Newt Gingrich promises moon base by the end of his second term

Wanted to make Moonbase Alpha reference, cried because I got beat to the punch.
AEIOU
Well I'd certainly vote Gingrich based entirely on that claim.
Let's let them make a moon base, and fly all of the politics there, so we can fix this country without them being in the way.
Newt should take some inspiration from Patrick Star.
Fuck that, let's do it the other way around. We go to the moon and start a proper nation.
I want to believe.

In other news, Romney promises public drinking water will contain unicorn blood to fortify our children's magical abilities.
Says the fuck who's constantly saying that NASA funding should be reduced and less "bureaucratic". :downs:

In the last thread it was saying he wanted private industry like SpaceX to make a huge boost. NASA is brought down by lack of funding and the fact that people who could care less have a huge say in what they do (Congress).
To quote from the last thread:
To the guys saying NASA's problem is funding, it isn't, it's proven that they just make projects cost more than private entities would.
The problem with NASA is that it's run by committee. Or, rather, Congress, running a Committee on Science, Space and Technology, which in turn has a subcomittee for Space and Aeronautics. They're not anywhere near autonomous, they have to act as directed by a bunch of politicians who haven't the slightest goddamn idea what they're doing, and are often tied to bizarre business requirements which cost shitloads of money.
FYI he isn't serious about it.

And to the much less soy-sauced world,

Doesn't the Earth magnetic tail prevent any long term occupation?

This man preaches the truth, Newt! Don't go to space! That's where they live!
Repubs spent years cutting space development when we didnt need too, then now that the democrats had an excuse to cut it, now they are all the sudden ready to make advances into space
And unicorns are real, and we all have superpowers, Newt.
Well, it seems as though I have lost faith in humanity, or at least this generation of politics. It's as if I can feel society cracking under strain and will ultimately fall apart within my or my kids lifetimes. It's not just newt, but its just every fucking politician that has come to power in recent years. This is just a ploy to buy votes, the United States has cut funding for NASA to the point where NASA is focusing on probes and satellites primarily. Now Newt wants to go to the fucking moon? Permanently? The US just did away with the space plane, I don't see any heavy lifting interplanetary space craft taking it's place any time soon. As well as the fact that any venture to the moon would be so costly only a united effort by half the planet would produce anything sustainable. The last space craft capable of that venture and doing it well was the Saturn IV heavy lifter, and that heavy lifter is finished. If Newt wants to go to the moon, the US and Europe and the rest of the world ought to be debt free and environmentally efficient before any effort like that is undertaken.
We want to know what betterment can be done soon, Newt, not nearly a decade from now!
fuck the Moon
I want a Mars landing
Newt's kidding himself. He's just saying this because Obama's delaying.
And anyways, even if we did, we're still way behind in life support technologies, let alone low-gravity research on its effects. You'd have to constantly fund very expensive spacecraft that could be constantly shipping supplies to the moon to set up, else you'd have to create a humongous spaceship with everything on board, which would be unlike anything we've ever seen. You'd have to have the first part of the base ready to go *right* away, as well as have systems for water recycling and possibly horticulture ready to go if they are to stay for the duration of construction. Otherwise the astronauts will run out of consumable supplies.
Unless Newt planned on getting rid of everything else but the space program and conscripted the entire US population into manufacturing, there's just no way it would happen in 20 years, let alone 8.
If the man wants to go to the moon then I'm not going to stop him. If a republican wins, I'd rather it be a republican that at least seems to have an interest in space.
I know that, but if he does, he better at least be pouring funds into our science programs. And, nations be damned, I'd rather we pool our resources with someone like Russia, or the ESA, or maybe both.
I'm okay with a republican that wants to build a moon base even better if he wants to cooperate with private industry/other countries.
When somebody later asked about the logistics it would require, he asked them what the hell logistics are.
[editline]27th January 2012[/editline]
Like seriously. The massive amount of supplies it would take for a moon base is way too pricey for any use we would get.

ISS only happened as a political move iirc.
Not going to happen.
Another funny fact, Look at Newt, then look at John Madden.
it looks funny to me how the basis for a big Moonbase Alpha meme looks so similar to a man wishing for a actual space base on the moon.

Except John Madden is a professional at what he does.
I misread the title as "Newt Gingrich purchases moon base".
I was really confused for awhile.
He may be bullshitting but I have a hard time seeing how this is anything but a positive.
At least shows some superficial interest in space.
It will bring me great comfort as I'm living in a cardboard box without food stamps, that we have people on the moon too.
As unlikely as this is, at the minimum it would mean the US would take an interest in space again.
Why on Earth are Republicans interested in space all of a sudden?
There's no oil or brown people for them to kill up there.
Well thats rather bold of you, Paramesotriton. Lets talk about your second term before you lose the first one.
