From http://www.ubuntuvibes.com/2012/10/valve-linux-more-viable-than-windows-8.html
In a presentation at Ubuntu Developer Summit currently going on in Denmark, Drew Bliss from Valve said that Linux is becoming more viable platform as an alternative to Windows 8. Windows 8 ships with its own app store and it is moving away from an open platform model. Some other points from the talk: *Steam client is running nicely on Ubuntu and many developers have approached them with good game products. *Cooperation with Canonical has been good. *Ubuntu is preferred platform as it has a large user base and good community support with a strong company like Canonical behind it. *Linux has everything they need: good OpenGL, pulseaudio, OpenAL and input support. *New Source engine games will be available for Linux. *No firm time frame for Steam Linux release, but soon. *Copy protection is up to the game publishers. Drew announced that anyone with a Launchpad account attending UDS will be given Steam access through a beta key.
http://p4r.buzzleberry.com/?p=357 (Im not sure about the credibility of this one) Valve Officially Passes On Windows 8, Confirms Half-Life 3 is Linux Exclusive At LinuxCon Europe, Newell officially announced the details during an on-stage question and answer session. The following excerpt announces the exclusive release of Half-Life 3 on Linux:
Audience member: Okay, um. What about Half-Life 3? [audience laughter] Newell: Funny you should mention that. I would like to state right now that the next Half-Life game will officially be exclusive on Linux platforms. [audience cheers] Newell: Many might say, Gabe, there isn’t a strong enough gamer base on Linux, you will lose money! I do not care about the money. I care about the players. They deserve an unparalleled experience and I intend to give it to them. This release will spark a Linux gaming revolution and will provide a dynamic shift in the developer space that is desperately needed to save everyone from the nightmare that is Windows 8. Audience member: What if there isn’t a revolution? Newell: There will be. There has to be. If I didn’t have faith that Linux would take off as a gaming platform, I would not be up here. In fact, we had to restart development when I made the decision to move to Linux. Half-Life 3 for Windows would be finished right now if I did not make that choice. Audience member: What about iOS? Newell: Exclusive means exclusive. Audience member: So, how about a release date? Newell: Don’t push it.
Yes because valve is going to fuck over 90% of their userbase because they "hate windows 8."
Half-Life 3 for Windows would be finished right now if I did not make that choice.
B-but...why? WHY?
I don't feel he cares about players if he's going to make it exclusive to a platform many don't use.
This is a joke right?
But I don't want to use linux.
Yeah, very funny Gabe.
If this isn't bull I'll eat a hat. Not like TF2 didn't supply me with any.
B-but...why? WHY?
I know, I cried when I read that.
Hahahaha, come on this one can't be real. I really love linux but come on really..
Do you actually believe he's serious? Come on. It's just Gabe being Gabe.
In fact, we had to restart development when I made the decision to move to Linux. Half-Life 3 for Windows would be finished right now if I did not make that choice.
well shit gabe
Except ofcourse the fact that he wasn't even there.
What the fuck So now just because Windows 8 does not provide as much freedom, suddenly all the other Windows OS are evil?
He does have a point saying that this will start the revolution and I can feel how he backed away from windows 8, but what about win 7? It's not like noone is using it anymore and everybody is switching to 8. Although I bet he's shitting us, come on. Such a thing suddenly out of the blue?
You all know there's going to be a retarded group of few that takes this seriously and attempts to "boycott" steam, or will refuse to buy anything that comes from valve.
Guess I'll just get used to dual booting to HL3
sounds like Gabe just fucking around
GABE's joking
If that actually happens (highly unlikely) then I just won't play it, not switching OS's for a game haha
Where is the fucking Onion logo?!!! If they are serious I don't know what to think. They started to release their games on more platforms, consoles to be precise, only to go exclusive with their most anticipated game?
oh god if this was real I'd enjoy the fireworks
In fact, you can take everything from the moment he mentions Half-Life 3 with a grain of salt considering how secretive Valve is about it. Think about it. Has anyone from Valve ever talked about HL3/EP3 in a serious fashion IF they even talk about it at all?
If Gabe does this, I will love him forever.
Do you actually believe he's serious? Come on. It's just Gabe being Gabe.
Fucking troll
wat
Guess I'll just get used to dual booting to HL3
Next up: Half-life 3 to become it's own operating system.
If Gabe does this, I will love him forever.
Making a game exclusive to a platform most players don't use isn't a good thing. It's not real, but nonetheless.
In other news, Halo 4 has been canceled, and Reggie Fils-Aime votes for Romney. Those are indeed dark times.
When they do release half life 3 we need to make it their best selling title ever made so that they'll focus development on half life 4
