Probably isn't harmful, but there's a chance it might be.
It's like Russian Roulette but with horse meat :/
That's called Spam.

Dont tread on spam. Its pretty much the only thing Minnesota is proud of.
Hah, I buy Beef lasagne quite often and suspected the meat would be something bad, But to be honest I don't mind that it horse meat and would love those recalled ones as I have little money.
If you buy Spam and expect any ingredient that sounds remotely safe or healthy, you're doing it wrong.
Ingredients of Spam:
Chopped pork shoulder meat with ham meat added
Salt
Water
Modified Potato Starch
Sodium Nitrite
I don't see the problem

I think what he means to say is that it's high in sodium and saturated fats. Which it is. So is the majority of the meat market, processed foods or not.
What's with all the horse meat in the UK? Is it insanely cheap or something compared to traditional beef?
From what I understand one supplier of "beef" (I think using quotes is fair there..) in Poland has some questionable sources for the cows for said "beef". It just happens that supplier supplies most of the food producers that sell food in the UK.
If the horses were being bred for human consumption anyway there isn't any risk at all and the only issue is the huge labelling issue. Of course if they weren't being bred for human consumptionthere could be issues. However seeing as no one has gotten ill from all this stuff (which appears to have been on sale for years) I am guessing that horse meat is cheap or something.
Apparently its put into cheap burgers to make them slightly less cheap tasting.

It's definitely not a health food but the bad rap that spam gets is weird considering it's better for you than hot dogs or basically any other kind of pork sausage.
I just ate an entire Findus beef lasagna a couple days ago.
I guess I was hungry enough to eat a horse...
[editline]7th February 2013[/editline]
I wish horse meat could be sold legally, lean meat like that is delicious.
Why don't they just replace beef with the word meat and sell it. Nobody will care, because nobody actually looks at the composition since it all tastes the same when it comes to lasagne.

It is sold legally. Its just very hard to find here because people think that horses are pets and can't be eaten.
http://www.exoticmeats.co.uk/horse-meat.html if you want some real horse meat :P
I wish Venison was more mainstream, that stuff's delicious.
Apparently there's a fair chance the horse meat might be contaminated with a veterinary medicine known as 'bute' that can be harmful for humans, especially if the horses weren't reared specifically for meat, hence the worry.
And 100% horse meat, how do you fuck up so badly?
i love me some horse bute
i love me some horse bute
wrong kind of horse rearing

Because not all meat is the same?
In other news people decide eating horse meat is A ok because horses are delicious in lasagne apparently
Are you saying horse meat is inherently less ethical to eat than any other meat
Are you saying horse meat is inherently less ethical to eat than any other meat
It's about as ethical as eating dog or cat meat, but for some reason I imagine people on Facepunch aren't too open to the idea of promoting dog/cat meat farms.
And still tastes good so?
It's still utterly indicative of either maliciousness or gross negligence on the part of the company. They are either false advertising or they are so negligent about whats going into the meat grinder that they are accidentally putting horse into it. Both of those are bad things.
Because not all meat is the same?
So? Nobody ever reads beyond lasagne and the picture.

So what's the difference between slaughtering a cow for meat and slaughtering a horse for meat? Just because people think that horses are pets doesn't mean that that get entitled to special treatment.

most people dont ride and make pets out of cows
nor do we drink horse milk
it's easier to eat something you don't have any sort of positive attachment to
I thought it was horse meat, I had one the other day and it gave me the trots
And still tastes good so?
What if it was human meat?
What if it was human meat?

so if you had a delicious steak that is the best tasting meal you can remember, then after you eat it the chef tells you it's human meat, all you would say is "so?"

So what's the difference between slaughtering a cow for meat and slaughtering a horse for meat? Just because people think that horses are pets doesn't mean that that get entitled to special treatment.
They get entitled to special treatment to not be eaten because they're seen as pets, there's really no other reason.
Again, why is it ok to say Horse should be fair game but not dog, cat, gerbil, or any other animal seen exclusively as pets in Euro-American cultures?
What's with all the horse meat in the UK? Is it insanely cheap or something compared to traditional beef?
Raising horses for meat is far more expensive, since they take a long time to reach full size, and aren't very good at turning grain/grass into meat compared to other forms of livestock. Most horse meat comes from sick/injured/old horses that weren't raised for human consumption, but can't be used as work horses anymore.
I really couldn't give a damn, I know why all the controversy is around it but it's hardly going to kill everyone.

Aye; personally I don't have much of a problem with the horse meat thing for the most part. When I say that, I mean I'm not upset by the notion of horse meat; the only thing that disappoints me is that using horse meat in a beef lasagne is false advertising. Other than that, if the horses lived ok with more-or-less full lives, I would gladly chow down on a horse lasagne.
Still, we should be grateful that it was only as bad as this, since as dictated by Murphy's Law and the depressing action-RPG Nier, if it can get worse it WILL get worse. And by worse I mean the meat could have been Mrs Lovett's Soylent Mince, everyone's favourite protein-rich meat substitute that totally isn't people. (I Can't Believe It's Not People!)
I would be fine if they actually labelled it as horsemeat
