British MPs to receive 11% pay rise despite opposition from all three party leaders

not sure what you're saying with that but my point was it's not even close to "more than double"
Politicians and greed, this never changes, considering they get all their expenses paid.
The reasons why judges and MPs get such high wages is to reduce the ammount of curruptibility in a sense.
If they have a lot, they are less likely to accept bribes. If you put them on the average wage of the population, but still give them power to decide over millions, a lot more people would be much more likely to accept a nice extra bonus.
Not true at all, look at the expenses scandal many of them dipped their hands into, paying them more clearly does not resolve corruption among MP's.

Are you arguing that increasing wages to reduce expenses fiddling won't work, because MPs fiddled their expenses prior to the increased wages?
Because that isn't very smart. I agree that this might not work, but you can't state that it won't because of an event which this is intended to stop.
holy fuck £66,396? That's actually not that much considering these guy are basically the leaders of your country. In Canada MPs make $160,200, which is more than double.
Mps just represent an area. They are not "the leaders of our country"
In most cases they flat out refuse to answer your mail or address any issues, my dads last 5 letters to the mp regarding various issues have gone totally unanswered.
They claim money for bigger houses, second houses and duck houses from their expenses. In the cases where I have interviewed one they didn't seem in any way smarter than your average joe. Just privilaged and lucky to be in that position.
Them getting a raise while everyone else is told to grin and bear it "austerity measures" (also this http://facepunch.com/showthread.php?t=1331791) is rediculous.
For people that are pretty much running the country, 60k pounds seems like a very reasonable amount for how much they could get otherwise by conforming to lobbyists' demands.
So you think giving them a raise will stop them being corrupt? Bullshit. They'll take as much as they can and more.
I honestly think MPs should be payed the average wage of the population, that way it discourages career politicians and it motivates them to actually do something when everyone is in the shit and earning shit average wages.
You realize that that essentially forces every politician into an interest group right? Not only does he have more incentive to respond to lobbyists, but he becomes one himself.

Then get rid of him. His interests should lie with the country, not with some company trying to screw people over. You cannot truely represent the people unless you are one of them.

What the fuck does this even mean?
If they really cared they'd donate the extra to charity.

Being an MP is a skilled job - as far as I know all of them have degrees. Why on Earth would you become an MP to earn the average wage when you could have a much better job which pays more. Secondly, most MPs just represent a small area of the country, and do mostly local politics stuff, so even if they were good at their job they wouldn't be able to significantly change the average wage of the whole country. And even if they could do that, someone as skilled at that should be earning far more than average wage.
