This paves the road closer to being on andriod phones.
What?
This paves the road closer to being on andriod phones.
We already have that. :|
Steam is already on Android, you ponce.
And there are references in the strings.xml file in the app to downloads. You never know, a framework may be in place to serve mobile games eventually.
Cool, looking forward to a touchscreen desktop thats actually egronomically usable. As for the tablet market, go for it microsoft, just dont mix that shit into the desktop, Which they are doing now. All of that spiel about windows having two UI's is wrong. It has one, its the same across all platforms, unlike android 4 for example which adapts on demand. Screen dpi below 120? Ok! I'll be a tablet now, and serve tablet content! Where as win8 us a mix of both at all times. EDIT: fixed horrible formatting due to phonepost.
Win 8 still has two different UIs. Just because they co-exist doesn't mean there is one. Aero and Metro are stills separate, you just don't get a choice in which one you'll be using. Touchscreen computers don't neccesarily need to be upright monitors, stuff like the old MS Surface device would be something Win 8 would be useful on, screens that accept input like a graphics tablet would be something it would work on. You're not thinking outside of the box much. Yes, Metro doesn't work very well for a normal monitor, with normal input devices. But it can be fixed, shit, if MS actually tried to have a uniform UI for once, Aero would be gone and replaced with a more Metro style, which would probably have a Metro start button of sorts. I'm sure with enough backlash MS would fix the Metro start screen up a bit for Desktop use, but seeing as instead of actually trying it and submitting formal complaints, people are just dismissing the entire OS as shit due to one or two aspects, they aren't going to listen. Oh and Android has been built for multiple device types since day 1. Windows hasn't. Big difference.
So if its made properly we might see some nicer performance on the games?

And used the SteamPlay thing Valve added for games that have a desktop and mobile edition (obviously SteamPlay would be for things like PvZ which wouldn't be too different).
Judging from the console output, the L4D2 port looks like it's close to being finished.
Judging from the console output, the L4D2 port looks like it's close to being finished.
Looks like a somewhat playable Alpha or maybe even a Beta to me. Especially since the article mentions some OpenGL issues which the guy from Phoronix (can't remember his name) helped them to fix.

I'll be honest, when I first installed the dev preview I was incredibly excited and loved everything at first. I was under the impression that the start screen was enabled to show developers how the tablet side of windows would function (and the conventional start menu would return in later builds) you know, since most devs don't have a windows 8 compatible tablet. They have already proven you can have two UI's available to hop between with a registry key edit in the dev preview, tablet manufacturers could simply set that value to identify the device as a tablet, hell it could even detect the ARM CPU in the thing. I could look at this another way like you suggest and see that Microsoft want complete metro integration across the board eventually. The transition is going to be incredibly rough, but worth it in the end I suppose.
Oh and Android has been built for multiple device types since day 1. Windows hasn't. Which is probably why we have these problems every other OS from them. They try to implement something too quickly. People can't adjust to the change quickly enough and just hate it. They learn from it and eventually fix it next release. I kinda thought the same about the dev preview, and thought that maybe they had something up their sleeves to replace the start screen with, but they don't seem to. Which is a pain for normal desktop and laptop usage, but it isn't totally debilitating. Being able to detect the device it's running on should be totally possible, but I think they just got a bit eager to show off Metro really. It's a nice design idea, but they just need to implement a better version for desktop use. Hopefully they will listen to the users for the next version of Windows, or be massive bros and replace Metros start screen in a service pack.
meh, until every PC game is on Linux I won't consider using a Linux Distro as my main OS.
meh, until every PC game is on Linux I won't consider using a Linux Distro as my main OS.
Holy shit, you literally play every PC game? But really, if that's not enough for you to switch, why switch at all?
Very nice, I've been looking for a reason to buy that extra hard drive and make that Linux partition. The day this gets released I'm going shopping for a terabyte disk, even if it's still expensive as hell. :v:
meh, until every PC game is on Linux I won't consider using a Linux Distro as my main OS.
Babysteps.
Holy shit, you literally play every PC game? But really, if that's not enough for you to switch, why switch at all?
I worded it that way since if I decided to be lazy. That and saying "I will never switch to Linux" gets people all mad, and if you back it up with how it doesn't have games they all point to ancient PC game ports or Amnesia: Dark Descent or some other tiny tiny tiny handful of games (when in comparison to Windows) and act like that negated my point. [editline]25th April 2012[/editline]
Babysteps.
believe me, in my ideal world Linux would have gotten big and Windows would be the obscure >.1% OS that no one my age has heard of, but there are just so many steps (more like leaps) to make PC gaming on Linux a reality. that just thinking about it hurts, and trying to rationalize and think out how Linux could replace Windows sounds so idealistic and silly. I'd rather not deal with the pain and just use Windows, and forget about Linux and all of it's advantages over Windows.
Luckily I play very few games, Valve games account for 90% of what I play and the rest runs satisfactorily in WINE. good enough for me!
I hope that Source being ported to Linux takes it a step away from it being able to run on Android. That could be pretty cool
Hey look, its Linux Mint
Hey look, its Linux Mint
No, it's Ubuntu 11.10, it's even mentioned in the article:
Left 4 Dead 2 running natively on Linux.... No Wine library or anything else for "fake" support. This is on an Ubuntu 11.10 installation with the AMD Catalyst Linux driver.
Linux Mint is (funny enough) based on Ubuntu (except a few variants)
I wonder if they will anyhow try to handle running windows games through Wine from Linux steam. [editline]26th April 2012[/editline] It doesn't seem very probable as it would be hella problematic but it would certainly be nice.
Hey look, its Linux Mint
mint has a default white/green color scheme, not brown/purple
mint has a default white/green color scheme, not brown/purple
If you look in the processes list it even says: "ubuntu???-syncdaemon"
I'd actually love to see integration for Wine as well as native clients. For games that don't have Linux ports yet, just say "I see you have Wine installed, Wanna use that?". Would be an awesome feature.
I'd love to stick to my linux partition, but most of my games aren't Valve related.
I'd love to stick to my linux partition, but most of my games aren't Valve related.
All my games are Valve related or already have a Linux port.
Holy shit, you literally play every PC game? I mean this is facepunch so he probably plays more than a few repetitive zombie shooters and a puzzle game.
Guys, regardless if its just source being ported or not, this is a massive step. One of the most widely known video game names in the world is embracing Linux with open arms. This can and will open the door for many MANY more companies to follow suit. This is the beginning of a new age right here.
Why would source games be enough for you to switch if you play games? Joking aside, if it isnt enough for him to switch, then he probably wont switch until most games are linux anyway, i would imagine.
