Then why are you railing at Sobotnik for his views?
ffs there is a difference between should and can. Those are two different words with two different meanings.
You SHOULD respect someone's opinion. That doesn't mean you SHOULD be punished for disrespecting someone.
If you CAN be punished for failing to do something you SHOULD do, that is not necessarily right.
I think most countries have a procedure for storing and folding flags. I know that in Scouts we learned how to fold it, that it shouldn't touch the ground, etc
Nope, only America has that. Most countries do fold their flags when put away but America is the only one where you're supposed to put it in a certain way.
Then why are you railing at Sobotnik for his views?
I wouldn't call it railing. Let me explain better.
I don't believe the kid deserved the punishment he got (Seems like an honest mistake to me), nor do I hold the flag in the same high regards BUT I still believe that you should respect other people's personal beliefs, even if they aren't your own.
I do believe this, but I believe it under the circumstances that you aren't terribly uncomfortable with it, and that you choose to. Sobotnik, if they don't want to, should be allowed to treat the flag like just another piece of cloth if they so choose.

Telling others to respect differing opinions is not the same as respecting them by yourself
And no, I SHOULDN'T have to respect other people's opinions if I choose not to
I can do whatever I damn well please
Sandman said himself that we should be allowed to not respect other people's opinions, so I don't know what you're going on about
This, exactly.
I understand if someone was upset by a kid wiping their hands on the flag. But you shouldn't wave your authority around and punish someone because you value something they don't.
Your avatar disagrees. :v:
If you want to disrespect the flag, do it at home, behind closed doors. You don't go to church on sunday mornings to tell the preacher how wrong he is, and how god isn't real. You let them do as they want, and you go on about your life. When you see a flag you do not have to respect it, but don't use it like a rag. Ya it might be a rag to you, but every flag represents the things that have made up a country. Just like the uniform of a soldier represents his loyalty to his country and his people, he is excepted to keep it clean and respectable to show that he holds it in high regard, whether he believes it to be important or not. You just gotta have respect for one another, and one another's beliefs.
While I don't think a suspension is warranted, but Jesus you guys sound so horribly ~edgy~

Yea, you CAN do whatever you please. You SHOULD respect other people's opinions if they aren't harmful to you.
What part about this are you not getting?
[editline]10th June 2012[/editline]
Can and should are not the same word.
In Australia we take a bit of a lighter tone.
Some comedians made a tv series about our Prime Minister (Played by another woman of course).
A couple of episodes in they had sex on the Australia flag just for the hell of it.
It's funny because a lot of american flags are made in china
No, Most are made in America. Every school flag is made in America. Districts strictly will only approve a flag if it's bought from an American flag company that produces them in America.
Here is the key-idea. It does not matter to you guys, but it matters to a lot of other people.
That is like saying cars are pretty much dime a dozen, I don't care about your car so let me slam it and put dents in it. It can be replaced right?
That main issue that needs to be addressed in this article is the mentality "I don't care, so fuck all of you." People don't have any respect for each other, we're slowly turning in to a "fuck you, deal with it" society. If you want to wipe your ass with the American flag then do it at home with your own flag. Don't do it in a public space with someone's property.
Good example is, I'm not from the US but when to school in America. I didn't believe in standing or saying the pledge. My teachers understood my stance on it and while it took place every morning I sat quietly and allow those who did say the pledge do so in a respectful manner.
I've been all over the world, various states and countries. You would be surprised at the things that offend people, you just learn to respect it. You don't have to change your whole view, you just don't get to act like an asshat about it.
In all honesty, I don't think that they should be offended unless if that person insulted the meaning behind it. Ironically, the kid did the opposite.
If his hands were all dirty and shit it's kind of a dick move. Like if his hands were just wet and he needed to dry them then that's fine, but if he was wiping off barbeque sauce with it that's kiiiind of a dick move. Although still an over reaction on the teachers part.

Cars don't usually cost five bucks
American schools
Rights
You can only pick one.
Eh, I think he shouldn't have done it. The school shouldn't act so harsh about it. I do not except people from other countries to agree with me, but think of it in this way, a Flag represents a nation as a whole.
Every nation has a flag, and it is kinda proper sense you should at least respect it. If there was no napkins left, then just shake your hands off, don't grab the flag whether it's American, German, British, Russian, or freakin Santa Clauses and use it. The whole "it's just a piece of cloth" might be true, but it's also a symbol that you should respect regardless of what nation it's from.
this is how we respect our flag:
To be fair it was pretty immature of him, regardless of your opinion.
my opinion is that it doesn't matter
so no
although I can't imagine flags are very good for drying your hands, he should've just used his pants
If he had done it maliciously then maybe a detention or something would be deserved
no, at most a stern evil look. if you disrupt his education because of a piece of colored cloth you're a fucking idiot.
[editline]10th June 2012[/editline]
the sad fact is this poor bastard probably got the earbashing of his life from his parents too.

I think he'd deserve some minor punishment for wiping his hands on pretty much anything. Even if it was just any cloth decoration, wiping your hands on it it would sort of like just throwing trash on the floor in terms of lack of consideration to public property and hygiene.

I'm preeeeety sure cloth is a good rag to dry your wet hands.
Jesus guys, it's like he set it on fire to you. He had water on his hands, didn't want to wipe it on his pants for self respect and wiped water on a flag. It probably dried out in a minute. If Obama watched him do it, he'd probably shrug it off and say "hey dude, that's not a good thing to do. You may offend some people on Facepunch (or something)" because he's s kid..
You guys and your obsession with your queens and princes.
I think wiping your hands on the queen is a bit different than wiping your hands on a flag.
[editline]10th June 2012[/editline]
Then why have flags at all? Flags are a symbol of the nation or organization. Wiping your hands on the flag is pretty disrespectful. It's basically saying "I don't think highly of the things this flag represents". That's why flag burning is a big deal, and why flying the flag upside down is a big deal. These things are very symbolic gestures.
The kid probably shouldn't have gotten suspended, but the teacher should have explained how rude it is to wipe your hands on a nation's flag.
I can see how it's rude if it's to be disrespectful, but the kid just didn't want wet hands.

Actually, it's like saying it's okay to wipe water off your hands on a $20 car. Massive difference.
So would you be happy with me wiping my wet hands all over your flag?
Probably not
I wouldnt care its just a flag
You guys and your obsession with your queens and princes.
You guys and your obsession with your zergs and protoss
Jesus christ it is literally just a bit of water on cloth. Water evaporates.
The flag is fine, it'll survive a couple of marginally damp handprints.

Countries are just an imaginary construct men have made up. If the guy wanted dry hands, he can dry his fucking hands.
Well, it's the nation's flag, it needs to be treated with respect. Hell the kid's 13 years old, he should know better then to wipe his godamned hands on the flag.
It's a piece of cloth, why treat it with respect?
So would you be happy with me wiping my wet hands all over your flag?

Sure,here:

Print it out and wipe your ass with it if you'd like,i don't mind.
If I had to wipe my hands and there was a flag nearby, why the hell not? It's not like I do it because I disrespect the country, I simply do it for practical reasons. Even if he did it because of disrespect, boo fucking hoo, it's not like the flag became dirty or anything.
People who take respect and patriotism of a country to such extents anger me a fucking lot.
I would wipe my ass on my nation's flag, and I'm not even communist.
