Because people can't sleep soundly with nuclear power plants wizzing around above their heads,
Now dont go calling me an idiot or saying something like that is just a TV show. If you have ever watched Star Trek, when the Warp Core goes critical or is about to explode, they shoot the damn thing out of the ship and jettison it into space. You could easily build a backup system into a large enough ship to get it back home or on its course to home. You could technically build the main powering station around nuclear energy and if that fails use our older technology of Gas propellants. There is nothing to be worried about if you build in the proper safety features and no one on Earth would be harmed.
uh...no
uh...yes where do you think engineers and other imaginitive types come from general public who do you think they influence general public good god, it's like talking to a brick

That is why Star Trek, as you brilliantly pointed out, uses handwavium. Hell we can't even invent a safe car.

Its greed like this that holds back the human race from achieving what is possible in our current state of technology. The system is not complex and has been demonstrated before in our technology. When you launch a Orbiter into space you use Excess propellant, which is later dropped off of the ship. This simple yet effective means of propulsion works. I see no reason why you could not use such a simple way and build it into the Space craft using Nuclear technology. Basing these drop off mechanisms into a built in safety feature would work.

Are you suggesting we drop Nuclear Thrusters once we use them?

I would seriously doubt the power output of a nuclear plant would be feasible for reaching further than mars.

Perhaps. But the amount of radiation shielding needed for a crewed ship will really eat into the mass budget.
You both did not understand what I said. I said you use this technology, but NOT IN DROPPING RADIOACTIVE MATERIAL ABOVE THE EARTH. In the construction process of the ship you would build separate chambers storing the excess propellant, WHICH IS EXPENSIVE I KNOW, this excess propellant would be what we currently use to control space shuttles. YOU WOULD NOT CONSTRUCT THIS SHIP ON EARTH, you would need to do this in the upper atmosphere. Once the base is done and you have the backup reserves finished, you would begin construction on the Nuclear Generator, this part would use the same simple technology as I stated above to release the generator if it ever went critical and endangered the crew. THIS WOULD BE IN SPACE! Once the Critical core is launched out of the ship it would drift away into space, leaving the crew with the gas propellant to begin the long journey home. I do see a few issues, such as if this happened above the earth. This is possible to do and we could do it with todays technology, the only issue is paying for it.
A simple solution to our problems relating to the Nuclear Core is to have an advanced Artificial Intelligence control it, such as the Heuristically programmed ALgorithmic computer. Guaranteed to open the Pod Bay Doors!
Well maybe in 50 years when we get some kick ass Quantum Computers.
[sarcasm]Well...Isn't the earth flat?[/sarcasm]
sorry for the bump but, have any of you seen this? i dont think this shit is fake
Yeah it's real. Also called WASP. Tinfoil hats can be removed now.
in the videos, there is no tin.. its simply an outline of a persons body.. there is also videos of it walking in the air.
That guy that comes in at 2:28 talks REALLY... REALLY FAST... I mean I thought I talked fast, but he just takes the motherfucking cake.
We're aliens to aliens!
It would be impossible for aliens to get to earth.
Why is that booster
2006.
It would be impossible for aliens to get to earth.
Not impossible but it might as well be when you consider the odds of it happening.
HAHAHA. NO COMRADE. THIS IS LIE NEWS. YOU READ GREAT TRUTH. :ussr: http://english.pravda.ru/society/anomal/106764-soviet_ufo-0
The cosmonaut said that he once saw a strange object on Earth’s orbit. He asked his partner, Viktor Savinykh, to fetch a camera. While Savinykh was trying to find the camera, the object exploded in front of Kovalenok’s eyes.
Aliens are committing suicide to hide the truth. I will find out the truth. I want to believe.
It would be impossible for aliens to get to earth.
Says the guy with the Crysis avatar.
He's old and slowly going insane.
Says the guy with the Crysis avatar.
That's from the comic version of Wanted...
Were closer to MULTIVERSAL TRAVEL THEN WE ARE TO INTERSTELLAR TRAVAL.(And multiversal travel is still VERY far away.) The only two viable ways of space travel would be wormholes or a combination of near speed of light travel combined with cryogenics.
Sweet man. :D
This is how it's going to happen... I was ballshocked by how realistic this was. Watch the whole thing: http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=4C02EF7760313689
