Statistically, you're STILL safer flying than driving.
Actually I've read multiple times that the statistic for air travel related deaths vs cars is usually skewed as it's measured in deaths per X km traveled. When you find a statistic that measures deaths per hour of journey time, they're much closer.
Found this:

i thought it was measured in accidents/total flights
I'm sorry for any worry/distress I caused anyone who's flying/has relatives flying. It's how I cope, making jokes about it.
Funnily enough, despite being terrified of flying, I was actually going to be a pilot at one point.

As one user said, count on statistics, not the old isolated incidences.
I read whilst I'm on the plane, and it helps out a lot - more than you can believe. You start to not care about the turbulence, and you're engrossed by the book.
Luckily I'm taking 101 greatest air disasters the annual this year!
[sp] i'm kidding[/sp]
But I often reflect on statistics to calm my nerves. After so many incidents this year, what are the chances there'll be another one? With me on board? Pretty slim.
Technically the risk is about the same if we consider the events independent, unless the crashes somehow affected the statistics (which is probably hard to know)

I mean, you'll be fine :)
why was a civilian plane flying through a cat 2 hurricane?
how many of the people on those planes said that though
im flying in 3 fucking weeks
I'm flying friday @ 3AM, and I'm quite worried, but I know it'll be fine.
I never got nervous flying on airplanes, I mean of course the thought crosses my mind that this might be my time but I think out of the many ways to die I wouldn't mind it being from a plane crash. I can't imagine you would feel much pain depending on the crash, although it was be a death full of fear. Granted I would be the lucky son of a bitch who would be crashed into the ocean and drown because my seat belt wouldn't unbuckle...

to be fair, if it hit the ocean full speed, you wouldn't have much of a chance, anyway.

Depends on if the pilot has control or not, I think if you were lucky enough you could skim the surface and try to lose and much speed as possible before it digs in. Now if a wing sheers off and you are plummeting into the water well yeah you are screwed.
I just got back from DC and I didn't die :v:
To be honest wouldn't you rather go on an airline with things like this because statistically they've hit their "quota"? I mean, if you want to bring statistics into this and all :zoid:
And CNN doesn't help the situation of availability heuristics
All these plane crashes has me worried for my grandmother who is flying down to visit us for Christmas.

Tell her to be careful when flying over all the armed Russian separatists in Wyoming.
It is awful knowing that someone you knew died in accidents like this.
The plane crashed in the night when the typhoon just arrived in Taiwan.
The news here now is all about the victims' life and family.
One of the victims was a bus driver, he was really a nice man.
I liked to be on his bus, it felt really safe.
But now he's gone, students are spamming all over his facebook wall about how their gonna miss him, I will miss him.
Gee I hope I don't have to fly with Malaysian Airlines this year.
Not their fault but sometimes you just can't get over paranoia
