I do wonder why people think that Elop killed Nokia. Yeah, he did kill Meego and all, but AFAIK it wasn't ready, and had even less apps than Windows Phone.

I tried MeeGo on the N9, and really, it was a beautiful OS and very intuitive. I'm really sad that they killed it off.
I do think Elop was there to make this kind of a deal, but he's definitely one of the more likeable people I could see as CEO of Microsoft.
what actually killed Nokia is that they didn't see the iPhone as a threat
If anything Android killed more Nokia than the iPhone.
Nokia sales we're in a constant steady and healthy grow in 2010, years after the iPhone.
Nokia's decline started after the after Android's massive grow with the Galaxy S and Elop stated in that memo that Nokia's phones we're shit and the first non-shit Nokia smartphone would only be released 1 year and a half later, which made all carriers around the world drop Nokia for Android Phones.
Elop sabotaged every single Nokia phone up to the release of the Lumia 900, fuck he said before the N9 launch party that the phone was dead on arrival.

except it actually was? It had no apps, very little carriers sold the phone, meego was underdeveloped and had no future in Nokia.
I do think the sale of Nokia to Microsoft is a bit rushed perhaps? I mean, all things considered, Nokia was still in a better position than say, Motorola at the time they were sold to Google and I do think they had great potential as an independent company with their Windows Phone lineup.
Right as I buy my first Lumia too, I'm pleased
Well, so much for Europe's presence in the mobile phone industry.
I'm one of Nokia's biggest supporters with their windows phones. they make some cracking kit and are the only company to make a decent WP7/8 so far.
Microsoft buying them out is going to end badly, they'll be shredded as soon as they can afford to do it and we'll end up with "Nokia Washington" or some shit.

It was compatible with Symbian apps, which at the time Ovi was a bigger app store than the Windows Phone store and had no carrier support because Nokia refused to give it a bigger launch and a future.
But that's not the point, even if it's true and the N9 was the biggest junk, as a CEO you never ever EVER say that the brand new phone that you are releasing is garbage and DOA, especially when your next big phone is only going to be release 1 full year later. That's just incompetent.
I mean you can disagree with the N9/MeeGo strategy, but how do you defend having a CEO of a company declaring all it's current and near future product as junk?
Whelp there goes all hope of an android lumia
Considering they've said multiple times that they don't want to become just another android OEM which are a dime a dozen, there was little to no hope before this either.

The thing that killed the n9 was Nokias department structure and it killed it long before they settled on WP. Remember that as a rule Nokia tended to have multiple departments directly competing with each other. The symbian department hated meego\harmattan and did their best to keep killing it over and over again which they inevitably succeeded. The fact was though, that nokia was hemorhagging symbian device sales massively already at that time.

Their US presence was always pitiful and the majority of their sales were in the budget nonsmartphone categories all over the world. Very little changed for nokia with the announcement since it was already on a massive downward spiral before that.
I don't really think Microsoft is just going to destroy them as everyone thinks they are. I would be more skeptical however Ballmer's on his way out so it doesn't necessarily have to be a bad thing for Microsoft to have its own hardware to work with to make WP better.
I know some people hoped for a Nokia with Android on it, however they already stated they weren't going to do that, and this doesn't really change anything.
As an owner of a Nokia Lumia, I have no real feelings one way or the other, Nokia's devices and services division still exists and is still headed by Stephen Elop, so it's not dramatically different than before.
In related news, Nokia's stock jumped 35%
:v:

Honestly I'm not all that worried considering that MS does have fairly consistently good hardware. The surface was really well crafted, the zune was incredibly well done (marketing was a different story), the kin was actually pretty cool too and their peripherals from mice to keyboards tend to be topnotch as well.
Their biggest hardware failing was the RROD and even with that the console was still pretty impressive.
I could see them adopting the Lumia line as their smartphone version of the surface brand.
Elop was a shill all along.

Microsoft marketing has always been shit, they need to fire the entire department.
The original Surface teaser was an awesome advertisement, then they come out with the obnoxious 'click-in' bullshit that makes you want to perforate your eardrums.
Ballmer has confirmed (kind off) that Stephen Elop is a candidate for the new CEO of Microsoft. Elop seems like a good guy, and I don't think he'll just throw away what Nokia has done (and been doing) while he was CEO there.
Actually kinda hoping for Elop being the new CEO of Microsoft.
Yeah if Elop was CEO of MS, that would be fucking amazing
And would likely mean MS puts a much stronger and better push on their mobile platforms, and just anything involving devices in general (xbox, surface, etc).
So this means that Windows Phones will now even be more like iPhones where the hardware and software are made by the same company with each other in mind. Fine by me, I only buy phones where the hardware and software are from the same company.

Do you also not download third party apps?

It will definitely be a boon to have Elop control both the software and the hardware in Nokia phones

MeeGo got killed pretty quickly, it didn't really have a chance to prove itself, but funnily enough still lives on in Mer and Tizen (Tizen being a joint development between Intel and Samsung)
People are going to keep lumping thrown away unix based phone OS side projects together until it becomes a horrible frankenstein's monster of mobile OS's. In 5 years Tizen (Tizen being Meego and a couple other things) and Mer will be merged with Ubuntu and Symbian and Blackberry.
