Many people here are making the mistake of lumping all the rebels into some kind of all-encompassing "rebel faction" while it's been made explicit many times that the Syrian opposition is composed of many different groups and grows more fragmented every day. This war is far from over. If Assad falls, the fragile alliance between secularists and Islamists will be broken, and the fighting will continue. From there it's all up to the Syrian people. Supporting Assad because of said Islamists being part of the rebellion is fucking stupid. We're talking about the man who started this whole carnage in the first place, ordering militias to open fire on peaceful protesters and ordering the military to actively target civilians, intelectuals and hospitals. Supporting him is wrong on so many levels that I shouldn't even have to explain why.
I wouldn't go so far to deny a 'rebel faction' exists (or existed), you've got to remember these groups have previously worked together and probably still do. Just because the opposition is fragmented doesn't detract from how worrying it is they are paying lip service to groups such as Jabhat Al-Nursa. The only cool people in this whole shitfest are the Kurds
those who don't understand history are doomed to repeat it
