I have a cheap 100mbps dedi server running on Ubuntu, I dunno how I could set up a livestream server on it though v:v:v

To be fair one thing that would make Twitch a lot better is not the amount of delay, but rather making sure that everyone has the same delay within 1/2 seconds. Probably technically unfeasible though
All you need is nginx rtmp module with a bit of PHP for authentication and viewing. It's tedious but it's lightweight and free, it's also how HitBox works. Got the system working on my own server at 300kb/s: http://nlan.org/video/stream/corporalasshole
It's been an absolute pain in the ass. I watch a lot of MTG, and streamer interaction is a big thing for those streams. There is always a 30+ second delay that makes asking questions or creating input near impossible.
tbh he did join at the end so
Yeah, he was the one that was brought in to try and save the company. He isn't really responsible for own3d's death.
That's because the CEO of Hitbox (Rene Weinberger) was the CFO of own3d. People have reason to freak out.

As a "save the company" CFO. I think people dump too much shit on the guy since own3d was pretty far gone when he joined.
But what does this mean for VGCW/Salty Bet streams, which ride almost entirely on viewer feedback?
It will be just like those VCR tapes for kids where they ask you a question and stare at you for a minute before moving on.
I frequent Twitch quite a lot, and have subscribed to several channels there. It really sucks knowing that I'm going to be having delays of up to a minute instead of just a few seconds tops.
It's a completely different experience, not being right on top of everything that is happening. I can only imagine what it's like for the people actually streaming, they've got to wait around for the viewers to catch up, and there are a hell of a lot of instances where that would ruin the whole point of having a live audience that can reply almost instantly to what you're saying.
God forbid Twitch purchase more hardware to support this growth.
Yes use their infinite money to buy hardware, unless you want to pay for the service or want that awful low quality only like niconicodouga don't just say that buying more servers is something you can do on a whim.
Twitch needs to get more professional, they're still acting like some minor streaming site. Twitch has grown quite massively and they need a overhaul to adapt to the new demands.
I don't enjoy streams that much but affecting the comments is a big deal, a lot of people get enjoyement by chatting directly to the host while playing. The sense of communication is a big draw for viewers.
That explains why a lot of my Salty Bets don't go through, at least it's explained directly and I don't have to assume anymore. Also staying on topic, Gygas fight right now.

Good thing he lost.
It can be up to 60 seconds depending on traffic, not always 60 seconds. This is one of the most sensationalist titles I've seen in a while.
Don't worry guys, your late night indie game streams with 3 viewers probably won't be affected.
Hah, you thought that you were being funny, but you're WRONG.
Last night, I streamed Super Puzzle Platformer Deluxe to an audience of exactly two people and the delay was 40 seconds.

they have no competition. they're getting paid by sony and microsoft for streaming on consoles. they have hundreds of people with sub button which equals to $2.50 each sub for twitch. there's also turbo which is straight up $9.99 directly to twitch. then there's the ads that's played, 100k viewer streams, tournaments that go up to 500k viewers, etc.
you think they don't have the money?
???
Shouldn't this be the other way around?
They're talking about viewers, there is no Twitch app for viewing streams available on PS4. You can only watch people streaming from PS4s on a PS4 at the moment. The Xbox has a Twitch app where you just have access to everything like you would in a web browser.
Now SingSing is gonna see my Kappa a minute too late.
Welp, explains why my BL2 stream earlier was a bit laggy when I had a friend of mine see if I figured out how to stream. I hope this isn't permanent.
Me and my friends have recently started streaming stuff to each other on Twitch and this explains why there's been so much delay the past few nights. Having such a huge delay really defeats the whole point, too. Does anyone have any recommendations for some alternative sites that'd be good for just streaming to a handful of friends?
first youtube, and now twitch is going down the shitter?
Oh no, Saltybet?
They're trying so hard to expand their brand that they forget they actually have a product. Any stream that relies or foccuses on viewer interaction is majorly shafted by this mandatory 30~60 second delay. It's not even an inconvenience, it outright destroys that kind of community functionality. This kills the twitch. If I want to just watch videos, I'll just go to youtube. Better video quality and no constant "buffering" bullshit.

Arguable, depending on where you live :v:
Arguable, depending on where you live :v:
Not really, if need be one can simply let a youtube video buffer for as long as it takes. That isn't possible with a livestream.
The time is right for someone to rise up as a serious competitor for Twitch.
It has been mediocre since forever and since this change it got even worse
The whole site is a clusterfuck of unorganized buttons and finding anything can be difficult if you are new to Twitch. For example when starting your channel you probably waste quite some time looking for that streaming key that is hidden away on the 'streaming tools' page.
One of the worst thing is the chat that doesn't work half of the time and now that interaction got killed by a delay i can't wait to see something new and fresh that does things right.

On the other hand, video streaming is incredibly bandwidth intensive. I'm not saying they don't have the money, but running a live streaming site on that scale must be really expensive.
A large chunk of the delay is caused by their new player, if you watch the stream through Livestreamer the delay is considerably shorter (and also lets you use VLC instead of the shitty flash player).

Cannot agree more, the only downside is that it is command line based.
That is why I created my own little tool for that

Don't judge my stream list please

B- but you have darksydephil on it! How am I supposed to not question that?
http://www.hitbox.tv/
Started by the same head people who were around when own3d got shut down, but no one is streaming on it because they think they're a bunch of shandy fucks who don't pay people.
Looks like a total rip-off of Twitch to be honest. Why the hell do these sites have those 'sidebars'. It's not a tablet application, it's a desktop website.

It is written in java, so you need java run time for it, sorry.

This. Depending on what they do (The probably have unmetered Gbit deals) it's fairly expensive to run each server.
I'm also assuming they decided to switch to a 3rd party CDN provider, which due to their nature will add a good amount of lag to the stream; but it's overwhelmingly worth it.
I don't know about Akamai, but I know that CloudFront provides streaming (RMPT) and HTTP (for HTTP chunking video (There was a nice name for this, but I forgot it)); it can make the videos much more reachable from things far away from the origin, and will put very little work on the actual steam server.
Oh man this broke the Twitch application on XBMC.

I just found out there is a fix going up for it, thank god.
