Why would anyone want this?
Because its useful? Granted, its useful primarily as a way to issue commands hands free in my car, but OS integration would be nice too (if less useful on desktop setups that don't have active microphones on 24/7). Its nice to be able to type out on my phone "remind me to X Y or Z in 20 minutes" and have it work among a bunch of other stuff. Potentially cool stuff would be to tell it to automatically shut down the computer after X amount of time, etc. It makes more sense on the phone for sure but its nice to also have on windows itself I think. What would be ace is if they got full wolfram alpha among other services integrated it so you can just ask it generic questions and have it pop up the answer right there in the little search bar vs needing to open a browser and google for it.
I don't like how it takes up 15% of the task bar.
Its optional at the moment. You can change it to a button. I reckon it's a placeholder in its current form anyway. I saw someone speculate that its gonna be a button until you click it, then it expands to the textbox which could be neat.
continuity between platforms does not mean they're going to have the same OS
Doesn't mean it's not Windows 10 Which you said it won't be
Doesn't mean it's not Windows 10 Which you said it won't be
it still won't be. it will be branded with the windows 10 moniker much like previous windows phone iterations, but it is still a different OS entirely
Still can't get over the name Windows Ten.
it still won't be. it will be branded with the windows 10 moniker much like previous windows phone iterations, but it is still a different OS entirely
If it's a different OS entirely, then why has 10 been built up with "Mobile First, Cloud First" in mind. Being a comprehensive system, it's designed to work for a range of devices, each optimised to their own technical limitations, with windows phone lacking the desktop interface [editline]15th December 2014[/editline]
Still can't get over the name Windows Ten.
Rumour was they were going to drop numbers entirely, That would have been worse
Why have an option to disable cortana when the only place she'll be in is search
I don't want her randomly popping up while I'm gaming. Same reason I rip the windows shortcut key off my keyboard. I accidentally trigger that thing while crouching all the time if that key remains in place, who's to say I won't accidentally trigger Cortana if I'm playing a game and talking over voice? I play games that don't alt-tab very well. Having Cortana randomly alt-tab those games for nothing will be mighty annoying.
Unpin search from the taskbar, congratulations you disabled it
Which happens anyway when I flick the advanced 'high tech' aero interface off in favor of the W98 UI. Still, I don't think that'll truly turn her off, and my concern is more 'She might trigger while I'm playing a game that doesn't alt tab very well and crash said game' than 'she's cluttering the taskbar'.
I don't want her randomly popping up while I'm gaming. Same reason I rip the windows shortcut key off my keyboard.
Jesus, please don't do this you can disable it easy if you Google.
Jesus, please don't do this you can disable it easy if you Google.
Mind telling me why someone you'll never meet popping their windows key off their keyboard so it doesn't accidentally alt-tab their game offends you so much that you need to post that? I don't see how my method in any way effects you.
Mind telling me why someone you'll never meet popping their windows key off their keyboard so it doesn't accidentally alt-tab their game offends you so much that you need to post that?
This was cool when they put her on Windows phone. Now they're just trying to lure people to buy Windows 10.
Well they've caught me. I am a huge Halo nerd so...
You don't have to pop off a key if you can do it in an easy way. I care about your keyboard.
It's not like you're breaking the keyboard, just pop it back in when you need it
It's not like you're breaking the keyboard, just pop it back in when you need it
Popping of the key caps from cheaper keyboards could snap the clips on the keycaps. I managed it when I used to pop the WIndows key off too. But then I obtained some form of eye-hand coordination and it stopped being a problem.
You don't have to pop off a key if you can do it in an easy way.
What's easier, five seconds with the screwdriver that's always on my desk or five minutes faffing about in the control panel?
I care about your keyboard.
My keyboards last just fine. The one I'm using now is four or five years old and has spent every day of that without the windows key on it. You are aware that keyboard keys are designed to pop off for cleaning, right? And that if I want to I can pop that key back in and it'd be like I never removed it, right?
is microsoft any better with speech recognition than in the past?
I'm using window speech recognition point to the Norman This is a my windows opt I mean my window was eight PC I'm speaking dinner in the English accent moment is considered quite posh woman Advise begin my normal accent this is what happens The withdrawal for them to had no dog The <--- I said that the quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog
This was cool when they put her on Windows phone. Now they're just trying to lure people to buy Windows 10.
How dare Microsoft make a competent OS attractive to the masses.
More gimmick technology which is useless to me.
good to see microsoft is still insistent on keeping the vista install UI and decade old icons
it's the third build of the OS and you want to ask why microsoft hasn't gotten around to changing the preinstallation UI? lmao it gets used for maybe five minutes and then you never see it again, if it ain't broke why go back and fuck it up and make it all metro-y? what is the point? you tell me. [editline]15th December 2014[/editline] i still don't really understand how bringing a product line together is great and dandy when your favorite manufacturers do it but as soon as microsoft wants to integrate its products into one program rather than having a scattered fucking deck like everything they've put out as a software add-on since the 9x OS's, they become worse than hitler
I wonder if they did it just so they can say Halo is on Windows 10.
More gimmick technology which is useless to me.
Useless to you ≠ gimmick I've been using Cortana since the dev preview came out, and it's fantastic. Putting it on Windows' main platform is just a given. [editline]15th December 2014[/editline]
I wonder if they did it just so they can say Halo is on Windows 10.
That'd be like expecting Halo being ported to Windows Phone. Cortana has existed since early this year, they're only showing integration with desktop/tablet environments, now.

[sp]It's a joke based on that Halo mouse[/sp]
[sp]It's a joke based on that Halo mouse[/sp]
Totally went over my head. Sorry!

And still Cortana is probably going to work only in the English version of Windows 10. Fuck you other languages. The Vista voice recognition was also disabled for me. It's not that I really need it, but it's not a selling point for me.

I hope no more tablet shit
I hope no more tablet shit
Metro apps are now windows and seem to behave like other windows so I guess we're safe
It's as useless as touchscreens and 3DTV and look what happened to those.
What? Touchscreens are a gimmick? What do you mean look what happened to them, they're everywhere.
What? Touchscreens are a gimmick? What do you mean look what happened to them, they're everywhere.
RoboChimp is pretty darn conservative when it comes to hardware. Personally, I hope touchscreens become even more commonplace, especially with the largely crap touchpads on the Windows side of things.
