The police union is already declaring themselves a "wartime police department". Oh, and they seem to think Bill DeBlasio personally shot those two officers.
“The mayor’s hands are literally dripping with our blood because of his words actions and policies and we have, for the first time in a number of years, become a ‘wartime’ police department. We will act accordingly.”
The NYPD is not an army, and they are not at war. The entire reason people are protesting is because they feel like the NYPD behaves like an occupying army, not a police department. Telling your officers they are now at war (with who? Everybody?) is the worst possible response. That mentality is only going to lead to more unwarranted shootings.
And all because some lunatic decided to take his problems out on a couple of cops sitting in a car that probably had nothing to do with anything.

People protest the police: yea, fuck them! We need change!
Police protest the brass and politicians: Shame on them for doing this! Its not their fault that this happened.
Police officers didnt even face the mayor as he entered the press conference. The mayors endorsement of the protesters puts the blood on his hands.
Yeah great.
I'm going to NYC soon, and I'm really looking forward to the gunfights on Times Square between cops and idiots/gangmembers.
nyc is the safest city in america, calm your shit

you mean one guy kills two cops and the police union decides that theyre going to cut efficiency to 50% as a punishment. the police dislike being called out on being racists pigs, the mayor doesn't support them and now the blood is on his hands? youre incredibly deluded.

Two officers gets no indictment and suddenly the world starts burning?
15 officers died since Brown and nothing has happened in law enforcement. These two make it 17. NYPD was already mad with politics. The mayor and his actions poured fuel on the fire.
Whoa, a guy was selling untaxed cigarettes! Even though he didn't have any in his car at the time of his death? No way! What a terrible violent criminal! He deserved to die - good job, coppers!
What the fuck is a warrent
If I have a warrent on me for something, and I happen to not be committing the act at the time, that gives me the right to resist arrest :downs:

17 what? NYPD?

No, it does not.
Protesters =/= guy who shot two cops.
17 what? NYPD?

15 officers across the country have died since Michael brown. These two NYPD officers make it 17. Not 17 NYPD officers.

According to this:
http://www.nleomf.org/facts/officer-fatalities-data/year.html
100 officers died in the USA in the year 2013, so if we were following previous trends more than 40 would be dead since Brown's killing.
Can you prove that any of the other 15 were retaliation to Michael Brown's death? Because right this seems like a purely reactionary response and just fuelling the paranoia.
Let's get real, this is a heavy handed response.

42 have died since September. 14 have been from gunfire. These two make it 16 from gunfire.
Current stats from ODMP.
NYPD stood there, took the protesters bullshit hands-up dont-shoot movement, constant harassment, death threats, and yet did nothing against those protesters. Now they get rewarded by two executions in the name of Michael Brown and Eric Garner. This is fucking sham of a country.
[editline]20th December 2014[/editline]
I would venture and say that no white house representatives are going to be sent to these two officer's funerals. The mayor would be better off not showing his face either.

how are they being rewarded by dead police? this goes against what the protesters want. the protestors want the police to stop being racist and for there to be more police transparency/accountability. not for police to die, jesus christ.
no health system could have prevented this. This man was not mentally ill. He knew what he was doing and was glad he was doing it. You can argue it all you want, but this man consciously knew the rights, wrongs, and punishment for his actions.
Of course it could have helped. There are better ways to support a cause than killing and dying for it, and if he had gotten help beforehand he could have been convinced to not want to die for anything.

So just assuming that more officers are dying than normal, and that they're dying because of Brown/Garner supporters (something you still haven't supported), what do you propose?
Arrest peaceful protesters? That will just lead to more hostility. Predict the future and arrest people before they shoot someone? We can't do that.
As the son of a police officer, (who works a fairly large city), My heart really goes out to the families and friends of the two officers. I could possibly imagine losing my father to natural causes, let alone being shot in the head by some scumbag who thought he was the new superman. my heart also goes out to the families of Micheal Brown and Eric Garner, (at least, the sane ones.) Criminal or hero, they've lost someone close to them, and I respect that.
But killing two innocent police officers is not the way to remember them.

The two cops are now deceased.

They're not even the "White Racist Pigs" that these ignorant assholes hate, what a fucked up guy to just murder them for deciding to get a job for protecting people.
I feel really bad for their families, it's going to be shit knowing they died because one psycho decided all cops are evil.

I propose that every single one of those protesters goes through the academy and becomes a cop. Thats what I propose. You want change? Be the change.
Being warriors of keyboards doesnt fix a fucking thing. Two officers dont get indictments (by a jury have you) and the world goes crazy. 45 officers have died in the same time frame (not including august). 16 to gun fire alone. No one bats an eye. No one protests.
Under supported. Under funded. Overworked. Mayor of NYC through the entire department under the bus following Garner, aligning himself with Al Sharpton, saying how hes scared for his children when they're in contact with the police.
Two officers, one rookie and the other recently married, lost their lives today not because they precipitated it, but for the sole purpose of the shirt that they wore.
how are they being rewarded by dead police? this goes against what the protesters want.
I dunno last weekend they chanted for dead cops and the shooter is getting loads of support for making sure two cops "can't breathe" any longer.

well then these people are dumber than i thought, what else is there to say? the point still stands that the original movement was about fixing the justice system.

Not everyone is accepted. Not everyone wants to be a cop. I don't need to be a chef to know when food tastes bad. I don't need to be a politician to vote. Nobody needs to be a cop to speak out against a corrupt police force.

This person who shot these cops is dead. Rioters are arrested. A cop kills someone, not even a trial. If I shot someone who was unarmed and claimed self defense, they'd never take my word for it. I'd go to court. Ever heard of Rule of Law? It doesn't seem to apply to the police, that's for sure.

Well the original movement is fucked now. Good luck protesting with two dead cops behind it.

Yeah and rule of law felt that the officers were within their scope of practice. You're acting like they just got bored and shot a black boy dead for no reason and didn't have anything pinned against them. The RULE OF LAW chose not to indict these cops.

Not everyone can become president too, but it seems that they always know how to fix whats broken -- none of which actually gets fixed. Its the same shit over and over like a broken record. Everyone monday night quarterbacks and nitpicks. Stop talking change and start being change.

Twice a jury of peers from within the city finds that the officers' actions were within the law. You can blame everything you got on the cops, but its the jury that twice now let you down.
That is the rule of law.

A group of people protesting (and voting) can enact more change than that same group of people attempting to join the police force and having maybe 10% make it through. A 10% that are probably going to get caught up in the "thin blue line" bullshit like so many other aspiring officers with lofty dreams of making the world better, mind you.

Grand juries almost always indict. It's something like 99% of the time. Except when it's a cop.
Just shows how far 'within the law' the officers were.

"Starting IMMEDIATELY: At least two units are to respond to EVERY call, no matter the condition or severity, no matter what type of job is pending, or what the opinion of the patrol supervisor happens to be.
“IN ADDITION: Absolutely NO enforcement action in the form of arrests and or summonses is to be taken unless absolutely necessary and an individual MUST be placed under arrest.
These don't really seem like bad things. A department has to react when their officers are being assassinated. "Wartime" seems to be used in a different context here.
That said, the statement about the mayor is over the top and completely unnecessary but expecting decorum from the head of a police union is unrealistic.
-snip-
How does one make an instagram post about murdering people (let alone for something they weren't even held personally responsible for) and unironically use emojis

I'll leave it at this. Its not 10%. Its not 5%. Its at-great odds, 2%. Most odds? 1% or less. You want to see more change? Give the departments some more money. They're only hiring to replace those retiring. Theres a lot of talent and brainpower waiting to enter the workforce, but officers that have been policing since the 80s are still on the streets. Officers who are not the good cops they used to be; not because they're bad cops, but because society has changed.

Pretty much this, no body gives a fuck about public safety. But at the same time they want officers and departments to be these superheros that can do everything.
Want better quality officers? Well departments are going to need more money - Training, equipping, and supporting is a start. Want departments to have body cams? Be ready to pay more taxes.
Again people want something for nothing.
holy fuck what a pathetic series of posts code3. 1 nutcase kills 2 cops and all of a sudden this movement & the mayor has blood on their hands? and yet of course when TRAINED police officers kill someone or racially profile or target blacks unfairly it's always a bad apple and never indictative of the police force.
