CA State Senator says gamers have 'no credibility' in violent video games debate, should 'just quiet

this is like saying feminists have no say in women's rights
He's basically doing the exact same thing as calling people against gun ban "gun nuts"
When some people in seats of power seriously believe that if a woman didn't want to be raped, her body would shut down, yeah, they kinda unfortunately do.
And you think they should be automatically taken at their word? You don't think it'd be right for a psychologist to say 'I'm sorry, but the studies show that she's probably not telling you the truth in order to protect herself, and most women are emotionally damaged by rape'?
It might seem callous but sometimes people have strong reasons not to tell the truth, and sometimes it takes an informed outside observer to use trends rather than individual anecdotes.
And it's been proven that alcohol, in large quantities, can cause alcohol poisoning or over time, liver problems.
Which you wouldn't get from asking alcoholics what their personal opinion is, and wouldn't even enter the discussion if you took the perspective that only people with personal experience with alcohol matter and thus legislation should be decided by alcoholics. It's absurd.
And because he's a rich CEO suddenly makes his opinion less valid? If I were a Congressman I would want to hear everybody's perspective and not just those of "psychologists or economists or whatever '-ist' has the most relevance."
It's still his opinion, and an extremely biased one at that, not a professional assessment by a qualified and impartial observer. He's free to have an opinion, but if he has no relevant credentials and is clearly massively biased he shouldn't be in charge of making an important legal decision.
All I'm saying is that gamers aren't the people who should be deciding whether or not games affect people negatively, just as the NRA shouldn't be the ones deciding whether guns should be legal or not and drug dealers shouldn't be the ones deciding whether drugs should be legalized. It doesn't matter how much personal experience you have with games, it doesn't make you a behavioral psychologist and it doesn't qualify you to speak about all people. Leave that to the experts.
I'm not a psychologist by any means but I think it stands to reason that the relationship between violence and video games is correlation based on the types of people violent games attract. And if you're unable to discern reality from a video game which seems to be a crux for these anti-video game people, then you have much, much bigger problems than violent video games.
Absolutely, and I never said that this senator's argument was correct and games are harmful, only that in the context of the debate regarding violent media, active consumers of that media are too biased to be the final arbiters of that decision. I have no doubt that psychologists will find no substantive causation between violence and violent video games, but that's not our call to make.
This is about their self-interest
I'm sitting in my room, and my senator came in, he pulled up a chair and they sat down
They go, "FalseLogic, we need to talk to you"
And I go, "Okay, what's the matter?"
They go, "I've been noticing lately you've been having a lot of problems, and you've been going off for no reason, and we're afraid you're gonna hurt somebody, and we're afraid you're gonna hurt yourself, so we decided that it would be in your best interest, if we put in a place a ban against all these things you dont need"
And I go, "Wait! What are you talking about? WE decided?! MY best interest?! How do YOU know what MY best interest is? How can YOU say what MY best interest is? What are you trying to say, I'M crazy?! When I went to YOUR schools, I went to YOUR churches, I went to YOUR institutional learning facilities! So how can you say I'm crazy?!
if i wasn't too busy playing violent video games i'd batter him with a baseball bat !
How do you want me to respond? You seriously compared rape to violent video games. Look yourself in the mirror and make that argument.
Do you even know what an analogy is?
When did scout1 turn into a general shitposter? I don't remember him being like this a year ago

Violent videogames.
The title is quite true. If you're in support of something, and make it a major part of your life (like many people, including myself, do), then you're not going to act rational about it when someone gives an opposing opinion. It's true for much more than games, pretty much every facet of life (guns, religion, sexual orientation...).
Violent videogames.
Not even once.
-snip
I propose we fuck him in the rectum, and when he cries and begs for us to stop we tell him to shut up, because he has no credibility because he's only saying so out of self interest.

It's up to the people who are passionate about a topic to defend it. If they don't who else is going to?
Of course it's about self interest. Politics is all about self interest. The senator is just being a hypocrite.
This is just discrimination against a minority. It's exactly like saying "Oh, well, you're black so I don't think you can debate about equal rights without being biased, so your opinion really doesn't matter."
Cooks now have no credibility when it comes to food.
Lawyers have no credibility when it comes to laws.
Roger Ebert has absolutely no credibility when it comes to movie reviews.
Doctors have no credibility when it comes to medical advice.
Wizards have no credibility when it comes to wizardry.
Pilots have no credibility when it comes to flying.
Society is running amok.
He's probably one of those people who say women shouldn't have a say in the legality of abortion.
Such a majority of America plays violent video games that it can't be blamed for violence. Saying a certain criminal liked violent video games is like saying he liked donuts and pizza. It is so common now that it just isn't relevant. These people who commit violent crimes aren't inspired by video games, they're inspired by the media covering each of these things so intensely. If these shooters got no publicity we probably wouldn't have copy cats using the exact same kind of gun just because the news said the last guy used it.
Politicians should have no say in politics.
Wait that wouldn't work at all..
Increased incidence of anti-social disorders and crime amongst the population who play violent video games, etc...
Senator Yee also attempted to ban a gun attachment based on a single article in the SF Post early last year.
Yes, because god forbid we defend our interests, right?
Seriously, the guy sounds like a saturday morning cartoon villain.
h-hey, you can't defend black rights, black person, that's selfish.
h-hey, you can't defend gamer rights, gamer person, that's selfish.
h-hey, you can't defend female rights, female person, that's selfish.
h-hey, you can't defend jewish rights, jewish person, that's selfish.
h-hey, you can't defend gay rights, gay person, that's selfish.
and the list goes on and on.
...Er, does being a gamer make you a qualified psychologist? Where can I get my degree?
no but it only takes half a brain to understand correlation is not causation.
I know you're pretty cocky with opinions and one sided, and I already know the video is fact checked, correct, and unbiased.
Anything could have been used to "Ramp" these psychopaths up to kill someone you know. MLP, flowers, games, chess, porn, anything. Do you know why? Because people who shoot up schools are not sane to begin with.
I love ultra violence in video games and I have no interest in killing anyone. If anything, I'm a pacifist. Do you know why? Because I'm not mentally insane.

The thing is though, there is some connection with that one. Apparently the pirates are mostly farmers who have lost their livelihood due to the increase in temperature.
This is a better graph for that example to be honest because these two things really are not related.

Or how countries with more Chocolate have less murders / more Nobel peace prize winners.

less pirates, more temperature
What a true statement. The people who play the games and thus know their own feelings and beliefs while playing said games have no credibility in game arguments because they apparently lust for violence. Couldn't agree more. A++ statement.
Man of the Fucking Year everyone.
I love it how people as dumb as him get to run countries.
The senator made me violent. I'm going to shoot congress. Ban senators please.

rock and roll music is the devil's work and it will corrupt the youth of today, the 1960s
