. Earlier today, I was briefed by my homeland security team on the events in Boston. We’re continuing to monitor and respond to the situation as it unfolds. And I’ve directed the full resources of the federal government to help state and local authorities protect our people, increase security around the United States as necessary, and investigate what happened.
The American people will say a prayer for Boston tonight. And Michelle and I send our deepest thoughts and prayers to the families of the victims in the wake of this senseless loss.
We don’t yet have all the answers. But we do know that multiple people have been wounded, some gravely, in explosions at the Boston Marathon.
I’ve spoken to FBI Director Mueller and Secretary of Homeland Security Napolitano, and they’re mobilizing the appropriate resources to investigate and to respond.
I’ve updated leaders of Congress in both parties, and we reaffirmed that on days like this there are no Republicans or Democrats - we are Americans, united in concern for our fellow citizens.
I’ve also spoken with Governor Patrick and Mayor Menino, and made it clear that they have every single federal resource necessary to care for the victims and counsel the families. And above all, I made clear to them that all Americans stand with the people of Boston.
Boston police, firefighters, and first responders as well as the National Guard responded heroically, and continue to do so as we speak. It’s a reminder that so many Americans serve and sacrifice on our behalf every single day, without regard to their own safety, in dangerous and difficult circumstances. And we salute all those who assisted in responding so quickly and professionally to this tragedy.
We still do not know who did this or why. And people shouldn’t jump to conclusions before we have all the facts. But make no mistake - we will get to the bottom of this. And we will find out who did this; we'll find out why they did this. Any responsible individuals, any responsible groups will feel the full weight of justice.
Today is a holiday in Massachusetts - Patriots’ Day. It’s a day that celebrates the free and fiercely independent spirit that this great American city of Boston has reflected from the earliest days of our nation. And it’s a day that draws the world to Boston’s streets in a spirit of friendly competition. Boston is a tough and resilient town. So are its people. I'm supremely confident that Bostonians will pull together, take care of each other, and move forward as one proud city. And as they do, the American people will be with them every single step of the way.
You should anticipate that as we get more information, our teams will provide you briefings. We're still in the investigation stage at this point. But I just want to reiterate we will find out who did this and we will hold them accountable.
Thank you very much."
