i'm pretty sure the 13 year old wasn't trying to send a deep political and philisophical message about his opinions on the state of america, he was wiping his fucking hands.
i respect elements of culture such as religious items etc, but a cheap, plastic, chinese-made flag bought by the school to keep soccer moms from having a hissy-fit is in no way relative to an item of significant cultural importance. the only people that should be annoyed with it are the owners of the flag.
Clearly you don't respect items of significant importance if you're determining its cultural worth by what it is made of and not for what it stands for. A crucifix is often made of wood; the Torah, Bible, and Qur'an are written on paper; gravestones are made of different stones. Seemingly insignificant, unremarkable items make up any important cultural item. That does not undermine what it stands for (This in of itself delves into just about every cultural icon from flags and religious items to jewelry or t-shirts); and the only people that are annoyed are the owners of the flag (the teacher represents the school and makes sure students don't vandalize school property).
Am I the only person who thinks its not okay to wipe your hands on a countries flag?

America is one of the only countries where you can go everywhere and see it's colors flying. I've been abroad on more than one occasion and while certain places in foreign countries will have the flag flying, it is nowhere near as widespread as it is in the USA. Nearly every house has a flagpole with the star-spangled flying.
DAMNED COMMIE KIDS AND THEIR AMERICA HATING COMMIE-NISMS HGARAHRHAHAGA- It's a flag, get over it. People in my state (Florida) act like it's the Mona Lisa.

Texas? most of us really aren't flag crazy at all. in my town the only places with an american flag are the fucking town hall & police station, both of which have a state flag right next to it.
You guys and your obsession with your queens and princes.
Oh man you sure got us there, what a fantastic counter.
& the schools, obvi [editline]9th June 2012[/editline]
Oh man you sure got us there, what a fantastic counter.
both are symbolic and useless, yeah it was pretty good tbh!
Despite his mothers' protest, the school maintains the boy was "disciplined in accordance with the Code of Student Conduct."
Where does using a flag as a hand towel fall under the schools penal code? I dare you to find it.
It's a piece of cloth. It is literally a piece of woven fabric. I don't even care if you took a picture of my country and shoved it up your ass, it just seems so incredibly petty and pointless to see a flag being "Disgraced" as being a punishable offence.
this just in everything's value is based solely on what it's made of and there is no such thing as personal value my pet skull that's been around for nearly a year now? WHO GIVES TWO TITS AND A GRAVY IT'S JUST MADE OF FUCKIN' LIKE STYROFOAM AND PAPER MACHE OR SOME SHIT my grandpa's tommy gun that was passed down? who gives a shit lol it's just metal and wood nobody's asking you to suck the flag's dick like they do, they just want you to respect their beliefs and how much it means to them I don't believe the kid deserved the punishment he got (Seems like an honest mistake to me), nor do I hold the flag in the same high regards BUT I still believe that you should respect other people's personal beliefs, even if they aren't your own.
You guys and your obsession with a piece of cloth.
Sweden has laws regarding the size of a flag in relation to the flagpole Flag too big? Fine.

The USA is not a homogeneous country. We are incredibly large and have an incredibly varied set of morals, beliefs, and political ideals.
I have american, british and finnish flag bath towels of which I wipe my nuts on, by the teachers logic I should be executed :v: wiki: -snip- So it appears flag desecration isn't illegal in the US, meaning the teachers reaction was solely personal, how about that
Your use of wikipedia disturbs me.

I'm pretty sure the article said it was against school code. Doesn't make it any less ridiculous, but people blaming it on the government are just wrong. Rules in schools can be unique. There was even a supreme court case (I think there was actually more than one) that involved destruction of the American flag [editline]9th June 2012[/editline] http://www.streetlaw.org/en/landmark/cases/texas_v_johnson [editline]9th June 2012[/editline] GOD DAMNIT I WASTED MY 1,000 POST IN THE SENSATIONALIST HEADLINES
So would you be happy with me wiping my wet hands all over your flag? Probably not
Go right ahead.
Do you guys still say the pledge of allegiance every day before class?
Do you guys still say the pledge of allegiance every day before class?
yeah
I can respect opinions, it doesn't exclude me from criticising them however.
except your main criticism so far seems to be that people are finding value in woven fabric, which is a bullshit criticism because it completely ignores personal value things don't have to be made out of fucking diamonds to be valuable to someone

I went to Italy and there were Italian flags hanging from houses and all around the cities I visited. Greece also had plenty of flags. The US is one of the only places where it's cool to fly a flag from another country at your house. My neighborhood has maybe one or two flags flying. It's by no means appropriate to use the flag to clean your hands, he's 13 so he should know that, it's couldn't have been the only fucking thing to wipe his hands on. If there was such a bad need to wipe his hands he could have used his pants leg. Suspension is extreme though, he should have just got a warning.
what a joke

How do you "has an american"? Who the fuck is Due and why should he take note? If you are so against the flag why is it your opinion? [editline]10th June 2012[/editline]
Is it possible to be half american?
No, American is a nationality not an ethnicity.
Do you guys still say the pledge of allegiance every day before class?
Yeah. In fact, apparently it's Texas state law that if you do not want to say the pledge of allegiance, you must walk outside of the classroom until it is over. That's a pretty bullshit law, though. You shouldn't be required by law to respect others opinions. I wouldn't have a problem stepping outside if the teacher asked, but I have a big problem with the government ordering me to.
The reciting of Pledge of Allegiance shouldn't be mandatory at all and I liked this version: "I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands; one nation indivisible with liberty and justice for all."
Let's not start the "under god" debate
You Americans and your flag. Did you know there's a propper procedure for folding and storing your flag in America? It's not law as far as I know but it's still a crazy thing to have. In Ireland we just kind of throw them wherever when they're not used. Plus we don't use them often. I went about 3 years without seeing the Irish flag before the whole World Cup thing kicked off again.
