800mb in chrome? hue
I'm really in awe of the amount of people who complain about chrome using memory. an application capable of allocating more memory is always better than an application that caps at a small amount just to support ancient hardware. unless you like to watch 50 youtube videos at the same time you'll probably never see the usage go over 700 MB. anything up to 1.5 GB is completely reasonable for a modern browser as long as it has a legitimate amount of process going on to warrant that much memory usage.
I don't really have a problem with Chrome, but Chrome for Mobile? Jesus Christ that thing sucks. Y'all remember this? [vid]http://videos-a-1.ak.instagram.com/hphotos-ak-xaf1/t50.2886-16/10987071_436667729814241_1195637616_n.mp4[/vid] I wish I had a video of the occasional app-breaking iOS bug too - and the crashes, general slowness and unresponsiveness on both devices.
I would opt into having this as a feature on my phone.
And driving with 1000lbs of lead in the rear seat also ruins gas mileage.
but maybe i need to transport that lead? there's no justification for that when there are other cars out there that can easily handle it.
if you don't have a PC with enough RAM to handle chrome, upgrade your computer what the fuck are you doing used chrome basically since it was released as a competitor to firefox, who at the time had (and still has) some of the worst memory leaks out of any browser and have never experienced a memory leak. i leave tabs open all the time. i also have a normal amount of RAM in my PC. [editline]18th March 2015[/editline] 30+ tabs are you fucking kidding? you don't need 30 tabs open all the time bro
I dunno if you know this, but, Chromebooks are a thing. Certainly a platform that can benefit from reduced memory usage.
I'm probably just a tech illiterate moron but I don't understand why web browsers are such slow resource hogs.
I'm probably just a tech illiterate moron but I don't understand why web browsers are such slow resource hogs.
Because you're basically running code from somewhere on the internet, so a ton of sandboxing needs to happen to ensure stability (can't have your browser crashing because someone wrote shitty JS) , or to ensure security (all those sandboxed tabs), among many reasons.
Last I checked, another instance of steamwebhelper.exe opens for every tab in Chrome.
Last I checked, another instance of steamwebhelper.exe opens for every tab in Chrome.
Steam's in-game overlay uses a (obsoleted) version of Chromium
I personally have never had a problem with Chrome, and I have more than enough RAM to handle the amount of tabs I usually have open - usually no more than five or six. That said, I've always hated Firefox, even back when it was "in vogue" in 2005 or so (no lie, I stuck with IE6 over that crap.) Still, I've heard good things about modern Microsoft browsers lately, despite the IE brand. About the only reason I haven't switched back from Chrome is due to my extensions and a preference for Chrome's minimalist interface. Spartan's already pretty close to Chrome in looks, and if the rumors about it supporting Chrome extensions are true, I might just make the switch back when Win10 comes out.
Steam's in-game overlay uses a (obsoleted) version of Chromium
steam's in-game browser is the pinnacle of all web browsers i thoroughly enjoy using a browser with the same amount of functionality as a cinderblock
What's wrong with Chrome? I never have any problems with it at all.
It's an insane memory hog really. Not too much of an issue on my desktop, but on my 4 gig laptop?Pain and suffering.
It is totally ridiculous and unnecessary to have 30+ tabs open, no offense.
When you need a lot of reference, you're looking on forums and you're researching a whole load of shit you need a fuckload of tabs.
You're in luck. http://www.windowscentral.com/microsofts-spartan-browser-windows-10-reportedly-supports-chrome-extensions
SHIIIIEEEET Now we'll just have to see how it handles memory.
It really adds up with 30+ tabs. Don't pretend like it doesn't.
I usually have around 25-30 tabs open all the time too.. idk why everyone thinks its the weirdest thing ever. Especially if you are working on something. My friend and I do graphic work and she literally has over 80-120 pages open. (She uses dual computers though)
but maybe i need to transport that lead? there's no justification for that when there are other cars out there that can easily handle it.
Basically you just said that you should find a browser that fits your browsing habits rather than forcing them on another. Which is exactly what my post was saying too.
Basically you just said that you should find a browser that fits your browsing habits rather than forcing them on another. Which is exactly what my post was saying too.
I get the feeling having 20+ tabs open is fairly common, and that chromium developers are just trying to avoid the issue. Also, please tell me the situation wherein memory usage improvement hurts the average user.
30+ tabs are you fucking kidding? you don't need 30 tabs open all the time bro
Haters gonna hate
Basically you just said that you should find a browser that fits your browsing habits rather than forcing them on another. Which is exactly what my post was saying too.
Which is exactly why I said I'm hoping project spartan turns out well. There really isn't one that fits my needs perfectly.
It really adds up with 30+ tabs. Don't pretend like it doesn't.
Why would you ever have 30 tabs? I rarely have 10 or more.
Haters gonna hate
Even then that's only 20, add 10 more.
I get the feeling having 20+ tabs open is fairly common, and that chromium developers are just trying to avoid the issue. Also, please tell me the situation wherein memory usage improvement hurts the average user.
Choose a product that fits your browsing needs. If you have an issue with chrome using memory with 30 tabs, then use another browser that is built to handle 30 tabs with little memory.
I'll just stick with my current browser
Choose a product that fits your browsing needs. If you have an issue with chrome using memory with 30 tabs, then use another browser that is built to handle 30 tabs with little memory.
Or, instead of fragmenting what people are using (Which is a pain in the ass for developers) we can just you know, improve existing products.
When you need a lot of reference, you're looking on forums and you're researching a whole load of shit you need a fuckload of tabs.
or you could read them one at a time and close then as you're done with them, and then move on to a new tab. seriously, you don't need that many tabs open. if you have so many tabs open to the point where it's hurting your overall system performance, your browsing habits need a cleanup. at most i have 7 or 8 tabs open when i'm needing a lot of reference and research because i keep the search tab open and limit myself to 4 or 5 tabs at a time. you don't need so many tabs at once lol.
I use Chrome because I rarely use more than 4 tabs, what the fuck would you need over 30 tabs for?
Or, instead of fragmenting what people are using (Which is a pain in the ass for developers) we can just you know, improve existing products.
Back to the car analogy: The auto maker could develop that sedan to carry that 1000lbs of lead efficiently. or the driver could get an already existing vehicle that is made to handle such loads. Which one would give you faster satisfaction? Waiting for if/when a small vehicle can handle excessive loads or move to a different vehicle that already can handle such loads. I'm not saying that memory improvements aren't needed/wanted, but if people are going to bitch about memory usage with 20+ tabs at once then they need to change browsers. Its obvious that Chrome works differently than other browsers, so if you're not happy with it then move on really. You're not bound to one browser.

You're not bound to one browser.
Oh, that makes sense; I'll start putting higher octane in my chrome when I need it to run better. Browsers are not cars, memory efficiency improvements will benefit everyone who uses the browser, not just people who use a ton of tabs, I retain my assertion that chrome devs simply want to avoid doing any complex work, as they've done to something as simple as APNG support (Seriously, look at the developer discussions, patches exist that provide excellent APNG support, but chromium maintainers refuse to add it). Also, I simply prefer chrome to Opera and Firefox, memory handling isn't something that significant to make me switch; especially because firefox only performs slightly better in that regard; and then it lacks a ton of features I enjoy in chrome - You are literally arguing against chrome improving its memory handling.
30 tabs looks like this at 1080p with normal scaling: How the hell do you even manage that?
