Because its useful?
Granted, its useful primarily as a way to issue commands hands free in my car, but OS integration would be nice too (if less useful on desktop setups that don't have active microphones on 24/7). Its nice to be able to type out on my phone "remind me to X Y or Z in 20 minutes" and have it work among a bunch of other stuff. Potentially cool stuff would be to tell it to automatically shut down the computer after X amount of time, etc.
It makes more sense on the phone for sure but its nice to also have on windows itself I think. What would be ace is if they got full wolfram alpha among other services integrated it so you can just ask it generic questions and have it pop up the answer right there in the little search bar vs needing to open a browser and google for it.

I reckon it's a placeholder in its current form anyway. I saw someone speculate that its gonna be a button until you click it, then it expands to the textbox which could be neat.

If it's a different OS entirely, then why has 10 been built up with "Mobile First, Cloud First" in mind.
Being a comprehensive system, it's designed to work for a range of devices, each optimised to their own technical limitations, with windows phone lacking the desktop interface

I don't want her randomly popping up while I'm gaming. Same reason I rip the windows shortcut key off my keyboard. I accidentally trigger that thing while crouching all the time if that key remains in place, who's to say I won't accidentally trigger Cortana if I'm playing a game and talking over voice? I play games that don't alt-tab very well. Having Cortana randomly alt-tab those games for nothing will be mighty annoying.

Popping of the key caps from cheaper keyboards could snap the clips on the keycaps. I managed it when I used to pop the WIndows key off too.
But then I obtained some form of eye-hand coordination and it stopped being a problem.

My keyboards last just fine. The one I'm using now is four or five years old and has spent every day of that without the windows key on it.

i still don't really understand how bringing a product line together is great and dandy when your favorite manufacturers do it but as soon as microsoft wants to integrate its products into one program rather than having a scattered fucking deck like everything they've put out as a software add-on since the 9x OS's, they become worse than hitler

RoboChimp is pretty darn conservative when it comes to hardware.
Personally, I hope touchscreens become even more commonplace, especially with the largely crap touchpads on the Windows side of things.
