I'm not arguing against freedom of speech, I'm arguing for respect. Why is this so hard to get that there should be times and places for freedom of speech and I don't care what you say. We are supposed to live in a nice little society to the point where freedom of speech does have specific days (Read -> Student protest (to which I did go to thanks for asking Thisispain)). It was a day of mourning and the fact that we let these people do this on this day speaks leaps and bounds for what kind of society england actually is.
People have the right to show respect or disrespect when they feel like it. It's also within the bounds of free speech. You can't force people to show respect towards whom they hate by limiting their free speech.
But its a pointless right. What is the point of flag burning? What is the point of showing dissent.
what's the point of anything man
They'd probably kick you out of the event, because the people there would probably get upset. Should it be illegal? Certainly not.
But I'm not saying it should be illegal :v:, I'm saying they should be told by someone to stop and to have a little respect. Maybe even as you put it, be moved away from the event.
If I wore a Nazi suit to one of the many World War 2 remembrance days we have are you saying that that's completely fine.
that's just goofy.
What if you eat the flag
You will probably choke Unless you're a magician/wizard
that's just goofy.
Tell me precisely how it is different from this example. Why can we not as a species have some respect between us all.
But I'm not saying it should be illegal :v:, I'm saying they should be told by someone to stop and to have a little respect. Maybe even as you put it, be moved away from the event.
Okay, and they have to right to ask them to stop, just as they have the right to continue burning the flag. However, if you intend to forcefully stop them from doing what they're doing, then you're committing a crime.
I'm saying they should be told by someone to stop and to have a little respect.

However, a small opposing group of Muslims - some of whom had travelled hundreds of miles to rebut the extremists - staged a counter-demonstration nearby, holding up placards reading "Muslims Against Extremism" and "If You Want Sharia, Move To Saudi". Abdul Sallam, 41, who was waving a sign that read "Keep The Silence", travelled down to London from his home in Glasgow to show the strength of his feelings. He said: "I'm a Muslim. What they're doing is bringing shame on all Muslims. This is not part of the teachings of Islam. "Islam teaches you that when you see anything bad or evil, you should speak out against it. "If the moderate Muslims all came out and spoke out, that would defeat them. "I am proud to be British. I love my country. All these people are doing is breaking Britain apart."
isn't that lovely
Tell me precisely how it is different from this example. Why can we not as a species have some respect between us all.
You misunderstand my position. It isn't a matter of respect, as I think this action is very disrespectful, and I'd certainly never do it. However, I do not hold the view that somehow I need to impose what I think is respectful on others to such a degree as to infringe on their freedom of speech.
what's the point of anything man
I'd rather have healthcare, pensions, minimum wages, maximum hours, etc than the right to vote, have free speech or freedom of religion. (I wouldn't care, I'd just follow the religion against my own beliefs purely for personal profit)
I'd rather have healthcare, pensions, minimum wages, maximum hours, etc than the right to vote, have free speech or freedom of religion. (I wouldn't care, I'd just follow the religion against my own beliefs purely for personal profit)
I'll take both, thank you very much.
Tell me precisely how it is different from this example. Why can we not as a species have some respect between us all.
woah i was defending their right to protest i don't even agree with them at all and am totally not anti-respeckt
But I'm not saying it should be illegal :v:, I'm saying they should be told by someone to stop and to have a little respect. Maybe even as you put it, be moved away from the event.
You have every right to do that, what's the problem?
isn't that lovely
And I know of these things, they happen a lot because these idiots make majorities look bad. I'm not saying forcibly stop them, but as a nation we should ALL tell them to stop. But we don't we let them carry on for political correctness sake.
I'd rather have healthcare, pensions, minimum wages, maximum hours, etc than the right to vote, have free speech or freedom of religion.
duly noted
woah i was defending their right to protest i don't even agree with them at all and am totally not anti-respeckt
This is what I was saying. We aren't arguing on behalf of disrespect, but on the right to protest as one sees fit.
They were protesting against America in London? Hmm.
.... so a protest in egypt against israel was okay but in this situation it's worth making a joke about?
Tell me precisely how it is different from this example. Why can we not as a species have some respect between us all.
you're right, let's respect each others right to freedom of speech and expression
And I know of these things, they happen a lot because these idiots make majorities look bad. I'm not saying forcibly stop them, but as a nation we should ALL tell them to stop. But we don't we let them carry on for political correctness sake.
Okay, and so if they want to they can. Still not seeing your point.
I'll take both, thank you very much.
You can only choose one. Would you prefer the first or latter?
I'm not saying forcibly stop them, but as a nation we should ALL tell them to stop. But we don't we let them carry on for political correctness sake.
what exactly are you talking about? you say we shouldn't forcibly stop them, then you say we let them carry on for political correctness sake. make up your mind [editline]12th September 2011[/editline]
You can only choose one.
this is just pathetic i'm running out of negative descriptions
You can only choose one. Would you prefer the first or latter?
The latter because then I could vote for a party that wants free healthcare, free education etc.
Free speech, love it or hate it. Given the anti-Islamic crusade that was launched in the immediate wake of 9/11, I can empathize. Take note, they are protesting. That's it. No bombs, no hijackings, none of the shit that Fox News tells us all Muslims are waiting for an excuse to do. Before we pretend we're better than flag burning, we did have drunken celebrations in the streets when Bin Laden was killed.
what exactly are you talking about? you say we shouldn't forcibly stop them, then you say we let them carry on for political correctness sake. make up your mind [editline]12th September 2011[/editline] this is just pathetic i'm running out of negative descriptions
Maybe his opinion changed?
this is just pathetic i'm running out of negative descriptions
I'm asking what you would prefer.
I burned a US Flag last 4th of July. It was awesome.
Why do I get the feeling these are the same people that burnt the poppies and all they're trying to do is upset someone for the fuck of it.
You can only choose one.
Do Denmark, Sweden, and Norway not have both healthcare, minimum wage, and their freedoms? You can choose both.
I'm asking what you would prefer.
my preference would be both.
They have the right to free speech but did anybody watch the video? They were threatening the US. USA YOU WILL PAY and other chants were made in the video along with burning a picture of the flag. Are flames and flammable starters allowed on London streets? It doesn't seem like it should. If they did this in the states they would have been arrested on those terms, the Supreme Court already decided burning a flag was within freedom of speech so that can't be contested.
