If you can afford a TV like this, you can afford a PC good enough to play games at that resolution.
Good point. [editline]9th January 2012[/editline]
Sorry, I worded that poorly. I was indeed referring to broadcast TV and Blu-Ray.
Broadcasting is possible but discs will be obsolete. You need terabytes of data.
Uncompressed, a 20 minute broadcast would require roughly 4 TB of storage.
Actually that figure is for UHDTV, not QFHD (which is what this is) but I would image it's not far off.
Of course there are no movies to support it. None could support HDTV either until blu-ray.
Blu-Ray 2.0 incoming.
It's a cheap way of getting HD off a console as well - monitors cost less than TVs, and at least when I bought it, a VGA cable was cheaper than a HDMI cable.
Yeah, that's actually what I do; all my consoles and PC are all routed into my monitor through a series of adapters. It's kind of messy, but it works. Xbox 360 > HDMI > HDMI-to-DVI Converter > DVI > Monitor PS3 > HDMI > HDMI-to-DVI Converter > DVI > Monitor Wii > Wii-to-HDMI Converter > HDMI > HDMI-to-DVI Converter > DVI > Monitor And all sound split off and routed into my glorious speaker system. The ultimate condensed entertainment setup (to me, anyway).

Is this an actual TV? Or just a large display for corporate offices and the like?
It's a cheap way of getting HD off a console as well - monitors cost less than TVs, and at least when I bought it, a VGA cable was cheaper than a HDMI cable.
thats why I have a monitor for my PS3, also use it for my computer, I just wish it had a DVI input as well so I could have both plugged in at the same time or if someone could point me to a HDMI KVM switch type of thing
Holographic Versatile Disc
Mother of fuck, i've been missing out on technological advancements.
Is this an actual TV? Or just a large display for corporate offices and the like?
What is a TV but a display with built in receiving hardware?
Pure peniswaving, utterly pointless waste of money at the moment.
peniswaving is it's own reward.
You guys realise that most GPU's don't support resolutions so large right? Most of them max out at 2560x1600, only specialist stuff (with little horsepower asides from the large resolutions) can do that. So no, it's completely useless for the time being. Hell I wonder what connector you need, I'm not sure HDMI can cut it.
4k looks fucking crazy good. You could always hook up your computer to that or watch 4k videos shot on RED. Still, I can't wait till 4k+ stuff becomes mainstream. :(
Hell I wonder what connector you need, I'm not sure HDMI can cut it.
HDMI 1.4a supports it. The new AMD 7970 supports that.
Holographic Versatile Disc
"Holographic drives are projected to initially cost around US$15,000, and a single disc around US$120–180" I realize they're suspected to drop but I doubt technologies like early blu-ray costed that much even in their beginning phases
Such is the case with pretty much any modern technology. Though you'd likely be question or detained for having such alien technology in those times.
Hire a PMC, bring them back in time with you. Tell the Government that you have 'power' and they can't hold you, and if they try, then "they'll" come looking for you and get you out :v:
Hell I wonder what connector you need, I'm not sure HDMI can cut it.
[release]HDMI 1.4 increases the maximum resolution to 4K × 2K, i.e. 3840 × 2160p (Quad HD) at 24 Hz/25 Hz/30 Hz or 4096 × 2160p at 24 Hz (which is a resolution used with digital theaters)[/release]
Useless. When movies will be released in a 4K resolution, 4K screens will be much more cheaper and better. And for PC gaming I don't see the point of having a higher resolution but standing further from the screen. Might be helpful for some rich guy who suffers from eyestrain i guess.

People, People! Imagine the porn!
Actually, you can hook up a PC to this and comfortably play something with an Xbawx 360 controller. All comfort of a console playing with none of the drawbacks.
Nice thing having a 1280x720 resolution while you play halo reach stretched over 84 inches. I would only think pcs can support this resolution, not consoles. It uses about 7 million pixels so it would definitely work on a Radeon hd 6000 or 7000 series gpu.
Nor can any house support a TV that large.
My house has a 73" DLP TV
All you need is an incomprehensibly powerful computer to play games decently at that resolution.
I played Just Cause 2 on highest settings using Eyefinity at 5.2 megapixels and this is only 7.5 megapixels. I'm sure most high end PCs could easily run games at that resolution.
Yeah, a PC could support it and play games at that resolution. As usual, a high-res TV is announced and everyone talking about it forgets that PCs have been doing resolutions over 1080p for a long time.
But my 5870 can only do 2560x1600! :saddowns: Seriously though, are there graphics cards that support 3480 x 2160? HDMI does support it according to Wikipedia.
... I have a 27" standard definition tv
Well the Lords of the rings movies are shot with the Red camera so they could bring out a very high resolution version of the movies, they need to invent a new medium to burn it on though.
Does actually nothing support that resolution? I was under the impression that you could get bigger ones just by stringing two monitors together. There might be no movies that support it, but that doesn't mean it's an unsupported resolution.
There are no non PC applications that support the resolution. Any VESA compliant app or game will run it just fine, provided you have the right video cards. [editline]9th January 2012[/editline]
Only the 7970.
Any SLI/XFire set up for the last two generations can support that resolution.
