Can be stop trying to make this a gun rights issue. Shit, nothing on the books would even stop this. Literally nothing you pass would stop this. Stop trying to because you now look like idiots. With that said, guy who had the bullet stopped by books is lucky as hell.
That guy posted a few pictures on reddit of the books and the bullets they stopped a bit ago, I guess putting armor in backpacks isn't such a bad idea after all.
This is a picture of the shooter.

Apparently NY Daily News blurred the face for whatever reason but here's a pic someone on /k/ found.

Yes it is. Standard body armor that law enforcement uses isnt light, flexible, or strong enough to put into backpacks. We'd have to get some new form of armor for it to be feasible.
No one wants a 30lb backpack (loaded). Good idea on paper, but it would be horrid in practice.

So you're telling me the companies that sell bullet proof clothing can't make a bullet proof backpack?

Seriously, just weave the backpack out of kevlar if you want.

He's dead Jim.
I was talking to my sister when she was walking back to her dorms and we both heard muffled pops (I don't know how close she was, but if I could hear it through the phone...then she was pretty damn close, even if she was outside)
..and we honestly didn't think anything of it and just continued on our conversation until she had to get going because of an "active shooter" message that was sent to her phone. I managed to get a hold of her a few hours ago once I found out what happened, and we were just in shock...she was leaving a friends dorm and just passed by the library. Like what if the shooter was outside? There's just so many "what ifs" that it even frightened me quite a bit.
Just checked out his Facebook profile. Pretty creepy guy, lotta scripture verses, plus he believed in some pretty crazy theories.

bless her and everyone else who survived the shooting, man.

actually entirely wrong since most use level 2 or 3a vests which are light and flexible af and defeat threats up to .44
no one in le is going around in 30lb plate carriers on patrol. everyone uses 3a or 2 and backpack armor inserts do in fact exist and have for years
[editline]20th November 2014[/editline]
and they're incredibly cheap and readily available for civilian use like www.ar500armor.com

and don't say shit about the site because their armor is all over the civillian market and it's been tested over and over and proven to be effective
[editline]20th November 2014[/editline]
their steel plates are 8lbs (not 30) and will defeat threats up to .308
they're only rated to sustain one hit but their plates have been tested taking hundreds of rounds and still being intact (however the anti spalling coating only lasts 2-4 shots but no ones getting shot that much)
woooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo time to debate about gun laws guys
Yeah, holy shit. I was across the street when this happened (I do not attend FSU as a student however, was with a friend who lives across the street and was helping them study).
I was terrified. My parents were both officers in Miami and Tallahassee for a brief while and I've heard stories about gunfights, but wow. You could hear that clearly and easily from the dorm.
A lot of my friends from high school do attend FSU (I've lived in Tallahassee for ages now) and thankfully they're all OK.
Just heard about this on Facebook. A few of my semi-friends apparently attend there. They're all ok, but yikes, that's scary.

Damn.
Hold up, that's pretty clearly wrong, if you're going by homicide rate.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_firearm-related_death_rate
If you're going by pure number of deaths, then it shouldn't be very surprising that a country the size of the US, with roughly half the population of every European nation combined, would have a high absolute number of deaths. The 'only country in the world with this problem' claim is wrong too, but shootings in, for example, South Africa don't exactly get the same press coverage as shootings in the US, and are proportionally rarer because, again, lower population.
There are plenty of arguments to be made without resorting to tired, factually incorrect rhetoric.
From what I can tell (from somewhat but not heavily following the coverage of these "random" assaults), the problem is more that the availability of guns makes them much more deadly.
Someone with a knife can still attack a significant amount of people, but unless they know relatively well what they are doing they'll have trouble killing many of them.
(This is based on those mass stabbing reports from China that were posted here in SH a while ago, where there seem to be upwards of a dozen victims but often very few or no people killed.)
