Underweight models could go to prison under French proposals

Like France needs more of an excuse to be awful.
As if being French wasn't bad enough.
Yeah, overweight models is such a problem in society.
Overweight people are. Last thing you want is to glorify it. It's not a problem - yet. The way things are going now, this might just become an issue in the near future, standards tend to shift a bit.
Though prison/fines is not just a bit excessive, it's insane.
This is stupid as fuck. The smart thing to do here would be to fine or ban the use of underweight models by companies. Companies should be the ones answering for it. The only interaction I can think of that needs to be with the actual models is protection from exploitation like that or provided with services to help treat eating disorders or something.

That is actually what this bill is doing, the title just sensationalizes it.

I went and checked the article page and now this is on there.
Correction 1 April 2015: This page has been amended to clarify that it is the employers, rather than the models, who could be penalised.
this
Models who come in under weight would face fines of up to 75,000 euros, (£55,000) or even prison sentences.
was what was misleading

Ah, brilliant! Alright then, that's much better.
So they want to fine the employer? That's just as dumb. I know skinny models, who are naturally that way. I know women who are big, naturally... Laws that fine people for hosting others for being a particular body style are wrong. Laws should not be used to dictate ones personal choices, as this seems to be. Funny thing about being friends with people in politics, I have a great understanding to how dumb laws like this get made...
employing someone who is anorexic for the purpose of reinforcing a very unhealthy view of women is a bad thing
chances are a lot of these shitheads are telling the women they are fat making their condition worse, at least if a few documentaries aren't lying thats the case
Except, not all of them do that, and that stupid law would still fine them. In same cases that is true, in other cases, it's competition that causes some girls to start purging, etc. Is it sad? Yes. Should it be stopped? Yes. Should a dumb law be passed to stop it? No. Let the market decide. Face it, not every anorexic model is used to reinforce an unhealthy view on women... if that were the case, I second Mrheadhoppers comment. We should fine obese model employers, because obesity whether anyone likes it or not is unhealthy, and pushes and unhealthy view on women. So again, stupid law is stupid.

They're not fining them for hiring "naturally skinny" people they're fining them for using people who are horribly horribly underweight. Think walking skeletons you'd see at Auchwitz rather than a "naturally skinny" person.
Letting the market decide lol the market is deciding right now and the market is saying stupidly underweight people are good! That's why laws like these are being passed, because the market is deciding the wrong thing.

Go look up some pictures of 90 pound women and tell me it's healthy.
maybe rather than just fining for using 'underweight' people they should fine for using anorexic people without providing them with help or something? i don't really think the govt. should be able to regulate peoples bodies
Go look up some pictures of 90 pound women and tell me it's healthy.
Go look at a picture of a 400 pound woman and tell me it's healthy. Also, my ex was 4'11 and weighed 90, and she was healthy... So yea...

some people have this idea that it's shallow & mean to criticize overweight people but that skinny people are fair game

Your hatred for fat women is irrelevant. This is about a law that stops companies from having women starve and self-harm until they're grossly underweight, and you're arguing against it why?

and if someone is underweight without starving themselves? i'm pretty damn underweight and i have an incredibly hard time putting on weight, if i was a model i'd hate to lose my livelihood because of a law like this (because no employer will keep an employee that gets them fines)

I'm arguing that the law will do more harm than good, also I don't hate bigger women... You failed to see my point, which I expected of you.

i don't think we should use BMI to determine if people keep jobs or not
i don't think we should use BMI to determine if people keep jobs or not
whats this about a job
i'm just trying to prove this guy wrong, I don't agree with fines or a prison sentence but 4'11 and 70 is not healthy for a limb
whats this about a job

4'11 and 90, and its .3 off. She eats a lot, doesn't gain weight. She doesn't have any health problems stemming from it either.

She has a clean bill of health from the doctor...

bmi is a stupid measurement of health anyway
ok and
ok and she's skinny but still healthy yet under this law she'd be treated like an anorexic and would lose her job if she was a model because her boss would get fined if they used her
Here is a good article on how BMI is flawed. http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/265215.php
i'd be fine with this law if it targetted employers that pressured their models into anorexia and all that
She has a clean bill of health from the doctor...
i probably should've said "that's barely health" but wait aren't we originally talking about adult models who are like 5'6 and weigh 90 pounds and not some underexaggerated case who's a few points off of healthy?
it's an eating disorder, and that's not healthy. but i guess the argument here is "should having a disorder be illegal" (spolier alert no)

i don't mean to go full feminist here but modeling is really fucking up the idea of beauty

Yea, had my ex been 5'6" I would've agreed with her being unhealthy, lol. She was an adult, just really short, worth a few awkward looks in public. Ok, to state clearly my thoughts on this. If you employer forces you to lose weight, even if you are healthy, and potentially give you an eating disorder, then they should be fined. This country's beauty standards are fucked up. My issue however isn't fully with skinny models, it's the fact they photoshop pictures to make the women look better. When your standard of beauty is so fucked up you literally have to enhance them using a photo editing software, it's pretty fucked up. If this law was rewritten to saw something like I said, I would support it.
It's sorta like punishing drug users instead of the drug suppliers
It's sorta like punishing drug users instead of the drug suppliers
If people can't hire someone because they'd be punished if they did, aren't you still punishing the person looking for work? Moreover, if you're trying to help someone who has an eating disorder because they don't eat enough food, how is taking away both their job and their only means of employment going to help? They can't afford food to feed themselves.
Make the thin ones eat the fat ones.
[editline]2nd April 2015[/editline]
My BMI considers me overweight... People tell me I need to eat more.
