My opinion is that every major nation has or is doing horrendous shit all over the place.

We should fight to stop it but at some point the options just become pragmatically the best. We need to figure out when that's appropriate.

That's still not a good reason to accept the status quo and not strive to be better. I don't think we could function as a nation without some level of intelligence-gathering, but there should be practical limits to how low we're willing to go in the name of security. Yeah, so maybe most modern nations have problems with military contractors dictating policy, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't try to solve the issue or curb their influence when we can.

Pragmatism is not really an enlightened principle; after all the term 'Machiavellian' has a distinctly negative meaning.
