Cortana, the personal digital assistant that replaced Windows 10’s search function and taps into Bing’s servers to answer your queries with contextual awareness, no longer has an off switch. (....) Microsoft even says as much: "With the Windows 10 Anniversary Update, the search box is now Cortana," Microsoft said in a statement. "Customers can expect the same great search experience powered by Bing and Microsoft Edge with the added benefit of Cortana’s personality."
people will defend this
I wouldn't mind Cortana so much if it could utilize Google instead of Bing.
I wouldn't mind Cortana so much if it could utilize Google instead of Bing.
Only thing Bing is good for is porn. I'd imagine someone will figure out a way to turn it off.
I wouldn't mind Cortana so much if it could utilize Google instead of Bing.
So, what's the problem with Bing? Honest question. I've been using it more lately and don't see much of a problem. Rewards are pretty nifty. Also, porn.
I like at how at the end of the article they plug a third party search tool. I trust MS more than I trust a third party free software to read "only the file names" of my entire computer
Why are they forcing people to use Cortana in the first place?
BONZI BUDDY IS HERE TO STAY
There's always the registry, cause I really don't need some half assed voice command bullshit anywhere. They barely works on my Nexus and work iPhone and all 3 collect way too much data to be sold to anyone with a big enough check
as long as my computer won't go rampant, we're good.
So, what's the problem with Bing? Honest question. I've been using it more lately and don't see much of a problem. Rewards are pretty nifty. Also, porn.
I've just usually gotten better results out of Google. Still it's not as bad as Yahoo at least.
So, what's the problem with Bing? Honest question. I've been using it more lately and don't see much of a problem. Rewards are pretty nifty. "We spent time and money developing this thing and by god, you bastards are gonna USE it whether you like it or not!"
There's Windows 10 online search?
Why are they forcing people to use Cortana in the first place?
Well they aren't to be honest. As far as I know you can't "turn off" Cortana in the current public build of W10 either. You can hide the app from the taskbar entirely and just not use it however. There's nothing in the OS to "force" you to use Cortana, it's just a utility that's there. The background service for it is incredibly lightweight when it's not in active use or performance a task that you asked it to do (like indexing something for a search). I tried it like, twice maybe, realised I don't really have a use for it (unidirectional mic, can't exactly shout across my room at my PC and expect Cortana to pause my music consistently). So I just don't use it.

So, have they finally updated Cortana to be a half nude hologram woman that walks around your desktop ?
Isn't Cortana only on the Start > Search? Rather than searching through explorer? Cos I never use the search bar on the start menu.
Considering Cortana is aimed to be their core search system, it does make more sense that it's better integrated. The current start menu search is basically Cortana-lite, it can only learn simple things like what programs you open somewhat regularly. Cortana could optionally include a few things you've taught it that you're interested in when searching.
Does this mean it always be listening?
I really dont get it. Windows 10 is such a good OS, why do keep trying to push these controversial things [editline]27th July 2016[/editline]
Does this mean it always be listening?
No, that part can be disabled still (i think it is by default actually) and even then, its only listening for 'hey cortana', which then activates its features. It can use the mic the same time as other programs
Only thing Bing is good for is porn. I'd imagine someone will figure out a way to turn it off.
but asking cortana to find you porn makes the experience that much better
You can also just not log in to windows 10 with a microsoft account
This will actively disable loads of things people like to complain about. Though you do lose the neat stuff like your personalisation settings just syncing across any devices that haven't implemented a management policy blocking that.
So, what's the problem with Bing?
Terrible search results. Tried searching for "Z80" and it threw me all the wikipedia articles that are NOT in english Searching "Zilog Z80" gave me a mobile english wikipedia site It's just one more click to change the language, but it shows that their algorithm is bad
Meh, I've already fucked with the registry keys to turn shit off, I'll do it again.
fuck that
There has to be one guy making these decisions whose ignoring a lot of criticism.

Good thing I can't even turn Cortana on Unless It's because I'm not using a MS account
There has to be one guy making these decisions whose ignoring a lot of criticism.
It's like how the microsoft surface was designed to be the perfect product... for microsoft executives.
