Holy crap. Now that's what I call science.
I vaguely remember a Michael Crichton book that dealt with time travel, and I think it basically said the same thing as this. The universe won't let you make a paradox: if you try to kill your grandfather, your gun will jam, someone will see you and stop you, or the time machine will break, etc.
Reminds me of CERN scientists and them saying that the CERN in the future is interfering with the one in the present so as to not find the higgs boson since it is abhorrent of nature. Parallel streams of research...anyone? MAYBE the higgs boson is actually the boson of TIME.
What a good read, I love this kind of stuff.
This is interesting... What practical applications would this potentially have?
Free wifi from the past AND THE FUTURE transmit data to the past ? or to the future?
Uhm, can someone explain to me how the hell the laws of physics allow time to move backwards?
Time is just another dimension.
Slowmotion is happening all the time and easy to do. Just saying.
Great scott!
This is heavy.

Is it me or we've been making a fuck-ton of scientific things happen this month
So p. much what you're telling me is if my life ever became really really fucking shit, and I tried to off myself, it would just never work and I'd end up potentially physically maimed for life? Swell. [editline]22nd November 2010[/editline] Or have I misunderstood this and I would die but continue existing in another reality? [editline]22nd November 2010[/editline] this is like brainfreeze without the freeze fuck
That'd be interesting, you don't die, you just go to another universe whenever you ALMOST die Don't know how old age works though, maybe you live on forever in another universe
Uhm, can someone explain to me how the hell the laws of physics allow time to move backwards?
Okay, first you take entropy... ... and you tell it to go fuck itself and do what you want instead.
Things like this are so cool, but make me feel like such an idiot since I can barely understand any of it.
My mind is all twisted now.
Well this is sad.
Wouldn't the grandfather paradox just create a new dimension or multiverse or something when you kill your grandfather, and your grandfather exists in another reality?
And here I was thinking we already knew how this shit was supposed to work, but apparently it takes some important dudes and a paper for it to be taken seriously :(
Ok, so did they watch this particle change state before their eyes from an experiment they did later in time? Also, imagine quantum entangelment RAM. Your computer knows what it has to do before it even happens.

I don't think time travel will ever be possible for the simple reason, "We don't know if it's really possible". Think about it for a second. If traveling back in time was possible, then we would already know. There is no way we would not have noticed time travelers if time traveling was possible, there is no way time traveling could not have made a very noticeable impact in the world. Therefor time traveling back in time will never be possible, because we would know if it was possible by now.
Uhm, can someone explain to me how the hell the laws of physics allow time to move backwards?
Physics works in both time directions the same. Example: Either you calculate how a stone with a certain velocity and position moves "forward" by using "positive time" or you negate the sign of time and you see how the stone behaved in the past. But the second case is exactly the movement into the past. Since this applies for all physical theories, timetravel is not forbidden. [editline]23rd November 2010[/editline]
Okay, first you take entropy... ... and you tell it to go fuck itself and do what you want instead.
The increase of entropy in a closed thermodynamical system is only a postulate and is often used to explain why we experience time moving "forward". Still, all physical "rules" work in both time-direction. They do not care about the sign of time. That's why time-travel is not forbidden in respect to current knowledge. [editline]23rd November 2010[/editline]
I don't think time travel will ever be possible for the simple reason, "We don't know if it's really possible". Think about it for a second.
Think about what you wrote... If we don't know, if it is possible or not, who are you to say that it's impossible? Physical "laws" do not forbid timetravel. Unless someone finds a good reason (not in words - real physics, math etc), why it is impossible, the possibility for it being possible exists.
If traveling back in time was possible, then we would already know. There is no way we would not have noticed time travelers if time traveling was possible, there is no way time traveling could not have made a very noticeable impact in the world.
What if we never reach a state where we can do time-travel, or if we never find out how to achieve it (while it still is possible)? And what if the time-travellers are simply really well cloaked? Your argument is none.
TLDR: Two entangled photons share the same existence, something happens to one, it happens to the other. Photons don't follow the normal conventions of time. By using these two properties its potentially possible to send information across time. They tested the grandfather paradox by setting up a simulation of a photon going back in time to kill itself with a gun, each having a potential to fail. When the teleportation failed, the gun went off, but when it did teleport the gun would never fire. So essentially if time travel were ever possible and you went to kill your grandfather, something would go wrong. Could be the gun, could be you just cant fire it, you miss, etc. Thats my understanding of it anyway :)
TL;DR :psyduck: [editline]23rd November 2010[/editline] but seriously we are getting close to proving soo many things in science, this is great :buddy:
I think it means, you can time travel as much as you want, as long as you don't fuck shit up(like in changing the future, if you do so, you simply won't be able to time travel) But if that is what they meant, it raises another paradox i time travel, therefore i will not change the future, what if, knowing that, then i change the future?
You change something by just appearing in another time, it works by universes.
Swamp Gas covering up the secret of Time Travel, Patented by the U.S Government. In all seriousness great read, nothing better then to read a physics article.
Time travel backwards is impossible because of radiation feedback. Any other device of disproving it is unnecessary.
